Often this provides some good insight, trainer quotes, live odds updates, going, non-runners etc, however, and especially in the morning, the gap of any update for around 3 to 4 hours such as today at Carlisle, when there are inspections, is not helpful at all. Maybe the reporter has gone back to bed for a few hours to return just before racing starts at half one, but for us eager to find out what is happening before organising bets it is not really on when paying for membership.
February 10, 2010 at 12:08 #275346The early updates tend to be done from the RP offices.
Apart from the big festivals the live reporters generally arrive at the course between two hours and 90 mins before the first race.

And judging by the sudden cessation of information at times, clearly leave immediately before the second last!

Far be it for me to be the defender the RP reporters – I think the flow of information dries up late on as they are concentrating on getting the reports for the paper and web site completed.
In fairness to the guys doing the live reporter they have a hell of a lot more to do than the just the live reporter.
Working alongside them most days I can vouch for the fact they hardly get a chance to draw breath during the afternoon. They are easily the hardest workers in the press room.
I can never recall any of them disappearing before the end of the meeting, indeed they are usually amongst the last to leave the course after racing.

RP reporter has certianly increased my profit since I brought the membership, well worth forking out for.

Mea Culpa

On another note – I don’t think you need to be a member to get the "Live Reporter" feature.

The ‘Live Reporter’ feature is free, MRW, though I must admit I haven’t derived any benefit from it thus far.
Trainer quotes are no more reliable than those either printed in the newspaper or broadcast by ATR and RUK, and the day I place blind faith in someone else’s paddock inspection is the day I give up betting altogether. Throw in the time it takes for the reporter in question to relay facts – updates on the results of inspections have largely been appalling – and the frequency with which Gordon Brown refers to ‘whispers on course’ and it’s something I can well live without.
Good idea, poor execution.
February 10, 2010 at 13:44 #275370Hard working barely covers it for Andrew King today – if you believe the website, he’s currently reporting from Carlisle and Ludlow simeltaneously!

February 10, 2010 at 13:57 #275373Tom O Ryan always puts a good shift in when he’s doing it, easily the best imo. Why don’t they get PaulO to do it, he’s diligent (ask APRacing
)…jokingIt has great potential but content and quality wise it seems to be pretty much up to the guy on the day, so its all a bit amateurish if you ask me.
Maybe the new website from RFC will do a more consistent job.
February 10, 2010 at 15:38 #275412Paul , can I ask what you do exactly ?, when you say you work beside these guys , whom I believe do a fairly ok job
Truth is, some info on course is better than nought, and some are better than others as is the case in all things human .
cheers
Ricky

Basically live reporting from the course – a sort of extended "live reporter" – observations from the parade ring, going changes, race reports and, if time allows, comment from connections.
This is a piece I wrote last year about what I do:-

Excellent insight into your profession Paul, you are certainly absorbed in the world of horse racing and from your work it is quite apparent you like a bet!Its just a pity you are such an uncompassionate soul towards your fellow punter!
February 10, 2010 at 19:10 #275470the RCA issue 600 press badges each year,
550 of them to imposters.
February 10, 2010 at 19:17 #275471Perhaps TRF could find a generous sponsor such as Mr. Dennis to send our very own people to each course and relay the info back to the Forum. How about it BD? Fancy putting your money where……?
