This afternoon, in Ladbrokes, it occurred to me – and not for the first time – to question the point of the Racing Post tipsters and spotlight comments. The whole Hayley Turner fiasco of Andean Margin and Aeroplane I could see coming. This was followed by Money Order and Philatelist turning out to be fiascos as well. And, well, hundreds of other horses down the years as well. There was no way to make a grain of buntz out of those horse unless you are bookmaker. If you’re one of those punters who still likes to back and win with real banknotes then you are forced into bookieworld, where they give you a **** price on a horse THAT CAN’T EVEN GET IN THE FRAME.
It’s like Nicholls’ f***ing nags. No value, no price and then they lose as well! What a f***cking racket this game is! Even after all these years it still takes my breath away.
But it got me to thinking how tipstering and spotlighting in the Racing Post should actually be.
Forget all this Pricewise sh*t and Tony Elves and one winner in a blue moon and you’re never on it because you backed their selections all the way to the bank manager’s red letter. It should be like this:
2.30 Ayr: No idea, really. McCoy’s on it so I spoze it’s gotta chance. If I make a fuss about it, the mug money will go on it and it will come in to nothing with people trying to buy a bit of money. Then, take your old granny’s hat pin and stick it on the card and if it’s longer than 10-1 back it each way and you’re just as likely to pick up some cash. Some crafty ******* trainer will have something up his sleeve than no **** can know about and Bob’s your uncle. Bookie’s laughing. Loud.
2.20 Lingfield: The entire card simply exists to generate mug money for the racing industry. Aeroplane will be worth not a wa*k by the time it goes off and, nine times out of ten won’t win, neither. Bookie really chortles. Leave the whole thing alone, if I were you.
1.45 Lingfield: We always advocate serious form study here, but, to be perfectly honest, I ain’t got a clue and you’re better off having a pint and getting your grannie’s hat pin out than sending yourself blind looking at the form for this.
Kempton 2.15: If form-study and race-watching could do what the tipsters say it could do, then Arfinnit should win this, or at least be in the frame. Course, racing being what it is, I wouldn’t bet on it. Stick the hatpin in. In all likelihood, you’ll be sensible, follow form and so on and back Arfinnit. Then something quite unexpected will win and the **** standing next to you will have it and be one of those annoying ***** in betting shops who has to give it the big one every time they win fifty quid. Add to that, the next time Arfinnit’s running and you think ‘nah, that b*stard **** nag ain’t having a quid more of my money, it will win at 7-1. Be told.

Conclusion, BOOKIE WINS is the best bet of the day and there ain’t half some sneaky ***** in racing as your best bet for second place.

Did you have one of those afternoons that betting shop punters would describe as "about level", Colonel Fray?

How many meetings in a week do Spotlight contributors do?

With 48 hour declarations on the Flat nowadays, it should give them the opportunity to really dig into a horse’s form and emerge with a gem of knowledge.

At the moment, not that many.

Yes, but as I said, that will only take you so far. Other factors are at play.

If by that you mean: none of what I’ve written is true, I’ve just got the hump because I’ve lost, then no. Am I sick of the racket that is horseracing, yes.

See the last race at Kempton. Typical.

Colonel. The game’s bent, all the tipsters are in the pay of big bookmakers. Get out while you can.

Is this sarcasm or did you fail to understand my point?

    Note to Corm:

have you considered asking prospective new members to send in an example of their work before approving them for posting. Allowing "The Colonel" onto these boards is akin to opening your front door to Ted Bundy. Only Ted Bundy could probably string a sentence together.

    I thangew.

On second thoughts, that could be a contender for post of the year 8)

I think I made my point all too clearly.

You should be careful of accusing someone of writing gibberish when what you really mean is YOU DON’T AGREE WITH IT.

If you keep having that kind of category confusion you risk presenting yourself as someone who hasn’t got the wit to string two sentences together.
On the plus side, it’s nice to see that Arthur Askey’s act is still being quoted.

Excuse me for not bothering to read that un-edited drivel Colonel Fray. All due respect but some of us have familes to feed and bills to pay – anyone who’s wastes their money betting on a/w shite (sorry Max) at Lingfield deserve’s what they get.

Bring on the festival – now have a gin & lemonade like me and realise punting to make a living is a mugs game.

    All the best

    DON MARBLE

It is demonstrably not drivel; and I’ve won a lot on all-weather – but more by the pin in the board than anything else. But I wasn’t just referring to all-weather. My point is about the tipsters’ approach. A little more honesty and a whole lot more openness – within the range of libel – about just what the punter is up against.
    1) What makes you think I have no family and bills?
    2) Why do you think I am trying to make a living punting?
    3) Are you feeling terribly smug or a bit boozed or something?

Sounds like Colonel Flay has had a road to Damascus type moment which, as he has now ‘left the building’, he’ll be able to contemplate long and hard on.

This sentence in itself highlights the folly of your post’s sentiment. Why not suggest something constructive?

Colonel, why do you worry what the spotlight tipsters say in the racing post in bookies?

I have never understood why people take tips from other people. If a random in a bookies or well renowned tipster off tv or paper tells me a horse is gonna win I will ignore them if I fancy another. If I fancy one and I am told it cant win by someone I will still back it.

Point is I would rather find my own winners and be accountable for my own losers! Its my money, its my selection.

Dear Cormack, I thought the guy brought a touch of class to the forum. Not.
However, in the circumstances, your swift action is to be applauded. There are far too many forums on the internet where gross profanities ruin the content for too many people and deter younger people from enjoying the main aim of those boards.

Am I the only one that finds this sentence funny?
