Nore, none of those you mentioned were better than RB has already shown.
As for tomorrow’s racing? Yer ‘avin’ a laarf!!
I tend to stick to races worth £15k+ otherwise you’re playing with fire.
What’s that got to do with the price of eggs?
The point is that each of the three I mentioned ‘came from nowhere’ in their seasons – not even considered contenders at the point we are at in the current season. Yet went on to win the Champion and were not unfancied to do so on the day.
Of course, RB appears to have it all tied up form-wise at this stage of the season but there are still three months to go – anything could happen in terms of credible contenders on the day.
December 5, 2003 at 11:16 #92582Nore, what it’s got to do with the price of eggs is this:
I was trying to draw a parallel between the ones you say came from nowhere to win the CH and the possibility of something similar happening this season. When those you mention came through they did so during a relatively moderate era when there was nothing of the calibre of RB around. What I am trying to say is that that for an unknown to come through this year to win, it will need to be the best hurdler of the last 30-odd years or RB will need to be below his best.
December 5, 2003 at 12:07 #92584
as its very hard to win a champion hurdle i the first year of hurdling only royal gait did it and he had flat racing speed
you really are having to look at last years novices/handicappers and i agree with maurice on all known evidence rooster will have to run well below form
of last years contender rhinestone has room for improvement but horses that have lost in a ch dont have a good record in going on to win it. he is also contary to some belive not flat bred being by be my native and to me after the way he was campained last year has a lot of learning to do
old vic was very impressive in soft races but it was noted he made jumping errors in some so he has improve in more than one department
back to front may well be a spring horse but even his supreme win will have to be improved on and again the supreme hurdle dosnt generally produce ch winners
he may well improve but i think 2nd will be the best he can hope for
December 5, 2003 at 12:13 #92586So Rooster Booster is the best hurdler of the last 30 years? Didnt realise you held him in such high esteem. What about Istabraq and See You Then, both three-time winners of the race? Are you sure your real name is not ‘Came Cottage’? ;)
Anyway, this is stupid thread, Maurice – I don’t know why I’m helping you perpetuate it.
December 5, 2003 at 14:36 #92587Just because it has never happened before Ardross, doesn’t mean that it won’t one day, as unlikely as that might seem.:)
I think there might be options for Rooster if Hobbs looks hard enough. Would be unfortunate if these were really distress signals. He has already said that he wouldn’t want to take on Baracouda at 2½ miles.
ÂÂÂ

December 5, 2003 at 19:00 #92588Nore, I’m only addressing your arguments.
I have stated many times (on another forum) that I believe RB’s Championship form to be among the best of the last 30 years, and I’ve been rating almost that long myself.
Istabraq was a great champion but had no real opposition until his last year (Valiramix) when he broke down. Same with See You Then. I have never said that Rooster Booster is better than Istabraq (but I do think he is better than SYT), only that his rating for his champion hdle is on a par with anything Isty did in the race.
If you think this is a stupid thread you’re probably not the only one but no one is forcing you to contribute to it ;)
December 5, 2003 at 23:34 #92589Am worried to hear that he has been coughing
December 7, 2003 at 18:06 #92592Yes, Ardross, I’ve thought about this for a couple of days. I’ve concluded that they’ll blood-test etc during the week and if they’re satisfied he’s OK they’ll run him. He’s too precious a commodity to risk doing anything greedy with him.
I’ve also read concerns about the stable’s strike rate but the yard was (a few days ago) operating at something like 0.9, so I dismissed it as a worry. If I remember correctly, plenty of people were expressing concerns about the yard’s form in the run-up to Cheltenham last season ;)
December 7, 2003 at 18:10 #92593Mo – one good thing is that the stable has returned to form
4 winners in the last three days and cracking efforts by Double Honour , Flagship Uberalles and Shalako
December 8, 2003 at 16:24 #9259412 runners
RB
Spirit Leader
Mr Cool
Geos
Specular
Flame Creek
Davenport Millnium
Rigmarole
Hasty Prince
The French Furze
Chivalry
Tom Paddington
A very easy win for the Booster surely if he is in his CH form
December 8, 2003 at 16:59 #92596Interesting that Hasty Prince is declared, given that Jonjo appeared to blame the trip (over the same course) for his defeat at the Paddy Power meeting. Specular remains an interesting runner for the same stable…
December 8, 2003 at 20:58 #92598Rooster Booster is the horse they all have to beat following last years devastating win, however, this year he looks vulnerable to improving horses coming at him from all angles. Rhinestone Cowboy was third last year whilst still being a novice, word is he has trained on and is setting the gallops alight, also respected are Sporazene and novice Inglis Drever.
December 8, 2003 at 21:04 #92599Is that why they are putting that bucket of cold water JP Magnier on top ?
December 8, 2003 at 21:43 #92600The rooster’s form can afford to plateau out this year and it will still require something to make abnormal improvement to get past him.
I want to see Rigmarole run a big race in the Bula – I’ve backed him at 250.0 and wouldn’t mind laying him off at 10s
December 9, 2003 at 23:00 #92601Ruby will ride him rather than DM according to the SL site .
Come on the Booster !
December 9, 2003 at 23:13 #92605Good news! If he runs a big race that fancy price will evaporate. Still, I’m surprised Our Vic is still available at 60.0 (though I’d be more interested in 15.0 place only) after last Saturday’s very good run. I think time will show he was being asked the impossible trying to give that weight to Overstrand.
Still, I’m smug enough to believe I’ve got the two best bets in the race with RB at 13/2 and Spirit Leader place-only at 5/1.
