Why do the jockeys not promote themselves in a similar manner to footballers, etc? Why are they so closely shackled to the owners/trainers?
Seems a shame to me as we have got some delightful characters who would interest the public and promote racing in a positive way.

Jockeys do not get paid 100k a week or have agents or have the lure of massive transfer fees. Neither is there the same media circus which surrounds football.

I believe there is a duty of care to racings customers but not an obligation. After all what Ryan says in a TV interview will not be heard by the paying public at the races only the public watching on tv who are primarily funding the bookies and nobody else.

What a shame that "keep it zipped" should be the watchword in racing. Does that include after the race?
It’s also disconcerting that racing is thought of as a "serious money-grubbing business". I know millions are spent on yearlings which I find astonishing, only to be looked after by some staff on low wages and jockeys riding them for not a great deal of money either. There is an imbalance.
I must be in the minority as I would like to see staff and jockeys get a fairer remuneration. After all, besides the horses, they, along with the trainer, are delivering the glorious spectacle of racing. But then I look upon racing as a sport whilst others consider it a betting and/or leisure activity.
Regarding interviews of jockeys, Goodwood conduct them for the racing public in attendance and not just at the ‘Glorious’ meetings.

Like most professional sportsfolk owners/trainers/jockeys are adept at stringing a chain of cliche-ridden sentences together that are rarely more worthwhile than sweet f a so it’s refreshing to have one in Moore who conserves the hot air

We followers of racing are fortunate that the single most important contributor to the game – the horse – is the big strong silent type

If I were sponsoring a race with any sort of profile I’d make it a condition of entry (with a prize money with-hold clause in the event of non-participation) that the connections of the first three who were professionally involved (i.e. trainer/jockey) make themselves available on request for media questions after the event.

He really shouldn’t bother at all. It’s excruciating for everyone. He lacks manners.

I just read the article in the Guardian pointed out by Campallino Rampante and could not help recalling the comments made by Willie Carson one day while talking about the Derby. Something to the effect that most horses never recover from running in the Derby. It seems that the course screws with the minds of most horses. Many of O’Brien’s are not asked to race on if the course does not agree with them. Such as Frozen Fire who was not asked to compete further in the Derby when Kinane found that he was not enjoying it.

I think that Ryan Moore was advised to give his side of the story and there was no one better to conduct an interview with him than Brighton based (and a member of this site) Greg Wood.

Greg has known the Moore family since Ryan’s grandfather Charlie was combining the jobs of training some very moderate horses and dealing with even more moderate second hand cars.

Go back through the last week and see how many horses Ryan rode and at many different tracks and it must be easy to see that anyone under the workload Ryan faces day after day, he could have been forgiven for forgetting his pass on one occasion.

I would have thought it obvious to any security staff that someone carrying two bags that must have been virtually identical to the other bags other jockeys carry and maybe just maybe looking slim and not too tall that here was not someone attempting to gain entry for free but a jockey with his mind on not much else than trying to win Group 1 races.

Whilst Ryan may come across as reticent his father Gary does not give much away or indeed suffer fools gladly.

In his interview with Greg Wood Ryan Moore stated that he just wants to win every race, not just for himself but for the connections and also those punters who back his rides.

Just a few hours later and another two good priced winners!

Compare that to the recent arrogant statement by jockey Richard Hughes where he said he rides just for connections and punters who back his horses do not concern him.

Richard Hughes did not get offered the Sir Michael Stoute job as stable jockey as he has never been as good as Ryan Moore and will never ever be.

To the person who questioned was Ryan Moore gay. No he is not he lives with his girlfriend.

not wishing to divert this thread but i think it was davy condon that was interviewed by gordon brown yesterday on atr and i thought he came across as a very articulate and interesting jockey to listen to and as was said earlier in this thread, i think, about trainers and jockeys tiredly churning out the standard cliches when asked questions, i found myself surprised at some of his answers as i was expecting the usual soundbites but his answers came out more like a proper conversation

it’s good when that happens and it shows i guess that everyone is different and talent and charisma or articulacy (i just made that word up) aren’t linked

when you see what rooney et al get away with on the soccer pitch each week and get away with i’m staggered this thread has developed so far considering he has been fined and contriteness shown – maybe that shows how rare it thankfully is in racing ?

" We followers of racing are fortunate that the single most important contributor to the game – the horse – is the big strong silent type

    Eyes open ears closed".

    Absolutely correct, imo,

but, I suppose, that Mr Ed will write in to say that this is all bollocks; someone else will write to say he hopes Mr Ed breaks a leg; someone else will write to say it’s all the fault of the dastardly Irish and another will hint that Mr Ed is gay anyway, while finally,
James Sharwood and J McCririck will sneeringly discuss the jockeys’ outfits , accessories, and speech impediments, while Cliff and Elton sing cheering, rousing, songs in the background.

Has England really been reduced to this starstruck level by the powerful vinyl couch-potato spin industry? Chatshow jive seems to have taken command of the merry-go-round, turning the ringmaster into a jibbering clown.
