He comes across as surly, uncooperative and unpleasant, an appalling advertisement for the sport.

It would be better if the obnoxious little scrote broke his arm every year.

Perhaps not surly and uncooperative, but that post is definitely unpleasant…

The guy is paid to ride winners. Give me Ryan Moore over the legions of mediocre non-trying simpletons that make up the majority of the weighing room….

"" It would be better if the obnoxious little scrote broke his arm every year.""

Very poor comment, imo, but fairly typical of a hard-core of posters on this forum, I suppose.

I’m no fan of Ryan Moore’s attitude, however I would not wish him (or indeed any rider) any harm or, especially, an injury that would prevent him from working.

The greatest jockey of all time was hardly a conversationalist was he…

I’m surprised at that comment to be honest. Bit out of line.

An unpleasant comment followed by an unfair generalisation.

    Cracking thread.

he was only rude for heavens sake and he got fined for it – big deal, end of.

wonder how short tempered we’d all be if we were having to perform competitively at his level as well as keep our weight ridiculously down and being criticised professionally and otherwise every day.

nobody’s saying being rude is acceptable but most of us are at one time or another and most of us won’t get fined a bag of sand when we do.

amazing how this thread’s developed though

As stated on the associated ‘bollocks’ thread, there is more to the ‘job’ than riding horses well. In general terms expectations of the media, followers of the sport and those involved in the sport itself are much higher than they were in, say, LP’s heyday – like it or not. Any sensible person, who finds themself in a high-profile position, will realise this and be aware of the potential damage that they can cause to themselves and the sport by not dancing to the tune, in public at least.

Personally, I don’t expect ‘professionals’ to behave like a village idiot just for the sake of the cameras but draw the line when someone seems unable to display common courtesy.

Is it beyond a parent or elder statesman to have a word in young Victor’s ear before the inevitable fall from grace happens?

Call me unsympathetic if you like but nobody is making him do the job and with his family background he should know more than most what he was taking on. If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

Also he is not unique in facing those problems and, correct me if I am wrong, I don’t see too many other jockeys behaving in the same manner.

nobody’s saying being rude is acceptable but most of us are at one time or another and most of us won’t get fined a bag of sand when we do.

I would suggest that at most places of work, which it must be remembered is where he was, abusing a fellow worker would be construed as "gross misconduct" and would quite likely result in dismissal. So, arguably, he could be said to have got off lightly.

As for the fine that is nothing more than a slap on the wrist for him.

We all come under pressure at times, whatever our line of work may be. The majority, however, do not lash out like a spoilt child when things do not go our own way.

There is no doubting Ryan Moore is a very able and technically competent jockey. He is also an intelligent 24 year old, not some semi-literate teenage footballer – he should know better.

it would not be the same if everyone was perfect would it ryan moore will get older and wiser as long as he does not go the way of another top class jockey his attittude will not make the slightest difference to the face of racing i have a lot of sympathy for victor meldrew the world has gone mad with rules and regulations and lets face it nobody died, and he said sorry, bet he was not laughing about it though.

it makes you think that Moore’s reticence/shyness is something that will count against him in the long run, if the Mail is prepared to print a letter like that, about a jockey who non-racing people have never heard of, it makes you wonder if the knives are out in certain sections of the press.

It wasn’t that Jones woman again, was it?

And I believe that no jockey should speak to the Press or media until retired, and that all microphone-wielders, bar the commentators, should be banned from the racecourse.

"…………And I believe that no jockey should speak to the Press or media until retired,…………"

……….and I believe that would be too soon.

I agree with the rest of your post though, Sean!

I was at Chester for the May meeting last year and you couldn’t see the grass in the paddock for television crews. :D
