As there seems to be no mention of the race in the RP, forum members might be interested in the result of the €150,000 Prix Duc D’Anjou, a G3 3500m chase for 4-y-os, and a race carrying more added money than the Triumph Hurdle, which was won in good style today by the 2-1 favourite Rubi Ball (C. Pieux), a son of the Monsun horse, Network.

Baraka du Berlais and Futio were 2nd and 3rd. In very testing conditions, the winner clocked a distinctly unspritely 4’41″00 for the 3500m.

I wonder how many of the 18-strong field will be being trained in the UK this time next year?!

Meanwhile, down in Cagnes-Sur-Mer, the G1 1609m/1 mile €200,000 Criterium De Vitesse was won by the odds-on, and these days seemingly unstoppable Meaulnes Du Corta (P. Levesque) from the Italian horse Igor Font and Offshore Dream in 1’54″61. His career earnings must be well over €3.3m now.

I’d take Baraka Du Berlais (also 5th in the Cambraceres) as being in Nicholls yard at this time next year Ven. There’ll be plenty in behind too – Miserable is from the small yard of Marie-Laetitia Mortier and a G2 winner last November whilst a horse who fell today (Regisseur) started favourite for that G2 and was pulled up. Sir Dal has decent form and would still be a novice over hurdles.

They’ll have this year left in them and then anything looking like it won’t stay 3m+ will be up for sale – there’s no 2m-2m4f program for older horses in France over fences (sadly) if there were I doubt Master Minded would be where he is now

Surprised you didn’t mention Cyrlight’s 10 length beating of last seasons top 4yo over hurdles in the final event at Auteuil

Fantastic to see him back, and a nice write up in the RP on the days events:

Agree entirely, and this is a point that the current

    Timeform Chasers & Hurdlers

essay on the gelding is keen to hammer home. My understanding is that the sale of Master Minded out of France was done with no small degree of reluctance.

There’s literally no races for him – it’s pretty much a case of base in France and target UK races or watch him not stay 3m every few weeks.

I’m not sure Remember Rose is a better racehorse than him but he’s a better stayer and unless they wanted to send MM hurdling (even the Champion is run at 3m 3f or so) then they had no choice. He won back half his purchase price on his debut for Smith in the 4yo Championship a couple of years back so from that you’d estimate it cost around 150k to buy him. Proven performer and far better value than some deals.

Good to see Adam Kondrat still riding too :)

There are some Listed chases at Auteuil – we ran Flipper in one over 3500m (2m 1 1/2f) last year, and I seem to remember a Group 3 over 4100m (2m 4 1/2 f), but when I looked for chases for Flipper this season a few months back, I couldn’t believe how few opportunites there were. I really was unaware to be honest – I think I found a chase at Enghien over 3500m for 5 year olds plus worth 90,000 Euros, but it was a handicap.

Sounds about right tbh Darren – very poor. They had a cracking Italian horse over for one of the big races in November, a 4yo called Sharstar who’d won some top races in Italy.

Seems to be more opportunities for genuine 2 milers there.

Yes, Sharstar looked fantastic winning the Gran Premio di Merano in September. Thats over 5000 metres (3m 1f), but he did win some Group chases around the 2m 2f mark. Unfortunately, most of these are for 4 year olds (Gran Steeple di 4 Anni if my Italian is correct, whih it probably isn’t!!). There is a Group 3 chase in Merano over 3500 metres for all ages, and we did look at running Flipper there, but Christian did mention that, although pretty much in the Alps, the course can get very hot in the summer and it probably wouldn’t suit him.

The only other country with a really major Group chase program from what I’m aware is Japan, but again most of their Group chases seem to be at least 4000 metres – the two richest chases in Japan, the Nakayama Grand Jump and Daishogai are both (I think) 4200 metres (2m 5f)

Theres the Pegasus Jump too and the BC Steeplechase at Fair Hills but that’s at 2m 5f too.

The NY Turf Writers Cup is at 2m+ (no idea of the exact distance) at Saratoga too.

Great to see Cyrlight back in the winners enclosure. Hard to believe that he’s a 9yo now.
