In last night’s game Crystal Palace had the first ‘goal’ disallowed against Tottenham Hotspur because one of their player’s NOSE was offside. Am I alone in thinking this is absolutely stupid?
My view is that only a footballer’s feet should be judged for an offside. So if both his feet were onside, but one of his hands were offside the goal would stand.
March 6, 2026 at 18:11 #1757322I agree that it should be feet only, but the offside rule applies to any part of the body that can be used to score a goal so, therefore, the nose counts.
March 6, 2026 at 18:34 #1757328Could some races be marginalised due to enlarged noses?..Said in jest..
March 6, 2026 at 19:32 #1757348First game I went was 1966 away to west ham Chelsea won 2-1 , then from 73 onwards never missed a game home or away but they have ruined the game and I doubt I watch a whole game on TV now days
I go twice a year Spurs home and away but even that game is not what it was. Dull boring sideways crap oh for the 1970 fa cup final style of football to returnMarch 6, 2026 at 19:35 #1757349Was Jimmy Greaves playing for Chelsea at that point nwalton… only ever seen videos of him but looked way beyond his years

March 6, 2026 at 19:59 #1757360No Nathan we had Ossie , Tambling Cooke etc Chelsea wore yellow and blue that day, while Moore peters and Hurst parade the world cup before game. Got tickets as my late father worked on the docks in canning town and my love affair with Chelsea started. Dad and rest of family not amused as they were either west ham fans or Leyton stone, dad actually worked with Harry Redknapp’s dad
Jimmy started with us but it was a couple of years before my first game, dad always said he was best goalscorer he had ever seenMarch 6, 2026 at 20:13 #1757366VAR is the worst thing to happen to football in the five-and-a-half decades I’ve been watching it.
I keep hearing its defenders say: “VAR is fine, the problem is the people implementing it.” This is total rubbish.
VAR is an attempt to impose objectivity on decision-making in football, which is an inherently subjective activity. It will never, ever “work”.
It has utterly wrecked the match-going experience. When your team scores a goal, you can’t celebrate fully… because there’s a sad act in a darkened room many miles away who’ll take five minutes trying to find reasons to disallow it.
The situation around offside is ridiculous and pathetic. You get ludicrous situations, such as the one highlighted by value31, when VAR disallows a goal for a toenail or a nose being offside.
Offside is given at the moment the ball is struck. But, if we’re being that millimetrically pedantic, is that when the man passing the ball starts to make contact with it, or when it leaves his foot? There’s a big difference, as you can see in 25-frames-a-second slow-mo. All that shows on the TV screen is a blur of foot and ball, which makes the fussing over whether someone is offside or not at the other end of the pass utterly infuriating.
There are many reasons why so many match-going fans across the Premier League are falling out of love with football. The institutionalised cheating, the prevalence of dull, safety-first, possession-obsessed “philosophy” football, the growing distance between lifelong fans and clubs who’d rather their grounds were filled with big-spending tourists.
But VAR tops the pile by a mile for me.
March 6, 2026 at 20:16 #1757367Spot on, nwalton. Jimmy had left a few years before.
But that day in ’66 you’ll have seen Charlie Cooke score the winner on his league debut for Chelsea.
March 6, 2026 at 20:55 #1757370Agreed broadsword car is top of the pile for ruining the game, back in the day as a fan when your side scored a quick look to the lino no flag raised time to celebrate.
Maybe I can’t relate to now day millionaires who play but remember after the game in the old Stamford bridge arms come 6.30 in strolls the likes of Ossie hutch Tommy Baldwin and hollins to have a pint with usMarch 6, 2026 at 21:24 #1757380“There are many reasons why so many match-going fans across the Premier League are falling out of love with football. Agree. The Premier League is rubbish, overhyped and overpriced. Give it up and watch the lower leagues or (better still) the non leagues. Much more enjoyable and far better value for money.

I remember Mike (Tony Booth) on “Till Death Us Do Part” joking that Martin Chivers had scored a few with his nose.
March 7, 2026 at 08:55 #1757406Jimmy Greaves started at Chelsea, had a brief spell at Inter Milan, spent most of the ’60s at Spurs and finished at West Ham didn’t he?
March 7, 2026 at 08:55 #1757407I can’t argue with your description of the Prem, CAS. Non-league looks more and more like a better way to get your football fix.
nwalton, I love your story about the players joining you in the pub after the game. Knowing the characters you describe, they’d probably have been happy to get together for a pint or two the night before too!
March 7, 2026 at 09:39 #1757420A season ticket at Southport (National League North) was only £300 this season. A ticket for our FA Trophy semi final on 28th March is only £16.50. Can’t wait!
My local non league team, South Liverpool in non league tier 5, is only £7 a match. It is still a decent enough standard and good entertainment for a Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately both teams are away today, so it will be Sandown on television instead.
Non league attendances have increased significantly since the end of the lockdown era. The Premier League still gets saturation media coverage and has a huge marketing budget but I think more people are seeing through the hype and are getting tired of being ripped off. VAR may well have been the final straw for many people.
March 7, 2026 at 12:17 #1757458He did, Drone. He once said, and I paraphrase: “If you ask Chelsea fans where I played my best football, they’ll say Chelsea; if you ask Spurs fans, they’ll say Spurs; and if you ask West Ham fans, they’ll say Chelsea or Spurs!”
March 9, 2026 at 19:05 #1757779Whilst I agree with much of what people here are saying, I doubt the league or the clubs care. As long as the grounds keep filling up, people buy the shirts and the TV rights/sponsorship money keeps coming in they’ll be happy.
The top clubs can happily fill their large stadiums with day trippers. You cannot underestimate how popular the Premier League is globally. Even if its popularity wanes here (not personally convinced it wil), there’s still a huge fanbase overseas that will keep the money flowing.
March 9, 2026 at 19:32 #1757791Very true. The Premier League is the most valuable football league in the world and the most lucrative league outside of the American sports. Even the Championship is inside the top 15:

I find it surprising that the Dallas Cowboys remain the most lucrative sports team in the world, despite the fact they haven’t won anything for ages. The list is dominated by NFL teams.
