With the Aon off on Saturday and no news yet on a rescheduled date (may not find one anyway, with weather as it is), Barbers Shop makes a bit of appeal as a likely winner, should he be given the chance.
Top weights tend to do well in this with class an important factor round Kempton. I am sure Henderson would like to run him again before Cheltenham but the Gold Cup would only be 20 days later and that may be a worry. He has won 3 times off a break of less than 3 weeks so that is positive at least.
Does anyone have any news or views on his plans? 14/1 or a bit less would be very fair if he had a good chance of running.February 6, 2009 at 18:34 #208483Looking a bit academic now, if Kempton makes it….but hold on BS doesn’t run in any case. I am going to have a bit on now.
February 7, 2009 at 05:23 #208632From the RP website yesterday (or the day before).
Barbers Shop is unlikely to contest the race according to Nicky Henderson, who has other more likely runners among his entry.
He said: "The race is the objective for Fleet Street. Oedipe would have to come into it. I can’t really see why Barbers Shop or Trabolgan would be running."
Yes well, if you can’t see why they should be running, why have you wasted a couple of hundred quid of the owners’ money?
February 8, 2009 at 18:13 #208941Hi Shabby, I don’t often go to the SportingLife website, so I don’t know how old this is.
Henderson has said that Barbers Shop will go straight to the Gold Cup.
February 9, 2009 at 00:08 #209028Hmmm, well thats that then, I have backed him for the Gold Cup and am fairly confident of a big run there, more so now after yesterday.
RPC bet has gone though…won’t be the last one….ho humFebruary 9, 2009 at 00:25 #209031Hmmm, well thats that then, I have backed him for the Gold Cup and am fairly confident of a big run there, more so now after yesterday.
RPC bet has gone though…won’t be the last one….ho humFebruary 9, 2009 at 16:39 #209167Well I`m going to run Iron Man. Can`t find anything wrong with him and Jamie said he felt he was coming back a bit after his last run. I see I can get 100/1 . Thats interesting.
February 9, 2009 at 23:02 #209307Don’t tell everyone the price. I am on a Quest. I know he’s come down a dozen pounds from his peak, and that he hasn’t raced as often as in the past couple of years, so is relatively "fresh" for change. I’m searching through my pockets for some loose change at this very moment.
February 17, 2009 at 00:55 #10271Going is Gd to Sft, Soft in places.
Sunny intervals today, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Light rain Thursday.
Don’t know about Saturday.
I was taking/hoping the going to be Good/ Gd to Sft in places.
Gives Possol and Oedipe big chances.
Nozic was very impressive with his jumping at Wetherby. I’ve had a bet on the basis he is already jocked up, and therefore likely to run.
I’ll look up Endless Power because I haven’t looked at all the horses, but I’m not doing any more bets
I’m not sure I should admit to all this, because it might come across as the betting of a madman.
Main bets are Oedipe 24.45 and Nozic 32
Also done to £2 Nacarat 15.92, Possol 36, Fleet Street 23 (Henderson says aimed at this) , Battlecry 51.3, Iron Man 91.43 (has come down a dozen pounds or so from peak) and Ollie Magern 307.2 (has run well at Kempton a couple of times).
I think these are all suited to the course and/or goodish ground. Also backed Leading Atttraction, and have emailed Betfair to find out if I placed the bet before or after he died. If after, the bet is void.
February 17, 2009 at 00:59 #210616Oh, I forgot. I backed Ungaro when he won the Feltham (first bet for several months), and consequently have been interested in him ever since.
I think people have got the horse wrong because of that win. I think he is an out and out galloper and stayer on a flat track, and that 3m on a tight track like Kempton doesn’t suit him.

So you’ve got eight (potentially) running for you, Gerald?
As for Ungaro, I don’t think he’s been the same horse since he took in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham. He’d looked really promising in winning his first three races over fences, but the demands of the Festival seemed to knock the edge off him. Again he travelled strongly up until a point behind Big Fella Thanks, but then just became rather one-paced.
It’s difficult to tell what suits him, but I get the feeling the ability is still there (though I doubt it will be for much longer, ten years old as he is). Perhaps a move to someone like Venetia Williams or, dare I say it, Henrietta Knight would see him right?
February 17, 2009 at 01:47 #210623Like Battlecry @ 25-1 and Lacdoudal @ 16-1
February 17, 2009 at 01:47 #210624Yes, eight. But I scared of Stan. He could stay 3m here, and Venetia has him entered for the GN!
Ungaro needs Cheekpieces!
A small field, wide fences, fast pace, flat track. [edit: 3m4f+, galloping track.] Just guessing, actually.
Don’t think LH or RH, or Good or Soft make much difference. but the owner’s representative thinks he’s better RH.February 17, 2009 at 02:04 #210629Hold Em – Beat by Breedsbreeze in a novice chase and Breedbreeze got beat at the weekend, hard one to quantify in a race like this.
To be fair, breedsbreeze was beaten on heavy ground by probably one of the best 3 mile heavy ground chasers (let alone novice chasers) about at the minute. I reckon that the top grade 3 mile chasers will probably be put in their place in the future by carruthers if they ever meet him on those terms.
February 17, 2009 at 02:48 #210638Battlecry would be my choice if he were to line up but i doubt he will, i see
him as next seasons Paddy Power Gold Cup winner!February 17, 2009 at 03:52 #210651Lacdoudal e/w, could be very well handicapped on old form, looked like he came back to form the other week and usually runs his race
February 17, 2009 at 03:56 #210653Fier Normand has plenty running in his favour when you think he’s shown his best chase form going right handed when the ground hasn’t been too soft and over 3miles.
