I dont use any sort of ratings in my betting but today was a quiet day and I was looking at RF ratings (which are the same as Racing Post ratings) in the Raceform Interactive software.
Raceform define a master rating "as the rating which our Handicapper considers is the horse’s reasonable potential at present".
In the 3-30 at Folkestone one horse stood out on the master ratings. Marshman who is master rated at 96 was 10 lbs clear of his nearest rival Foreign Edition on 86. That looked a lot for a handicap.
Interesting I thought and I delved deeper. Marshaman achieved the 96 on the 18th June 2006. He has since run 11 times and been beaten out of sight in similar handicap company all 11 times.
His BHB rating in the meantime has dropped 16 lbs from 85 to 69 yet Raceform still have him master rated as a 96.
Anyone out there know how this could be or how Raceform go about adjusting master ratings. It seems way out of whack to me?
September 25, 2007 at 19:54 #116407Yes, the master ratings in Raceform are fantasy ratings and of no value. I don’t use ratings compiled using pounds per length, collateral lines or form but if I did I still would not place any faith in Raceform. The best aspect of the RI software is being able to export the raw data for use in your own custom database.
September 25, 2007 at 19:59 #116408Just curious. Is Raceform really worth the money? Don’t you get all the information at Racingpost, Sportinglife, ATR and other sites for free?
September 25, 2007 at 20:06 #116413I use it purely for data (just as well). Well worth the money for the data alone imo.
September 25, 2007 at 20:33 #116419I really only subscribe for the data also but if you don’t have your own database then it is still worth having. You can do a lot more with RI than the RP online. The service from the office is first class if you have any problems.

I think the master ratings in both Raceform and the RP are fixed as the best rating achieved by the horse in the last 12 months or so. They are not updated every week in the same way as the official handicap ratings.
When rating a race. the RP ratings assessors rate the runners on what level they think the horse is capable of running to at present. In the case of Marshman, he would be rated subjectively on his best recent form and not the master rating (which he is patently no longer capable of producing in his current form).
September 26, 2007 at 07:41 #116477Hi Wallace
I agree with all of your comments about Raceform. They offer a go baseline service and are always very friendly and helpful on the phone.
It doesn’t strike me as being run by racing people though.
