Goldikova showed why she’s considered the best miler in the world in the Queen Anne Stakes. But she’s got some company at the top this season. Paco Boy, without question, is a much improved colt from 2009 to 2010. I think Goldikova stealing first run and starting for home early may be what saved her the race. Because Paco Boy was finishing all over the top of her at races end. Rip Van Winkle ran extremely poorly. But, in all fairness, it was an awfully tough race for him to make his 2010 debut in. But to me, the thing about Rip Van Winkle, is there always seems to be lots of excuses swirling around about this colt. The bottom line is, he’s never come remotely close to living up to the expectations or reputation that Ballydoyle put out on him in 2009 as a 3yr.old. Which basically leads me to believe, if you compare Rip Van Winkle to the reputation that he carries, he’s massively overrated. Just my opinion.
June 24, 2010 at 00:02 #302860I might be pocket talking her, but I do think Goldikova was pulling out a bit more. She has proven her stamina over futher and was arguably in front too early – she seemed to kick again when she sensed Paco looming.
If they ever meet again I guess Head will employ a pacemaker just to make sure they draw the sting from Paco should he be ridden closer to the pace.
Interesting the comparisons being made with Mieqsue – as great as Goldikova undeniably is, thus far 6 of her 9 Group 1s were achieved against her own sex. Mieqsue’s 10 Group 1s only included 3 against her own sex.
By the season’s end Goldikova will no doubt have improved on that ratio slightly, however she will always have the shadow of Zarkava looming over her record (admittedly Goldi failed to stay in the Diane but was still beaten comfortably by the Aga’s crack filly in the Puliches) whereas I think Miesque was definitely superior to all the fillies she met at 8f or less during her three seasons – obviously Indian Skimmer out stayed her at Chantilly, and Milligram was lucky to beat an off colour Miesque in the QEII, the Stoute fily having been already slain twice by Miesque in the Boussac and English Guineas.
June 24, 2010 at 17:28 #302965It’s true, Goldi is definitely special, but Zarkava had to be much better, because her victory in the Pouliches wasn’t even her ideal distance.
June 24, 2010 at 18:13 #302969I’ve only just joined this forum, but just wanted to point out that actually 6 of Goldikova’s Group 1 victories have been against males (Prix du Moulin, Breeder’s Cup Mile x2, Prix Jacques Le Marois, Prix d’Ispahan and Queen Anne Stakes). She’s only won 3 Group 1’s against females (Prix Rothschild x2 and Falmouth Stakes). Obviously she’s been defeated in two other fillies only Group 1’s by Zarkava and lost the 2009 Prix d’Ispahan against males.
So all in all, she competed in 13 Group 1’s and won 9 with a second, two thirds and a seventh. That doesn’t compare too badly to Miesque, who won a Group 1 as a two year old as well as two Classics.
July 2, 2010 at 22:38 #304255I must be the only one who doesn’t see the improvement in ‘Paco’…

without seeing the regression of ‘Goldi’!

The lines are there…
July 2, 2010 at 22:50 #304260Your not the only one Zen

I couldn’t see him reversing the form with her in the future, quite the opposite!
July 2, 2010 at 23:01 #304263But we’re still seeing things a lil’ diff THM!

Not quite on the same green grassy plain yet…
