Looks like Sprinter Sacre already has this in the bag. So who will be placed? Most of the classy contenders will surely go for the Ryanair in order to have a chance of winning a race so that leaves Sire de Grugy as a virtually confirmed runner and the best of the rest. Each way at 25-1 looks reasonable as the place chances are good and SG might be 8-1 on the day, assuming SS is something like 1-3 and not many other decent horses turn up.
November 7, 2013 at 02:18 #457494Nice shout on Sire De Grugy, I backed him ante post for The Arkle at 25s last year, sure he would have placed too..
5/1 in Betting Without Sprinter Sacre – 1/5 1-2-3 And Non Runner-Free Bet. Surely this is a free bet to nothing and then some?
December 27, 2013 at 20:24 #463129Skybet have gone 5/4 Sprinter Sacre after today, with their now some doubt about him turning up.
I notice Cue Card is prominent in the betting again Ladbrokes going 5/2 Skybet 6/1. The Tizzards did say he wouldn’t drop back but they may now be tempted.
Sizing Europe, Baily Green and Kid Cassidy all disappointed in Ireland today and even Arvika Ligeonniere fans would be slightly disappointed. Although Benefficient won today I couldn’t have him in a Champion Chase.
Ladbrokes are 5/2 Sire De Grugy with Skybet 4/1, so based on Ladbrokes odds, who would you rather be on Sire De Grugy or Cue Card (If they both turned up?)

If Sprinter Sacre misses the race, the Tizzards would almost certainly reroute Cue Card here and he’d run and jump them silly. 5-2 would be a huge price about him, so the 8-1 available elsewhere has already been taken.
December 28, 2013 at 09:54 #463194Why would Cue card go for this? Surely the Ryanair is a better distance for him.

Prestige and prize money?
Not only is the QMCC a race with a far greater history than the Ryanair but it is also more valuable: connections of Sprinter Sacre took home over £50,000 more than those of Cue Card after their respective wins last March. Throw in the fact that there isn’t a chaser in the country (or in Ireland, for that matter), Sprinter Sacre aside, that could live with Cue Card if he popped off in front and made all in the QMCC and I really think that the Betfair Chase hero will be sent to the two-mile championship if Henderson’s charge remains under a cloud.
December 28, 2013 at 17:34 #463281Bobs Worth’s performance today on ground that didn’t suit and without that long hill will be giving the Tizzards plenty food for thought.
In BW and SC they’d face two horses for whom the hill will be worth 7lbs. For Cue Card, I’m sorry to say, it might be like lumping an extra 7lbs on as they turn into the straight in the Gold Cup.
Sire de Grugy’s a lovely honest horse, but he wouldn’t be in CC’s league, and if SS has the misfortune of not recovering, the QM would be there for Cue Card’s taking.
I’d love to see him win the Gold Cup, but even with a more restrained ride than at Kempton, you’d have to say it would be a major gamble if the QM lay open and waiting. He’s won a Ryanair – who wants two of those trophies with, as Gladiateur says, the prestigious title of champion two-miler up for grabs?
December 28, 2013 at 18:17 #463290If SS lines up fit and well in March then CC won’t beat him.
The Ryanair is his for the taking
The Gold Cup on Good ground is still very possible.
December 28, 2013 at 21:39 #463322I think SdG would give CC a run for his money at 2 miles. There’s only 5lb between them on the BHA ratings and the distance is better for SdG.
December 29, 2013 at 17:30 #463431SDG is rated 166 V 174 Cue Card. I’m surprised it’s that close. I’d have CC a stone better, even at 2 miles. He’s the only horse who’s ever got near SS over fences.
Anyway, I’d rather not find out by losing SS in the QM, which is the only way I’d see CC running in it. Even SDG will reportedly miss the race if SS turns up, though they might have changed their minds over that given the Kempton shock
December 30, 2013 at 09:26 #463469SdG is 169 on the BHA website. So only a 5lb gap on the website figures. However, as Steeplechasing points out, there is a possibility SdG will not turn up, and connections have reportedly considered other races in France. A cynical interpretation of this would be that SdG supporters were trying to get his price to drift so they could clean up on their ante post each-way bets when he does in fact turn up at Cheltenham. What they will do now is hard to say, but SS’s health problems must have increased the chances of SdG’s participation and his odds have tumbled accordingly. Perhaps an opportunity now to hedge with paddy power on the SS with a run market.
December 30, 2013 at 19:00 #463528I like SDG but he’s not getting within 5 lengths of Cue Card at Cheltenham.
January 9, 2014 at 12:17 #464310Cue Card not entered, surely for the small price of the entry it would have been worth keeping options open for Sprinter Sacre not showing up?

I’m afraid to say this highlights the limitations within the Tizzard operation.

I had £50 on NRNB @ 4s with B365. Much better backup than the Ryanair which is already run and at a fraction of the prize pot/prestige. Can’t understand this at all.
Needless to say I’ve been onto B365 and got them to refund me early to take my money elsewhere

I’m pretty sure there’s a supplementary stage 6 days before the race at which point they’ll know if SS is running. If he’s not, I suspect they’ll pay the fee to get in. The only other conclusion I could draw is that they are very very confident of winning the Gold Cup!
January 10, 2014 at 17:10 #464433But why pay the much higher supplementary fee when they could have just entered him now?
I won’t be getting a run for my money, but that’s part and parcel of ante post betting. What astonishes me is that the Tizzards believe that the horse has any chance of staying the Gold Cup distance.
