It was close wasn’t it!
In fairness I’m pretty sure that I only uttered one consonant. I meant to say track of course but was probably thinking of the Irish term ‘craic’ to describe the great time being had by all.
In fairness to Lingfield I was down there the other day for the first time in yonks and they’ve done a great job. It is actually a pretty pleasant place to be these days.

I take it you’re referring to the entire dismantling of the old PR cum Marketing team at Ladbrokes Mr Boyce. I’m told that Warren (Lush by name etc) is having a leaving do in Soho Friday night. I can’t imagine that you’re not on the guest list, but do you have a pass out?

Now I have a HDD recorder with ‘Time-slip’, those memorable moments can be scrutinised upon very closely
When I heard it, the coffee I was then supping on was promptly deposited all over my monitor screen. I was playing on BF and listening at the same time you see. Luckily I had some screen wipes to hand.
Good to see Sean back in action.

On a completely different tack, Sean, are you booked in to do the strictly coming dancing gig on the bbc next month?. If you are, please post your thoughts on the field. I’ve found this a very profitable market during the past two series. For those who scoff, I would recommend you follow Sean’s thoughts. He was spot on last time.

    Hello Cheltboy,

I too get plenty of scoffing about playing markets like SCD and BB from some of my colleagues but funnily enough the money I’ve won on these things has been as acceptable to retailers as the money won on horses!

Nothing sorted as yet for new series but I will of course keep you posted on here if I get the call up and am able to establish some early value. (unlikely that we’ll get another Halfpenny type coup but you never know).
I’m sorry I missed this – it would almost have been worth watching all the replays to catch it. Some might say it raises some reasonable doubt about my theory that ATR is put out by 12 foot tall blood drinking lizards, but I’d still say the evidence for the prosecution remains overwhelming.

Maybe Sean should continue the Irish Pub Craic theme by reffering to Skybet/Hillbillies PR men’s musicianship on such occasions. Fiddlers I think is the correct way to address them.

No danger of me being on the list Matron! I don’t even rate as z list celebrity I hope. I was used to do some betting slots for them on the first two shows which did involve a bit of research of course which did in turn point me the way of the 16-1 runner up in the first year and the 7-1 winner last time. :-)

I was traveling through some pages and come across this one. I then remembered Boyce and Big Mac having a go over each other with regards to Hatton Flight. To cut a short story even shorter, Hatton Flight came a couple of yards out of the stall and that was as far as it got. Big Mac said that punters should’ve been refunded as there could at least be a ruling that sees punters get a refund if the horse dosen’t get 50 yards out of the stall. Boyce had a right old dig at him and said this was complete and utter tosh.

Who in your opinions was right, considering a 50 yard refund rule would probably effect people whos horse ended up winning i’d imagine.

I must admit i feel short changed if i back a horse with no previous and end up not getting to watch it run.

As far as I see it, as soon as the race has started, you rely totally on the abilities of the jockey and the horse to do their best and bring home the bacon, and if for any reason they’re not up to the job, then that’s just hard cheese.

I have yet to see a remotely good reason why the start of a race should be considered not part of it.
McCririck is like a broken record about it and should be told to shut up about it by producers.
"It is called horseracing" he says "and that horse didn’t race" he adds.
The start of the race is part of the race you plonker McCririck.

With flat racing it is very simple – and the rules are fine as they are. If a horse is in the stalls when the gates open it is a runner. It it doesn’t bother coming out of the stalls then tough.

A bit more difficult with jump racing but two possible suggestions.

One is markers 10 yards behind the tape. If a horse is withing the 10yard zone when the tapes go up it is deemed to be a runner – even if it plants itself.

    or

As long as any part of the horse crosses the starting line then it is a runner.

    Hmmm,

The vast majority of horses who do not start have shown some temperament before (even the ones that have never refused before). Temperament is included in the price you take, there is always the possibility of it doing something wrong to ruin it’s chance. Whether that is as the tapes go up, halfway through or in a finish.
Punters who study form identify temperamental horses and either believe the price is big enough (value) to take a chance, or do not back it.
Big Mac portrays this issue as the money going in to the bookies pockets. It does not. A rule 4 reduction would come directly from winning punters. If winning punters identified the “non-starter” as a poor bet; why should they be penalised? Of course I have sympathy with punters losing their money in any way, especially in the Magnier case. But again, the poor jockey is factored in to the price too.

With Hatton Flight, the race starts as soon as the gate opens; it is just unfortunate. There can not be another line after 10 metres. What would happen if it unseated after 10.01 metres? We’d get the same old arguments, and how would stewards be able to measure that extra centimetre? The same thing applies to a line 10 metres behind the line of a jump race. Far easier to have the start as the tapes go up.

Stepping over the start line could be a starter (pardon the pun), trouble is if the horse is a little reluctant and the money is on; the jockey may deliberately not start. Rather than be out the back. It is just a matter of jockeyship and temperament.

I do not see that there should be any change. It may not be absolutely fair, but it is the fairest way.

    Value Is Everything
