Didn’t manage to see last night’s maiden voyage on RUK from Andreas Constantinou, but it does not surprise me at all that he has been well received in most quarters. The guy is very talented.
Glenn will be relieved to learn that he has had no direct involvement with Timeform to date as well…
February 28, 2008 at 11:18 #147089Thoroughly enjoyed his contribution last night and would look forward to seeing him again on the box. Hint hint! A clever fellow who reminds me of Roland de Wolfe. And a value man in a profession full of jolly backers! Like it…
However, soapbox time: I found the constant negative references to the standard of racing last night from both presenters wearisome and insulting.
If the racing was so dreadful, I began to wonder why I should be watching the show. Or indeed why I should pay an ample subscription to a channel which airs such unwatchable and unworthy fare.
One of the oldest rules in the TV book is never to patronise the viewing public and both of them did so. I’m generally a fan of Mr Luck too, but he unusually came across last night as spoilt and unprofessional. With his constant sniping, he set a bad example to his co-presenter.
In the US, presenter Rich Perloff on TVG is allocated similar low standard fodder at Philly, Turf Paradise and Beulah Park on a Monday and Tuesday – yet you would never know it to listen to him.
Like many people on the outer limits of the racing family, I’d have a kidney removed without anaesthetic in exchange for presenting ONE low grade afternoon card from Kempton – and I think the boys forgot that momentarily.
Cheltenham’s ok, but it’s not worth all the hype, yet both young presenters made the dubious assumption that all fifty thousand Racing UK viewers must be rabid jumps enthusiasts who are watching the show on portable TV’s from atop Cleeve Hill.
Anyroad. Enjoy and good luck. I’ve sent this post to Racing UK btw in the form of a Mr Stern from Tunbridge Wells style e-mail.
February 28, 2008 at 12:25 #147101Excellent point, Max. A race may "only" be a Polytrack claimer, or "only" a hunters’ chase, but it will mean enough to fans of either not to deserve belittling on air. The lack of prep work accorded the latter type of race in particular by some pundits is also annoying.
That said, I think I might have been unusually dismissive of one or two of Kempton’s races the other day myself – I should know better.

February 29, 2008 at 11:20 #147337Maxilon makes a good point about the pair of them being disparaging throughout the evening about the racing, it was tiresome.
As for the guest pundit, I find it hard to believe how anyone could "enjoy" the racing with the non stop barrage of verbal diarrhoea, although maybe higher quality than you would get from a Chapman.
Would make a nice change to see the horses in the paddock and going to post in silence occasionally.
Could be that Andreas is very well suited to radio.February 29, 2008 at 16:11 #147409Glenn will be relieved to learn that he has had no direct involvement with Timeform to date as well…

So, the guy that got his big break being hired by a Timeform wallah, who now works for Timeform’s owners and is now getting threads big upping him initiated from a Timeform wallah has no direct connection with Timeform.
Good to see the Sleepy Hollow mafia lossening its grip over the racing media.
By the way, I noticed on Monday that Mark WInstanley was being promoted on the front cover of the Post as the alpha male of the daily tipsters. As another ex-Timeform wallh might say: ‘as for the betas and charlies trailing in behind him, well I’m glad I’m not picking up the wage bills…..’
March 3, 2008 at 15:36 #148118Said analyst is on BF Radio right now – very, very good I must say.
March 3, 2008 at 15:58 #148125Whenever I’ve heard him on the radio I’ve liked him.
However, surely he won’t be allowed to be as honest as he has been on radio?
A few weeks ago he was talking about Sam Thomas. The presenter made very generous comments about Thomas’ riding ability. Andreas politely challenged the view and argued that in his opinion Thomas was not as good as others believe.
Now obviously this is a fair enough point of view, probably sincerely held. Whether I agree with it or not is irrelevant. However, given the often incestuous relationship between those in the racing media and owners/trainers/jockeys, this type of attitude is not going to do him any good is it?
Anyway, good luck to him.
March 5, 2008 at 12:50 #6964just got the latest RUK club pack through the post :
adverts for various bookies and setanta, a pack of playing cards sponsored by seasons holidays, an elastic band and the latest batch of free tickets for racing at the following courses : Beverley, Aintree, Newmarket, Salisbury, Nottingham, Pontefract, Kempton, Thirsk, Warwick and Market Rasen
i’m not moaning as i will use at least a couple of them but can anyone from north england confirm what they get in their RUK packs – are most of the free tickets for the other end of the country for you as well ?
March 5, 2008 at 13:10 #148582yes the same, just had it and I’m in Uttoxeter
March 5, 2008 at 13:30 #148586you could always send your Pontefract tickets up here to me, I will make good use of them.

March 5, 2008 at 13:35 #148588Do you have a map ?
Two of these course are in the south. Only one near London
Four are in the north
rest the midlands. Ok newmarket is borderline
March 5, 2008 at 13:44 #148589midlands, north, it’s all above the thames and that’s what counts
newmarket is a fair drive, kempton is easy, the rest are a chore – if anyone wants the others pm me an address and i’ll stick in an envelope – you need to send the voucher to the course and they will send you a free ticket, some have a second ticket for half price offer, says you need to be a member of ruk but they dont tend to check at the races these days as they dont do the metal badge anymore
i would rather have 10 free tickets to kempton or lingfield each quarter
March 5, 2008 at 13:50 #148591Whoops simon. Got you wrong there

Ill do the same for anyone in the frozen north.
March 5, 2008 at 14:03 #148593in all seriousness, is this worth setting up a ‘secret swap’ thread or would the ‘mod-police’ think we would be bringing ‘the forum’ into disrepute
any northeners want to ship their kempton tickets to me i’ll return the snowy ones back in place of
March 5, 2008 at 14:06 #148594is this worth setting up a ‘secret swap’ thread or would the ‘mod-police’ think we would be bringing ‘the forum’ into disrepute
Nah, they’d just think you were TRF’s answer to Noel Edmonds.

Ive read about those sites
March 5, 2008 at 14:12 #148598we could disguise our real activities by pretending to swap racing ticket-vouchers ….
