Whilst playing Monopoly Quiz machine last night a question came up as follows:

"In Horse Racing, jockey’s are forbidden to wear beards. True or False"

The answer was false. Despite never seeing a jockey sport a beard, I assumed that it was not illegal, but rather a matter of aerodynamics. Although, I imagine that Johnny Murtagh could benefit from modelling a false moustache and Billy Gibbons beard at the minute.

Any other Horse Racing facts that had suprised you over the years?

Seem to recall hearing one commentator suggest that, compared to chestnuts and the like, grey horses have a preference for muddy conditions.

    Ken West Derby
If the commentator was refering to offspring of Roselier he would have been spot on.
There have been many greys from this sire who do exceptionally well in the mud.

One noted rider to win while wearing facial hair was Davy Jones of The Monkees who won on his own horse (Digpast?) in an amateurs race at Lingfield while sporting a rather natty beard.

    LMAO!!

Having tried to recall current riderswith beards, the only one that springs readily to mind is point-to-point rider Jan Kwiatkowski. A lack of technique, rather than stubble-related aerodynamics, have prevented him from achieving much to date.

I remember talking to a chap at the riding school I used to go to – he had a bushy beard and said how much he hated wearing a chin strap. This was in the days when skull cap legislation was just coming in (required to wear one on a public road) and he was debating getting rid of the beard vs packing in riding!

Jockeys with beards? How about Victor Morley-Lawson and Clement Freud. OK, amateurs admittedly, but they raced under Rules.
