Anyone remember when channel four tried having Lesley Graham doing the post race interviews on horseback?
I was always hoping that her mount would take off with her!

I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highways

I can’t remember that Purwell, but I think I’d have been holding the same hope as yourself!

I remember a young Ryan Moore answering a question from someone (I forget) about the new ‘Royal Ascot Leading Jockeys Armband’. He gave some banal answer looking even more disinterested than ususal, before wrongly thinking he was off air and correctly, and brilliantly, describing the new initiative as “an absolute load of bollocks”.

I’ve looked forever for the footage on Youtube without success.

I remember that. I think RTE did something similar for a time although they used a mannerly horse; Lesley Graham was usually on an absolute ignorant yoke of a cob that looked like it was going to take off.

Would have been great TV if someone mardy and hungover like Fallon didn’t like Grahams tone, and gave her nag a smack on the arse to make it bolt mid-interview.

The interviews at the end of the race are pretty inane but even worse are the ones by Harvey & Fitzgerald at the start. Thoroughly cringeworthy.
I don’t go along with the thought that Terrestrial TV needs to dumb down to attract a different crowd. If that was the case why have sectional times started to regular appear on screen with very little, if any explanation or analysis. The vast majority of viewers will have little or no interest in sectional times.

Hmm. Have to agree again. Harvey shouting at his mates “how is he Jimbo?” over the fence is pretty cringe.

Getting a reaction immediately after the race is hardly new, and the main purpose is to show the winner’s emotional reaction in an attempt to make it relatable to the casual viewer. There’s the rare occasion when it does produce a memorable response (e.g. Bryony Frost winning the Ryanair), but when it’s done so frequently it becomes largely forgettable, though it’s not something that particularly irritates me.

Similarly with the pre-race coverage; it’s not very informative, but I know what they are trying to do, and it doesn’t really bother me.

I can’t comment about Rishi’s involvement in presenting other sports as I’ve not seen him frequently enough to comment, but at least in terms of racing I think he’s a competent and professional broadcaster.

His Indoor Carpet Bowls anchorage is absolutely superb. “David Bryant, how does it feel? And please put out that pipe”.

Don’t get me started on Persad – part of me thinks he gets his jobs because he is the lest likely to offend the interviewee with his inane surface deep questioning and (as much as I hate to say it) that he sadly ticks a relevant box.

The mute button gets a real workout whenever he pops up on screen and it is a toss up between him and Robert Cooper as to who grates on my nerves the most.

For all the people saying that Rishi and various colleagues are terrible presenters, what is it that makes a good presenter, especially keeping in mind that the target audience of ITV Racing is far broader than racing specialists?

John Francome seems to be one of the most popular presenters of fairly recent times. Personally I thought he was excellent, but I’m not convinced he really brought a lot more insight than most of the others. I think a big part of his popularity was simply that he was a very charismatic and funny person that people warmed to.

We must have had almost two decades of the immediate post race interview. No good exponent of it yet and doubt there ever will be. The Lesley Graham ones are the first I recall. I think she was reluctant to do it and I wish she’d resisted more. David Nicholson instucted his jockeys to keep quiet at one point.

I suppose Rishi got a scoop on the McCoy retirement announcement.

He’s an annoying ‘everyman’ but I can tolerate him more than some.

LD73 the relevant box you referring to will have a few more ticks in the not too distant future.

Marlingford John Francome wasn’t it John McCririck who said off-air Francome would often criticize Jockeys, maybe not allowed to on-air shame.

The Great Man is currently coming to us Live from the Olympic Equestrian Centre with a bare minimum of detail, but a boat-load of sob stories for us to digest. He would be great on Britains Got Talent, probably.

Its dire stuff, but its fairly amusing how much the bloke annoys everyone.

“… a bare minimum of detail, but a boat-load of sob stories for us to digest”

Seems to be the way the media operate these days. Even Today on Radio 4 throws in personal stories instead of looking at the overall picture.

    Did anybody say “dumbing down”?

I knew the full story about the lass having a nasty fall and lost her grandmother a decade ago (the two were not related Rishi assures us), before I knew she had won a bloody medal!
