Sorry, bit of an oddball question but why is it that the majority of British Jumps/Mixed courses have the Chase course on the inside of the Hurdle/Flat course(s), whereas in Ireland the majority of Chase courses are on the outside?

I’d hazard a guess that the hurdles course is on the outer at many British courses because they double as flat race courses, and hurdles are significantly easier to dismantle/erect than fences?
April 15, 2009 at 01:21 #221882Lots of Irish courses are used for Flat too though Reet- Leopardstown, Fairyhouse, Navan, Naas etc…. It’s probably a question with no answer, just the way it’s always been….
April 15, 2009 at 02:32 #221894Id say it is like that so you can see both sets of obstacles from the viewing perspective.
Haydock and Wetherby used to have the Steeplechases on the near side but now are situated right up on the inside of the tracks.
Windsor used to have the Steeplechase fences on the near side in the old jumps days

I believe the movement of the fences this season to the inside on the straight was due to the on-going problems with the new turf on the stands side.
Whether the fences will be returned to their customary positions next season I don’t know.
On balance the wisest decision would be to chisel-plough and double-moleboard the whole track enabling potatoes and oilseed rape to work their magic on the soil structure for a couple of summers
April 15, 2009 at 12:56 #221931That would make the Charlie Hall an interesting spectacle Drone, bit more like the Pardubicka
