Well first Royal meeting covered , after a bright start and extremely high hopes , I thought it tapered off somewhat
Oli Bell and Willoughby spoiled it for me . both OTT ….
Hislop and Mellish as always brilliant
Morrison , a breath of fresh air , darn good , well done sir
The rest were just Ok
Commentator was ok , but still miles behind Holt
Good coverage of the horses , entertaining to a point , but can do better overall I would give 6/10
any views ??
imo

June 21, 2014 at 19:14 #483573As I posted in another topic:
Racing UK’s coverage of Royal Ascot this week has been absolutely outstanding right from Mark Your Card to a Racing Replay programme hosted by Angus McNae that has been a very pleasant surprise.
Ruby Walsh has been a superb addition to the ranks this week, a completely different class to the likes of Fitgerald on C4.
I doubt anyone from RUK reads these forums but if any do read this post I’d like to say thank you so much for a thoroughly enjoyable week and a truly excellent product.
I don’t mind paying a subscription when I get quality like they’ve provided this week.
June 21, 2014 at 19:32 #483575Mike , I love it when you go all serious >>
June 21, 2014 at 20:11 #483578Would have been even better if they didn’t have show the gaff racing from away meetings.
What this week has shown is that lydia hyslop is worth ten Clare baldings and long may she shine.June 21, 2014 at 20:16 #483580Would have been even better if they didn’t have show the gaff racing from away meetings.
What this week has shown is that lydia hyslop is worth ten Clare baldings and long may she shine.Showing the lesser meetings is something they can’t do much about unless they go behind the red button or have two RUK channels.
Lydia is far better than Clare Balding, I agree.
June 21, 2014 at 20:24 #483585I’ve really enjoyed the RUK coverage this week, it’s been a refreshing change from the OTT of the Cartoon channel
June 21, 2014 at 21:57 #483609I had other stuff to watch like the cycling on Eurosport and the cricket so basically I was just switching to RUK a minute or two before the ‘off’ times
I’ve really gone off the hours of build up that they do for Cheltenham so i didn’t watch that either
Must say I’m also bored with post race interviews with jockeys and trainers who say ‘he’s a nice type’ and ‘no, we’ll get home and talk to the owner before deciding where to go next’
So I tend to flick back to something else as soon as they cross the winning line
But when there’s nothing else on and I just leave the telly on RUK it’s pretty good……..in the background
Lydia and Steve are the stars of the show
I quite like Angus and Willo as a team when they let them loose on a racetrack…….they seem to be so happy to be out of the studio !

What this week has shown is that lydia hyslop is worth ten Clare baldings and long may she shine. That comment totally disregards that they are asked to do rather different jobs. Hyslop adds value with her comments about the horses and running of a race but that is a role Balding is not asked to do. Balding is an excellent interviewer.
June 22, 2014 at 08:25 #483633Just copied day one thoughts from Ricky’s previous thread:-
I think you are easily pleased.
There were plenty of faults. I wouldn’t have been rushing to give it 3/10.
Profits are supposed to go back into racing. After they paid everyone who turned up for yesterday’s gig I suspect there were not many left. Complete overkill.
Like it or not Royal Ascot is linked to fashion although that point seems to have been lost on RUK’s finest. I have never seen so many ill-fitting hats but I suppose it did add some much needed non-contrived comedic value.
I couldn’t help thinking how long racing would last on terrestrial television if the triumvirate of Willoughby, his stooge and Walsh (why?) ever turned up.
Arrogant comment of the year? Lydia’s ‘we don’t compare Frankel and Kingman, we are RUK’. Of course two seconds later they did.
It was good to see the underused Morrison but the shots of the horses exiting to go down were abysmal and negated any point to what might have been a useful exercise.
Pretty poor that Lydia’s lapdog thought Fran Berry might have been Richard Hughes.
Plenty of scope for improvement.
If anything things didn’t improve so 2/10. Just picked myself off the floor having noticed that Ricky has agreed regarding Willoughby. Endlessly droning about sectionals. You almost think he believes there is a row of desks and a blackboard. Fortunately, Walsh escaped after a couple of days. No doubt he is currently undergoing a sanity check. The most enjoyable part of the coverage was the band striking up as the bore was in full flow. If I had been there I might have been inclined to have slipped the bandleader a few extra quid just to play something louder.
June 22, 2014 at 10:20 #483646The key to any horse racing coverage for me is seeing the horses in the paddock and going to post, this they failed to do enough, even when they just had the one meeting to cover.
On Gold Cup day why didn’t they show every horse for every race in the paddock and going to post? I don’t want to see people talking all the time and in depth interviews with connections of the winners of the previous race only 5 minutes before the off of the next.
June 22, 2014 at 21:42 #483724..not a patch on ATR for covering the Royal meeting…. Matt Chapman was brilliant in the booth for this… plus Cattermole/Weaver/McCririck etc… at the course…
much missed…
June 24, 2014 at 12:04 #483825Shame RUK can’t hide the other meetings behind the red button or give them away to ATR.
Over all thought RUK should be very pleased with their coverage. Morsisson made "what I call" an informative, no nonsense job. Alhough needs better camera work/angles to post. I am one of the few who enjoy Willow’s wanderings. Do wish he’d shut up though, don’t want too many punters understnding importance of sectionals. Mellish master analysis and all kept together by Her Highness Hislop.
8/10
Value Is EverythingSeptember 8, 2014 at 06:08 #489937Only 1 meeting to cover on Sunday, a quality one at York with 2 or 3 races thrown in from abroad but absolutely no effort made to show the horses in the paddock or going to post at York despite the presenters being stood in the paddock.

I don’t think anyone should ever be surprised about RUK providing the bare minimum.
Was Mark Howard the pundit? Can’t remember too many paddock shots when he is on – mobility issues?
September 8, 2014 at 16:42 #489955I’ve previously seen Mark Howard walking with crutches so he does have some mobility issues
To be fair Racing UK were showing racing from France and Turkey as well as York so they didn’t have a lot of time to show horses in the paddock. On a similar note I’m amazed no-one criticizes ATR for not doing the same thing. Then again yesterday it was Mick Fitz at Fontwell and I turned over every time he was talking.

With Ruk , each time Hislop and Mellish are on we get to see the horses , plus quality Punditry….outside of those 2 , its pretty mundane …not quite as good as it used to be , certainly not worth the 22 quid sub
Both Channels are sponsored by bookies , both have the same agenda
personal choice I would say ,,,but I can see the reasons why folks dont cough up each month….for me it was Willoughby and co , plus the bland coverage by SIS employees masquerading as broadcasters …
just my opinion though , if others find it value at 22 quid , then fair play to them
