Not sure how Shishkin lost that. I was screaming for De Boinville to get him wider for a clear look at the fences. I’m a big fan usually but think that was a shocker from Nico there. He managed to get beat with possibly a stone in hand.
I had Envoi Allen as a cover bet but I was on Shishkin at 8’s.

Time (or the Melling Chase) will tell.

Shishkin ran a very odd race, pushed along from the start, jumping to his left at a lot of fences then back on the bridle at one stage then was being pushed along after a slight mistake at the 4th last before walking through the 3rd last and then staying on after the last…..although it was probably a little bit exaggerated by Hitman palpably not getting up the hill and the winner idling in front.

The winner really travelled (at some points a little too well) throughout the whole race and he also was down on his nose at the 3rd last but came back on the bridle and you knew once Rachael let him go he would stay on up the hill having won over 3m previously.

I would imagine something might come to light with Shishkin but he seems to not be a very straight forward horse to deal with and it will be interesting as to what they do with him next.

ITV interviewed Henderson before the race, and his comments were telling. His ‘tone of voice’ was distinctly ‘doubtful’ to my ears.

I thought it was going to be like last year for a moment. I just wonder if De Boinville was surprised when the starter let them go and found himself on the back foot. But you cannot win any race if you put in jumps like the one at the third last.

Only just catching up with the action, good race enjoyed it. He’s some horse to make a mistake like he did and then still have the legs to get himself up the hill the way he did.

Fair play to HDB, great to see Envoi Allen get an open G1 (not novice) at Cheltenham. Gut feeling is the mistake did for Shishkin but Envoi wasn’t stopping to be fair either.

Hitman is mister consistency. Probably infuriating and a joy to own in equal measure, expensive to follow if you aren’t on EW

Shiskin never looked happy , he ran a monster considering , nice pickup on Envoi but even happier it gives the KG form a big push and Fury running a stinker asks a question of the Irish GC form , APT will be the mover now with HBD horses going so well

I think Fury wants 3 miles and nice ground.

Even in his pomp he would sometimes twist his back end over fences at times. I wonder if that has caused some wear and tear over time, and Alice Plunkett said his topline didn’t look as well muscled as she expected…back problems? He’s some horse to get up for second after the mistake, but perhaps his body has had nearly enough.

Got pulled from the BANC last year and the John Durkan this year on account of the ground.

Won on it plenty of times to , it maybe he doesn’t like Cheltenham , Envoi has won the bumper , Ballymore and now a Ryanair , not bad for a horse that some think has underachieved …… achieved more than Shiskin
