Even more evidence that Bernard is bonkers – I would not lay the horse at 13-8 let alone 13-2
December 1, 2003 at 22:39 #92497Ardross, if you’ve got 13/2 you can afford to lay it at 13/8 and look forward to a handsome return for no risk ;)
By the way, I mopped up all the 5/1 place only Spirit Leader at Betfair tonight
December 2, 2003 at 17:53 #92498It seems a forlorn hope, but I still haven’t given up on Baracouda switching to Tuesday’s two-miler.
The Champion would actually bring out the best in him in my opinion. He can go any pace and has greater reserves of energy than anything I have seen.
December 2, 2003 at 21:23 #92499Steve – if Baracouda was fast enough then he would have run in it last year .
The Doumens know that he is not quick enough – a parallel is Sagaro probably the best stayer for 50 years but constantly exposed over shorter trips e.g never siighted in the 1974 Arc .
In the Champion he would probably stay on into third
December 2, 2003 at 22:23 #92503Wat about Our Vic.
He is down to run in the hurdle on saturday.Wasn’t sure if he would go chasing this year but if he does go over hurdles then he would potentially have a chance?
December 2, 2003 at 22:26 #92504I presume you are joking Nixer ;)
December 2, 2003 at 22:33 #92506No not at all.
He won all his hurdles races last year with out being asked a question .Gave lumps of weight away on his last race and didn’t break walking pace to win.Ptu away after that and i reckon he could be avery good horse.Who would have thought a year ago that Rooster Booster would win a champion hurdle and the previous year it was Valaromix that came from no where to be very unlucky not to win.
It’s not always the obvious horse at the star of the season. Before that Make a stand won 8/1 on the day what price wud you have got on him winning this time of year.
I think Our Vic is a very good horse and I’m looking for a little more insight into the situation than "i hope your joking".
Actually mayb I’m wrong to suggest an outsider.
I think Rooster Booster might have a chance.:o
December 2, 2003 at 23:03 #92507Hi Nixer, Our Vic is entered for the william hill hurdle on sat. [sandown] if it runs we will have more idea then, but in my humble opinion it is no champion hurdler.
December 2, 2003 at 23:06 #92509Nixer’s points are reasonable. It is not uncommon for soemthing to improve an unusual amount and become championship contenders or even champions.
For me, the difference is that once you get a true champion performing consistently at a level superior to anything else then the improvers merely become contenders for places while the champs cement their position over two or three years.
Isty was of such a superior level even though his actual performances following his first championship, particularly latterly, were only marginally better than average, but he was reportedly very difficult to train properly.
Valiramix was cantering when coming to grief in HLL’s race but HLL wasn’t anything beyond average.
Rooster Booster is, in my opinion, on a par with any champion hurdler of the last 30 years. Nature decrees that he must start going over the hill at some point and perhaps they’re going to campaign him lightly this year as a result but in over 30 years of punting I have not seen a horse still pulling so hard in a very fast run race as the rooster was doing coming down the hill.
December 2, 2003 at 23:18 #92510I think that Rooster Booster’s preformance was slighlty overlooked after the Best Mate story but the champion hurdle isn’t a race as far as i can see that a horse comes back year after year to win.Istabraq was a very special horse the way he won it three times but that is not a common thing to happen in this race and as of yet Rooster Booster has to prove that he can produce it again.
Many horses win the race then that is all they do.Mayb a history of the race will prove me wrong.
Last year i saw Our Vic winning his races and he did nothing but impress every time.He may not have beaten much but as soon as i heard he was going over hurdles again this year i was very excited.
Mcoy would love nothing more than to win the Champ hurdle esp after the Valerimix incident and if this horse can impress on saturday i think 33/1 which is available would be a nice price. It is a shot in the dark but that’s why i get on at 33’s.
If i’m wrong fair enough and we will see on saturday but the market for the champs hurdle doesn’t look althat impressive and if self defense ;) and marble arch can place themselves in the champs any horse can.

December 2, 2003 at 23:25 #92512To be pedantic nixer self defence isn’t running in the CH but self defense is! ;) you obviously havn’t taken a lot of interest in the horse, i have and it’s got a chance.
You have made some very good points and pipe did wonders with make a stand, so who knows?
December 2, 2003 at 23:44 #92513You still have an extra "f" nixer ;) time to go back to edit.
December 3, 2003 at 00:10 #92514Self Defense was a very good stayer on the flat in France and is underrated
December 3, 2003 at 00:20 #92515Nixer, you’re mistaken about horses winning more than one championship.
Isty won three (only f&m prevented a fourth), and before that we had See You Then (three) and the likes of Sea Pigeon, Monksfield, Comedy of Errors, Night Nurse, Lanzarote etc all slugging it out at the top of the tree in what was a golden era, and other multiple winners going back to Hatton’s Grace.
It’s only been in the ‘in-between’ years that ordinary horses have failed to retain their crown because the overall level of form fell short of the greats. Rooster Booster belongs right up there.
December 3, 2003 at 00:34 #92517It’s a simple point i am making.
When Rooster Booster lined up against Mr. Cool he was the outsider i doubt if many people thought of him as a champion hurdle winner never mind a multiple winner on form he had previously held, mayb county hurdle.
Mayb he does belong up there but he has to prove he belongs up there and he is running out of time.
The champion hurdle form has yet to be established this year and I am looking for a potential pretender to the crown at a price.
Just curious though how long were the ‘in-between’ years are there between istabraq and the previous multiple winner?
December 3, 2003 at 08:11 #92519Nixer,
I think your point is quite valid, RB was not considered to be CH class until winning at the open meeting last year. If Old Vic slooshes up on Saturday, your 33s will look quite nice.

December 3, 2003 at 11:24 #92521Another perfectly valid point, nixer. I would never have backed RB to beat Mr Cool that day (it was a no-bet race) because Mr Cool was likely to be fit to burst while the Rooster historically needed a run or two. On the morning of the race there was no way I could have envisaged RB emerging as a championship contender. What we raw that day was a revelation. I watched in disbelief and McCoy on Mr Cool (a winner on his debut in the previous four seasons) tried all he knew to get RB off the bit yet Williamson appeared to be trying to strangle the horse throughout the last mile, and still had his ankles around the horse’s ears as he challenged after 2 out.
I had RB on 151p going into the race and 156++ after it. I reckoned he had at least 10 lengths in hand that day – good enough to win any Champion Hurdle of the last ten years bar Isty’s.
At this stage I definitely subscribe to the view (Ardross’s?) that any each-way bets at the moment are tantamount to throwing away the win portion. Best go for place only at Betfair if you can get close to a quarter the current win odds.
