I only watch online and the monthly sub for a long time has been £15. When they extended the option for viewing to include iphone, android etc they bumped up the subs to £20. Existing subscribers got the first 3 months of the new service at the old price i.e.until February.
Don’t get much advantage from the new service since I could already watch anywhere using my laptop.February 2, 2014 at 12:57 #466861Pleasantly enough I get Racing UK free on Dubai Racing Channel during the Flat season, but if I was at home there’s no way I’d be paying over 300 euro a year for it anymore.
Sure they still have some knowledgeable intelligent professionals on there, presenters and pundits who come across as though their actually conscious of the fact that their broadcasting to an audience who pay a significant sum of their salaries, Hislop, Mellish, Luck, Neesom, Freemantle, Willoughby readily come to mind.
But there’s a whole raft of deadwood on there right now, broadcasting on autopilot, churning out staid race analysis, very little worthwhile (if any) opinion, formulaic interviews. The comfort zone at its finest. Deja vu television.
Oli Bell is their leader. Uber bore.
Too many well padded backsides there these days. Too little innovation there these days.

I do agree with that. The likes of Hannity, Bell, Morrison, Naughton, Persad, Steedman do absolutely nothing for RUK’s coverage, they are dull and lightweight.
I always love RUK when the likes of Hislop, Mellish, Neesom, Luck, Freemantle, Howard are on. If they are not I’ll generally switch off if there is another (terrestrial) alternative.
RUK needs to ditch the dross and focus around the quality they have.

I would disagree entirely.
Bell has a very annoying tone but is one of their better presenters and is actually showing some signs of getting better with experience.
Willoughby is about as infantile as you can get – a child who has never grown up.
Hislop has long benefitted from being the only female presenter with any idea but that alone isn’t really good enough and the cosy ‘partnership’ with Mellish is a long way past its sell buy date.
Freemantle has recently been relieved of his Racing Post duties. I find it hard to believe it was because he was tipping too many winners. Lucky to be getting a bit of pocket money from RUK subscribers.
Luck, of course, has been broadcaster of the year for the last 20 years which doesn’t suggest the competition was particularly strong.
Neesom is the old sage. Best taken in very small doses.
February 2, 2014 at 19:02 #466896Good or bad Ruk is miles ahead of the dross channel and ch 4
heaven help us if we only had the dross channel to watch
grateful for small mercies , its worth the 22 quid , hopefully quality Irish racing will be added to its portfolio soon

imo

It won’t. ATR has it for next two years.

I can’t believe that comment to be honest. Hyslop / Mellish is easily the best combination on any racing programme on any channel.
February 2, 2014 at 19:31 #466901Yes, how embarassing when they try and do a National Hunt show and they haven’t got any Irish footage? What a shame.
ATR do a terrific job with their Irish coverage.
February 3, 2014 at 10:44 #466939I agree Stilvi , the Irish coverage plus the vastly knowledgeable Gary O Brien are top Notch ,,I wonder if it will end up with RUK , realise they have a contract until 2016 , but it could be a different story next time …I sincerely hope so
The Uk coverage is pants in my opinion ,
imo

And by an absolute distance for me.

Seconded …best entertainment all round , plus 2 seriously good pundits who generally say it as it is !!!
February 3, 2014 at 10:54 #466943The Irish commentator is the most boring person on the planet.

February 3, 2014 at 11:15 #466946I see Lydia was moaning yesterday about the 3.20 Kempton, a 6 runner maiden being scheduled to be run prior to the "big" race at Musselburgh. It was delayed by 10 mins due to unruly horses, leaving little time prior to the "big" race.
Apparently this should have been foreseen according to Lydia but how many 6 runner maidens get delayed by 10 mins throughout the year?
Also, to be fair all the races at Musselburgh were of good standard and when RUK did have a free run up to the first two races they showed exactly none of the horses in the paddock for either race despite their presenter being stood in there.
February 5, 2014 at 16:39 #467147I’ve applied four times now for help setting up the service but never had a response.
March 7, 2016 at 22:33 #1236608Just watched the 160 minute Cheltenham preview. I like Mark Howard, usually buy his book and he unearths some decent priced winners from time to time.
Chris Dixon, I am afraid, appeared woefully out of his depth. I believe he is a flat man so why on earth was he put on this programme? He looked uncomfortable and increasingly frustated at being corrected by Mark Howard.
The Irish so called “expert” came out with inaccuracies at least twice. He said Cue Card started favourite for the bumper at Cheltenham – wehereas he went off 40/1.
Then, when discussing My Tent Or Yours’ chances of defying a season long absence, he said See You Then won one of his Champion Hurdles without having had a previous run that season. This is not true. To be fair to Mark Howard he said he was 8 at the time and can’t really remember it.
Why is it not possible for them edit stuff like this out? Do they not care?
On a day when they went HD it appears that they are fully ahead of the field when it comes to technology, but once again off the pace with their so called “experts” (Mark Howard excluded).
I wouldn’t mind if it was ATR, we kind of expect it from them, but RUK is a subscription channel and we deserve better.
March 7, 2016 at 22:47 #1236611Most ‘experts’ know little more about the game than many on here do.

Personally, I always find the ATR preview a good deal better than RUK’s two efforts. There are previews left, right and centre these days and RUK’a are just too dull.
