Quite sweet on the chances of Deep Purple in this. A rejuvinated horse this year who was very impressive this year before his King George run and I think it’s fair to say we can forgive him for that. He made a blunder half way through the race and wasnt given a hard time after before being pulled up. Massively overpriced imo for one of the classiest horses in the race.

Even the Ante-Post King can be misguided at times! The Ryanaair is tailor-made for this horse!

I’m struggling with that one to be honest, to me Joncol looks anything like a Ryanair horse. Did you come to that assumption based on todays win?
February 7, 2010 at 19:35 #274754He Stays…….he Jumps….he got a small Turn of foot..and will stay up that Hill
May aswell have a go
February 7, 2010 at 19:42 #274757Obviously Joncol would have a better chance in the Ryan Air but he certianly looks more suited to the Gold Cup.
February 7, 2010 at 20:52 #274781I can see Paul waiting for the Guinness Gold Cup at Punchestown with him.
February 8, 2010 at 01:06 #274814Schindlers Hunt will appreciate the drop down in trip and the better ground surely be there or thereabouts?

This horse has a great cruising speed, and was able to quicken when they picked up off the slow pace today. He easily posses enough speed for the Ryanair imo.
February 8, 2010 at 04:49 #274828He didn’t quicken imo. Cooldine needed the run and just got tired.
February 8, 2010 at 13:41 #274877It’s all about opinions

The horse had enough speed to finish 2nd to Tranquil sea over 2 miles giving him 10 lbs.

Just read my own post and it could be interpretted I was being a bit sarcastic. Sorry for that.
I was asking the question because I didnt see the race because to be honest, it didnt really interest me. Bar a show-stopping performance from Cooldine who, if he came back to his form of last season would have an e/w squeak in the GC, I didnt see the outcome of this race having a say in what I’d want to back at Chelts.
However having watched quite a few of Joncols races in the past, he always seemed to me a horse who would revel more at 3miles+ with the mud flying rather than keeping pace with the likes of Voy Por, Barbers Shop, Shindlers Hunt and my own speculative Deep Purple on the likely good ground in the Ryanair.
Anyhow, I don’t mind being proved wrong, usually am as are most of us.
I’m off to watch the race for the 1st time and subsequentely will be holding a stewards enquiry!
February 8, 2010 at 15:48 #274916Result stands!
Joncol got slightly outpaced before the home straight then stayed on to win on the line… Still can’t see how this translates to Ryanair winning form, lovely horse that he is. Watching the race has only strengthened my view that he’ll be outpaced so much by the time the others hit the hill, it won’t matter how well he stays up it.
I think its very likely connections will stay in Ireland and go for the Guiness Gold Cup before targeting next years GC at the festival. (that might be a good bet btw if he keeps progressing as he has done this season).
February 8, 2010 at 17:49 #274949Imo coming into the staraight Cawley asks him to quicken and the response is very good. Look at his race behind Tranquil Sea!

Okay, I kind of see your point about the Tranquil Sea race, he appears speedy enough there, but even that seems a little flawed. Joncol only beat Trafford Lad by half a length giving him 2lbs and finished behind Tranquil Sea albeit conceding 10lbs. I would say this probably isnt the best example of two mile chasing as they are all better suited by longer distances and were all having their first run of the season.
Dont know how Joncol will travel on good ground either, there’s not been any evidence of that as far as I know and dont know what his breeding would suggest. Anyone?
February 8, 2010 at 22:03 #275026Trafford Lad would have boosted the form lines of both Joncol and Tranquil Sea by now,he is a much speedier jumper of a fence than the other 2 and is a Grade 1 winner in the making, further injuries forbidden! Joncol is an absolute beauty to look at but he is not a Ryanair horse, he showed yesterday his future is over further, the softer the ground the better! Voy Por will have too many gears over 21/2m around Cheltenham! If Joncol did nothing from now to winning next years Irish Hennessey again, connections would have no complaints!
February 8, 2010 at 22:07 #275027This race looks tailor made for Barbers Shop. What race is he likely to go for this or the Gold Cup?
February 8, 2010 at 22:09 #275029Joncol won’t even run lads so I don’t think there’s much point debating his chances. Yesterday was his Cheltenham as Paul clearly said beforehand. I think they’ll definitely freshen him up now for a crack at the Guinness Gold Cup.
Tranquil Sea still stands out a mile for me at the current prices in this race.
