This wasn’t expected in today’s “budget”:

March 18, 2015 at 19:11 #846282Sounds good in principle but it could sound the death knell of racing. All it takes is one high street bookie to decide that paying to broadcast racing isn’t worth it (“We make much more from our FOBTs and football coupons”) and the rest will follow suit.
My money is on one of the more desperately attention-seeking firms to lead the way within the next year or two.
March 18, 2015 at 20:06 #846295I’d doubt any of the big firms would walk away from racing. But it is is an interesting development. Not sure what it would mean financially though so whether it is a good or bad move remains to be seen.
March 18, 2015 at 20:20 #846298A fudge, face saving fudge will be found perhaps …its not the Bookies or the BHA that’s the problem ….its the courses , they are the fly in the ointment , currently they get loads of money for viewing to the shops for their fixtures ,,, called media rights , its who gets that money is the issue , nothing else matters
Will the race courses roll over , give the fixtures back to the BHA plus the media rights along with it ??? not on your nelly Missus !!!!
The barristers will clean up ….racing will get screwed , sit back and enjoy the show …because the bookies will use the divide and conquer method for sure
Its possible they could walk away and say we dont need your product …but somehow I doubt it
Just my opinion , could well be badly wrong , but harmony between all racing power brokers is not exactly something that has ever happened ….
March 18, 2015 at 21:07 #846330Does the ‘right’ mean an agreement to pay a set sum for the use of all races at all courses or will the bookmakers be entitled to pay per race/meeting/course; hence enabling the choice of a race/meeting/course they deem to be bookmaker friendly?
For example could they pay for the right to use say Cheltenham and not Southwell, meaning the latter wouldn’t get a slice of the racing right wedge?
Or perhaps, given the received wisdom that Southwell is ‘bookie fodder’, vice-versa

PS these new emoticons are horrible
March 18, 2015 at 22:23 #846417oes the ‘right’ mean an agreement to pay a set sum for the use of all races at all courses
I would say yes
ps the emoticons are fun !!!!
March 18, 2015 at 22:39 #846433About a month ago I started a topic on the racing betting right which suprised me that it got no replies. Here again is the governments consultation documents on the subject which are quite interesting. The consultation is now closed. The links to the documents show how it might work and an impact assesment.
March 18, 2015 at 22:45 #846434A bit more info to go with the above,
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/406894/20150224IAaddition.pdfMarch 19, 2015 at 11:30 #846655Ken , sorry I missed your thread first time I think …but thanks for links
All would be well and good with proposals if
1 Racing Gov Body owned all the fixtures
2 Media rights did not exist ..and the courses did not have access to hundreds of millions income stream from the bookies..y .will they roll over and say we dont want that money ….no way Jose

3 Factions within racing could agree for once
4 Bookies would play ball without having to resort to the courts
Sadly none of the above are happening , so it is virtually impossible to see this having a single chance of success without High court judges getting involved , or maybe European court of appeal
In my opinion this has no chance whatsoever …
March 19, 2015 at 11:43 #846658Could this lead to a “Racing Run” bookmaker monopoly?
If bookmakers don’t want to pay the price then “Racing” would need to do it themselves.
Value Is EverythingMarch 19, 2015 at 15:52 #846779Yeah Ginger Interesting idea for sure !!! I think some fudge will be found , it will be the levy in another guise
Some heads will roll though !!!
