Sea the Stars will stand at Gilltown Stud in IrelandIn a press release published this morning, the Tsui family ended weeks of speculation by announcing that Sea The Stars would stand at the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Co. Kildare, Ireland.
Ling Tsui, mother of Christopher Tsui in whose colours the 3yo colt raced, said “His Highness was kind enough to let us stand Sea The Stars at Gilltown while keeping ownership of him and we are most grateful. The staff and facilities at Gilltown are top class and Sea The Stars will enjoy his stay there.”His Highness the Aga Khan said: “Mrs Tsui and Christopher’s decision to entrust the future career at stud of Sea The Stars to Gilltown Stud farm brings to everyone at the Aga Khan Studs, as well as to me personally, the greatest happiness. Mrs Tsui and Christopher’s decision is certainly one of the most important developments for my operation since I inherited it in 1960. (…).This horse could also help develop relations to bring Chinese investment into the European bloodstock market."
One of the very first mares to visit Sea the Stars has already been named as the Aga Khan plans to send him his unbeaten 2008 Arc winner Zarkava, now in foal to Dalakhani. "I believe the last two Arc winners were made for each other both in terms of ability, temperament and conformation. The best needs to be bred to the best.”

Gutted he’s not off to Sheikh Mo after they sorted him out with a webpage and all
October 27, 2009 at 10:38 #255620Imagine that. A sprog out of Sea the Stars and Zarkava. That could be a horse enthusiasts dream. C’est superb !

nice choice, and presumably not the worst of news for John Oxx
October 27, 2009 at 11:29 #255624Right, I’m going to spend the next couple of years thinking of names for my baby’s foal. Equus Major maybe (Ursa Major is a constellation of stars, but Ursa means bear and Equus means horse, and Major also reflects the dominance of the 2 horses).

Perfect breeding…for a Champion Hurdler.
October 27, 2009 at 17:17 #255675Poor little foal; talk about the weight of expectation.
October 27, 2009 at 17:33 #255677It’s a shame he’s retiring. God help you if your a talented 3yo or in his case super talented 3yo that hasn’t been gelded. That’s a one way ticket to the shed at the end of the year. Then he enters a whole other race once he arrives there. I know he won’t have this problem but I’ve seen it several times here in the US where a horse goes to the shed, hasn’t even had his first foals hit the ground only to be sold to stand somewhere else. In our case it’s usually overseas somewhere. Granted the horses are not of STS caliber but dang that’s frustrating. We have One Great Cat in Pennsylvania who is to be sold as a stallion prospect this winter. They expect to get around $50,000 for him. When he retired last year he was light and not filled out but when we went to photograph him for the sale he was gorgeous! All dappled out and amazingly well proportioned. STS won’t have any problem getting mares and while I wait patiently for the Zarkava foal, I have to say that little one has really big shoes to fill. Regardless it will be born with a huge fan base.
October 27, 2009 at 17:52 #255684^^What are you guys worrying about?
Nicky Henderson will take good care of it,,.
October 27, 2009 at 18:07 #255689I know there’s no guarantees in the world of breeding, but if the son or daughter of the STS – Zarkava union produces anything less than a multiple group one winning animal, I’ll stop dreaming.
As far as a name goes, I can see them doing the same thing they did with Ouija Boards first foal by Kingmambo (Voodoo Prince) – a play on both names rather than something more obvious.
Would a ‘private’ fee of 450,000 euros be too much to ask for STS’s services?
October 27, 2009 at 18:18 #255692$450,000 euros for an unproven sire? Wow I would say that’s a bit much. Granted he’s a superstar but still he’s unproven. IMO he would have to start less than that. Way less.

Sea the Stars x Ghanaati – that would be amazing, shame we’ll never see it happen.

Would a ‘private’ fee of 450,000 euros be too much to ask for STS’s services? It has to be longish odds against this mating producing a Group 1 winner, genetics doesn’t really work like that (unfortunately!).
Yes, 450,000 Euros would be too much to ask, probably by a factor of at least 5.
Clearly, STS will be given every chance to succeed at stud, but, and leaving aside those with fertility problems, there have been plenty of outstanding champions who’ve proved serious failures as stallions, for example, Citation, Tulloch, Brigadier Gerard and Spectacular Bid.
