Very interesting article on concerts at race meetings.
August 22, 2014 at 21:38 #488954Nick Smith, Ascot’s head of communications and international racing, summed up the principle behind the course’s annual one-off venture.
“Our research suggests that among a crowd of just under 30,000, there will be about 10,000 who are there specifically for the concert,” Smith said.
Who’s he kidding?
August 23, 2014 at 08:45 #489005Pretty typical out of touch publicity puff from a man that has never paid to go racing.
Briefly mentions the complaints about increased admission prices from regular racegoers, but doesn’t follow it up.
And of course, no mention of the fact that at several of the tracks involved, the stage erected for the musicians blocks the view of the racing for the paying customer.
I went to Newbury two years ago on the Friday before they had a Lionel Ritchie concert booked for Saturday. Paid £16 to enter Tatts and found the sound stage blocked off the view of most of the home straight from the Tatts stand. Of course you could still see OK from the press box!
My emails of complaint produced no reply and I haven’t been back. Mr Davies may rate The Racecourse Newbury, I think it’s a good facility run by total idiots.
August 23, 2014 at 08:54 #489008I had intended to go to an evening midweek meeting at Haydock Park, until I saw the hike in admission price. This was due to some poxy old band playing after the last race. £32 for all enclosures, with a low grade card. Hadn’t considered a blocked view by a stage.
I wonder how many other serious racegoers were put off by this?
I will wait for the winter meetings now. Haydock Park was ruined when they changed the jumps to portable ones.

Exactly the same here Crepello but not only have Haydock lost from me from the meetings with after racing concerts I will not be attending any other meeting there as well until things change. Don’t see why I should support them.
I’m all in favour of after race concerts but racegoers who are only interested in the racing should not be asked to pay £30 plus for a mediocre nights racing.
