Just bought the Sir Ivor/Nijinsly/Mill Reef boxset.
Only watched the Sir Ivor one so far. It is very dated in presentation but I really enjoyed seeing the old race clips. Most I hadn’t seen before.
Are there any other racing DVD’s out there with footage from the 70’s and before?
December 11, 2011 at 00:18 #382056Not quite as old as you’re looking for, but this is a little documentary featuring the great Florida Law and Welter Weight.

December 11, 2011 at 09:18 #382077You could try ringing Tindall’s in Newmarket and see if they have anything in stock or have lists of titles they can get. In the days of video they had a very good selection, it depends whether someone has transferred those titles to DVD.
December 11, 2011 at 13:13 #382107A few Christmases ago, I got a 2 DVD set called ‘Horseracings Greatest Ever Races’, with races between 1938 and 2004. It’s narrated by Clare Balding, and it’s pretty good. Unfortunately, the company, Green Umbrella, don’t seem to be around anymore, but there’s a bit more info about the DVD on Amazon:

There are a few reviews as well which might help.

December 11, 2011 at 20:58 #382210Get EPSN documentary on Charasmatic the horse that nearly won the American Triple Crown in the 90’s.
Great story.

Obviously, I have been doing some searching myself and it really is shocking how little choice there is, particularly for anyone who wants something from 30-40 years ago. Add Arkle to the collection I mentioned before and there really is very little else.
Plenty of words about Bula recently but how many have actually seen him in action? I would love to see the Champion Hurdles (in full) from Persian War through the vintage period. I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a similar collection for the Gold Cup. It is pretty poor that we have to rely on YouTube posters for a few golden snippets.
Perhaps the footage doesn’t exist? Perhaps it is just considered not commercially viable? Shame.
December 12, 2011 at 16:53 #382346How about the Cheltenham Hall of Fame triple box set. From memory it has some action from the golden era of the 1970’s.

Oh, there’s plenty of choice! This site has hundreds of DVDs with more race footage than you could ever watch in your lifetime.

December 12, 2011 at 21:45 #382392I have all the full Champion Chases and Champion Hurdles from 80 – 89, and every full National from 60 – 99

Could you put them on youtube? That would be fantastic.

Golden Cygnet winning the Forenoughts Hurdle in Feb; I was there that day, can’t believe the footage has turned up. I was also there when Dawn Run won the same race a few years later; I would love to see that footage
