On a report from the Starter that RUBENSTAR (IRE), trained by Patrick Morris, was the subject of a third criteria failure, the trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that RUBENSTAR (IRE) could not run until the day after it had passed a stalls test.

Exactly how far does a horse need to the push the starters patience to incur the above? I’m not sure what went on down the stalls but it strikes me a bit baffling that a horse who has won as well as he did yesterday possibly faces a temporary ban from the racecourse while the running, riding and betting in regards to MISTER GREEN today will likely be brushed under the carpet?

In what way are the two related?

What was your issue with the running and riding of Mister Green? As for the betting, perhaps plenty were taking the view that the strong-travelling ponce was unlikely to relish the slow fibresand surface and the amount of sand likely to be kicked into his face.

Not so much related David, the irony was really a horse winning comfortably and possibly will win again on the evidence of his last run could possibly face a temporary ban whilst the non triers continue as pleased.

Any way behind Rubenstar specifically the original question is just a non sinister straight forward one,

exactly how far does a horse need to the push the starters patience to incur the punishment stated above

I didn’t catch a lot of what went on down at the start but from my gathering he went in and came out of the stalls so why would be need to pass a stalls test, what are the guidelines etc

Pretty much down to the starter, as the rules are subjective. THis is the main one :

41.2 Where the race is started from starting stalls, the Starter must report to the Stewards any horse which

41.2.1 failed to enter the stalls,
    41.2.2 unnecessarily delayed a start,
41.2.3 behaved in an unruly manner unacceptable to the Starter, or
41.2.4 behaved in a manner which resulted in three Criteria Failures being issued under Rule 43.

The rule 43 criteria failure is where the horse behaves badly in the opinion of the starter, or delays the start, but not enough to justify a report to the stewards and an immediate stalls test.

The trainer is given a written warning post race by the starter, generally referred to by trainers as a yellow card – three yellows in a 12 month period means a report to the stewards.

The actual stalls test is pretty much a formality. I’ve only had one experience of it as an owner, and the horse had to go to a race meeting, get saddled and be ridden to the start an hour before the first race, then had to go in OK and stand in the stalls for one minute.

My trainer was assured that the horse would pass OK when he met the assistant starter in the pub the evening before the test was scheduled!

Thank you very much apracing, looks like I should have done a little more digging through the rule book! Shame Sir Michael Stoute didn’t meet someone down the pub about Spanish Moon.
