What i find slightly bemusing is that there is seemingly no suggestion (or at least very little) that Ruby would ride Denman. Unless I’ve missed something I presume he’s nailed his colours to Kauto Star which given Denman’s win last season is slightly surprising, I’d have been expecting a "who will Ruby ride" saga.
February 5, 2009 at 01:04 #208199I see ED going to the Ryanair which would potentially leave AP without a ride in the Gold Cup.

are you dangling a carrot and waiting for me to bite?February 5, 2009 at 01:50 #208212A.P IS NOW 2/5 TO RIDE DENMAN
quite incredible, just goes to show that some folk are making hay with
a bit of privledged information! this certainly isn"t a public gamble!February 5, 2009 at 02:17 #208216I see ED going to the Ryanair which would potentially leave AP without a ride in the Gold Cup.

Who"s gonna ride Albertas Run then ?February 5, 2009 at 05:14 #208250Hello,
Conversely you cannot lambast Nicholls, Findlay etc. for wanting the best they can afford, wouldn’t anybody??
You cannot employ anyone to do a task simply because he is a nice guy..I type as a master of mediocrity, I am neither ashamed or proud, I just am..but I do admire people who excell at their trade, and of course I am also pleased about people who have had, shall we say, a bit of luck, or being in the right place at the right time to lift themselves from Planet Average…

I think you miss the point of most of the comments. There have been none that I have seen lambasting the owners for wanting the best jockey. They should choose who THEY want.
The comments that the trainer has made in public have been the main issue, and how you get the best from people you employ. Such comments have probably contributed to how Sam Thomas has ridden in the subsequent headline races and made the problem worse not better. When did you last hear Alex Ferguson criticise Ronaldo or Rooney for any individual failings – and there have been some this season?
Finally, associating mediocrity with a jockey that has won a Hennesey and a Gold Cup with little fuss is nonsense. It is one thing to be in the right place at the right time – it is another not to blow the opportunity, and its not as if there was no pressure.

I hear Sam Thomas is free!
February 5, 2009 at 14:27 #208277He looks as though he could do well at Taunton today. Rode a couple of winners there same meeting last year. Could he do a ‘Frankie’ and go through the card? Sell your houses and all your possessions and lump on.
February 5, 2009 at 21:11 #208339Well, not a ‘Frankie’ but the boy’s done well so far today.
February 7, 2009 at 00:49 #208568Bucket loads of cash for A.P to ride Denman in the Gold cup, he"s now 2/5 to do so with Ruby now out to 6/1 and yet tomorrow A.P rides this years Gold Cup winner Albertas Run and Ruby rides Denman.Should
Albertas beat Denman tomorrow will he be the new favourite for the Gold Cup? and those who have backed A.P to ride Denman will be sweating!
Me being a firm believer in Loyalty has invested in Sam thomas keeping the Gold Cup ride at 2/1, but what price Loyalty in Horse racing these days!!February 7, 2009 at 01:41 #208581Paul Barber said that Sam Thomas could yet ride Denman in the Gold Cup.

Himself,
As it should be, with Ruby on Kauto,A.P on Albertas, if Sam still doesn"t
get the ride on Denman then there is no chance he will be riding for the stable after that lack of support! 6 months ago if you were to price the "who
will ride Denman in the Gold Cup" Sam would be 1/3fav, the guy has never changed in the slightest in my opinion! if the horse is good enough so is Sam!February 9, 2009 at 21:40 #209255A.P IS NOW 2/5 TO RIDE DENMAN
quite incredible, just goes to show that some folk are making hay with
a bit of privledged information! this certainly isn"t a public gamble!I see Harry Findlay has stated that Sam Thomas will ride Denman in the Gold Cup

But, as one who yelled from the rooftops over Denman’s chances last year, I am a realist, and it would take a giant leap of faith for me to think that he will even partcipate at Cheltenham this year let alone win the Gold Cup. Therefore, Sam Thomas may yet end up being disappointed – though he may ride another in the race.

March 23, 2009 at 20:25 #218053Just thought I’d bring this topic back up to the top with the news from the RP that:
"SAM THOMAS has left his good friend and agent Sam Stronge "shocked" and "very disappointed" after informing him that he is ending their working relationship. Thomas, who has ridden 72 winners so far this season, is returning to former agent Dave Roberts in a bid to "boost" his career."
