Well I can’t complain getting paid out 20/1 on Dodging Bullets and having backed Somersby each-way for this all season.
Shame about Sprinter Sacre – time waits for no horse. Sire de Grugy ran well enough for me to think that he’ll be a force to be reckoned with next season with a better preparation.
March 11, 2015 at 15:31 #825354Well done, Gord. Major celebrations!
March 11, 2015 at 15:31 #825355Go on the bullets, he was on springs barring the second last
Sad to see Sprinter sacre finish up like this.
March 11, 2015 at 15:34 #825356That’s broke my heart. retire him.
March 11, 2015 at 15:37 #825357Well Done The Ante Post King.
All over Dodging Bullets from a long way out.
Sadly that would seem to be the end for Sprinter Sacre, who was surprisingly sent off favourite after all that has gone on with his health.
Sire De Grugy proved that it’s one thing giving lumps of weight to donkeys and another thing altogether trying to race proper horses on better ground.
Mr Mole was my place lay here, I felt people got carried away by his win when Sire De Grugy fell. He got off on much better terms today but his handicap mark looks generously flattering.
Looking to next year it’s today’s winner and Un De Sceaux who are the only two on my radar. I have backed the Mullins horse at 3/1 and am happy enough with that.
Hail to the King of the Ante Post. Gordon take a bow.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 11, 2015 at 16:16 #825419Glad to see my main bet Dodging Bullets win, but tbh had more than a bit of anti-climax to it. Did not need to be at his very best to win. Paid to be handy with the other front runner Champagne Fever missing the race, bitten by a stable companion on route. Sire De Grugy well below form, made early mistakes and refused permission for the plastic shoes so successful at Chepstow. In plates on this good ground ran as though not entirely happy. Sad to see Sprinter Sacre so far back. Normally goes through a race with ease and never travelling or jumping well today. Obviously something amiss and may be retirement is the best policy. Somersby ran another smasher at Cheltenham, put in his best round of jumping for some time. Special Tiara profited from no Champagne Fever to take him on and gave them a fright. Dodging Bullets probably idled once in front. Amazing how much difference a tongue tie has made to this horse, now won the three big 2 mile races of the season.
Value Is EverythingMarch 11, 2015 at 18:38 #825614What a strange race. The two big guns failed to run to form and Dodging Bullets himself didn’t run his best race of the season in my opinion, but it was still enough with bottler Somersby and a legless Special Tiara the only challengers up the hill.
Dodging Bullets is probably just a filler Champion Chaser as the old stars fade away and Un De Sceaux, then possibly Douvan emerge.
March 11, 2015 at 19:48 #825955If SdG wasn’t allowed to wear his plastic shoes and couldn’t be shod with racing plates, what did he wear on his feet?

Agree with this. Backed DB, as had a similar profile of SDG last year’ Nichols’ was right, he should have been favorite, the form was there to be seen. Hope SS is retired, a magnificent creature in his pomp; just shows, you have to enjoy the good ones while they last.
UDS will be short for this next year, tho like every Irishman, we really much prefer to see the best ones going for the Gold Cup. Is there evidence UDS doesn’t stay? Heck, I’d seen Faugheen for th Gold Cup as well.
BTW is the Shark annoyed he chose the Ryanair for Hidden Cyclone? Looks like this race would have taken less winning
March 11, 2015 at 21:38 #826331Well done, Gord. Major celebrations!
Cheers Joe,that very nearly went to plan.I certainly knew Somersby had place credentials as I put him up at 40/1 for the race last year,I just didn’t think he’d run that bloody well.I might put up a 100/1 Champion chase horse for next year, mind you he wont be that if he wins the JLT tomorrow…Irish Saint
March 11, 2015 at 21:51 #826335Unfortunately Irish Saint is faced with the huge barrier that is VAUTOUR, and I expect that one to be competing with Don Poli for fav in the 2016 Gold Cup

Cheers Steve, normally when TAPK puts one up at 40/1 I get a bit nervous but todays race was Won the moment he beat ‘Sprinter Sacre’ at Ascot,I watched him in the paddock with his ‘knowing’ head carriage and his ‘strut’ and thought you only have to jump…Ok I did harp on about him sprinting up the hill but he did run faster than anything else.

I think Vautour has a lot to do to be in the same region of Gold Cup betting as Don Poli. Stamina has to be a big enough question mark for a Supreme Novices winner for starters.
I reckon Vautour is short enough for tomorrow’s JLT at around 7/4-2/1 based on what he has actually done in his chasing career to date. Fair do’s he probably just had an off day when beaten by Clarcam but he remains a horse of potential for now and his odds are more to do with last year’s form and the fact that he’s trained by Willie Mullins.
Should Vautour blow his field away tomorrow it still leaves the stamina question and considering they were talking Arkle and Champion Hurdle with him at the start of the year I am not convinced that he’s really going to end up a Gold Cup horse.
I suspect that he runs in the JLT because they knew Un De Sceaux was one they didn’t want to take on with Vautour. I have great respect for Vautour and he was one of my first picks for the Ten To Follow this season. However, I can’t say he has done what I had hoped he would so far and my confidence that he could win the JLT waned a while ago.
Only a couple of firms quote Vautour for the Gold Cup next year. One goes 25/1, which I think is more realistic than the, in my mind, ridiculous quote of 12/1, at a stage where this year’s JLT and Gold Cup have yet to be run.
He’s not for me but I wish you well if you are on at the 25/1 Joe.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 11, 2015 at 23:09 #826524Un De Sceaux ran in the Arkle because:
(a) He is not as good at 2m5f than he is at 2m; where as Vautour is and.
(b) Un De Sceaux is in all probability a better horse than Vautour. At Cheltenham Willie Mullins runs his best horses in different races. Say Vautour proves exceptional tomorrow, he will have proved exceptional at the intermediate distance. Un De Sceaux proved himself top class at 2 miles. Don Poli at 3 miles, improving at that trip. Therefore, (if they all remain fit) it is pretty obvious Un De Sceaux will be going for the 2016 Champion Chase, Gigginstown’s Don Poli the Gold Cup and Rich Richie’s Vautour Ryanair. It’s also possible owner companion Djackadam might prove top class in this year’s Gold Cup, so be his target next year too. (Although if not staying it could be the opposite) If Vautpour is impressive tomorrow expect what looks generous ante-post Gold Cup odds, purely because it is imo highly unlikely Vautour’s target will be Gold Cup unless things go wrong with others.
Value Is EverythingMarch 12, 2015 at 11:08 #827719I’m expecting Vautour to be his most impressive winner of the meeting and the best long term prospect. I doubt the Gold Cup trip will hold any fears.

Ptit Zig is certainly weak in the betting today. The connections are certainly very bullish regarding Vautour today and they may well be right.
For me, regardless of how well Vautour wins today, it’s a totally different test then going up against a horse in Don Poli, who keeps grinding and finding. I just can’t see it, much as I didn’t see The New One doing it either. One never knows in this game though Joe.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 12, 2015 at 12:50 #827952Very true, Steve. I’ve got Don Poli for next year at big prices and the same with Vautour: I think one of the two will win it.
