Well, I questioned Fortune’s tactics and I was wrong.
He got it dead right today.
September 27, 2008 at 20:44 #182558At last!
I was afraid he was going to be one of those horses you follow faithfully, but they never deliver. He wasn’t ridden like a potential non-stayer this time, and this clearly helped.
Gosden was undecided what race to go for at the Breeders’ Cup, but I’m sure the mile will suit him best.
September 27, 2008 at 20:57 #182562Well done the Ravens Pass, he’s proven himself to be absolutely top class. Stick it up the beeb who rated henry 5 stars, tamayuz 4 but only 3 for ravens pass. Didnt understand that for a second. Couldnt back anything in the race today because none of the prices of the top 3 appealed much.
I’ve said it all season, and I still think it now, Id like to see RP and Henry contest the Breeders Cup Classic. With the way ravens pass is switching off in his races lately, and the way he runs on top of the ground, he’d have such a chance IMO. Go for it gosden, its probably the best chance you’ll ever have. He’s got the pedigree for it, he looks the sort for it and he’s coming good at the right time. Gosden wont have the balls but wish he did…
September 27, 2008 at 21:20 #182565I think one thing JG dosn’t lack is b****s Bulwark. remember it’s not his horse, it’ll be the owner’s decision ultimately, although Gosden will have a big say admittedly.
Well done Ravens Pass. I doubted he’d ever win one of those Gr1 mile races but he won well today.
September 27, 2008 at 21:30 #182569Perhaps Corm, but he’ll have some job talking owners into going for the breeders cup classic when he is a favorite for the mile. Coolmore have took plenty of flack in the past when they have sent horses who have won more races than ravens pass, and it would be a ballsy decision to send RP there, but a very exciting one I think.
Henry could be a very good bet for the BCC now that he has been beaten twice and the Duke would appear to be getting backed for the Arc.
PS The Ascot Gold Cup is THE Gold Cup…Everyone knows that…
September 27, 2008 at 21:33 #182570Wondered how you have three pounds between Henry and Raven’s Tenbob? Surely on form ratings it should be closer than that? Raven’s is getting closer with every run.
Mark
my ratings are not weighted just points
based on speedfigures, racingpostratings, money won, highest value race placed, last race class distance and weight, going, collateral form, trainer form course and current, jockey course form.race trends.
all fed into my computer and bingo.
i am not clever enough to work out weight ratings etcDon’t wish to appear that i am criticising you Tenbob. Anyone producing their own ratings deserves credit. But…
If a horse wins a group 1 and then subsequantly wins another couple of group 1’s without showing the same form. Should he be rated higher after those two wins? (not talking about todays race).
Mark
ratings i do are for the race only.
so the winner who is rated highest will not necessarily be rated higher in a different race next time against same opposition.September 27, 2008 at 21:42 #182572That was a top class performance from Raven’s Pass. The tactics were spot on today – though from a Henrythenavigator perspective ( the horse I backed ), I did think that Murtagh should have kicked on earlier and try to gain the intiatiative.
One thing was categorically confirmed. Tamayuz is not even the third best miler in Europe, let alone the best.

September 27, 2008 at 21:45 #182576That’s a bit harsh, given that he wasn’t running under his optimum conditions (bit of dig in the ground)

Freddie Head said that ground conditions were not a problem for his colt. I think his filly is better anyway. Just my opinion.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
September 27, 2008 at 21:51 #182581I would say that Tamayuz is probably the third best in europe, but on his ideal conditions he could appear to be the best (maybe between him and goldikova).
Raven Pass and Henry are IMO the best and Im glad they got suitable ground in the QE2 to prove that, but that doesnt take away from Goldikova and Tamayuz’s performances on worse ground this year.
September 27, 2008 at 22:27 #182585I have that as the best mile performance of the season. Maybe its down to Raven’s Pass being ridden a little more prominantly? Earlier in the season he’d have been held up behind Henry.
September 28, 2008 at 01:09 #182600A bit dissapointing that ascot watered the track on thursday given that area has had very liitle rain over the last week and it has been very warm, the track looked on the slow side of good. this race reminded me of the the 87 running with milligram gaining revenge on the great miesque, with the champ going on to win the breeders cup,and i expect htn to win the mile given that the grd will be like a road
September 28, 2008 at 01:23 #182604Do not understand all this criticism about the watering. The times were fast so had they not watered it would’ve been firm instead of good-firm.
I thought Tamayuz had the third best chance on the day but would not judge him on that run. Lost the race before the start by sweating up badly.

Value Is EverythingSeptember 28, 2008 at 01:29 #182605Looking at Raven’s Pass’s progess, he got close in the St James’s and very close in the Sussex. So is it not likely or even (with the change of tactics) a predictable result. That may well be as good as Henry is, though I have not looked at how the third plays on form yet.

Value Is EverythingSeptember 28, 2008 at 01:56 #182612I thought there were some bizarre comments about watering / going today.
Raven’s Pass won that race in a time 0.24 seconds slower than Henry’s win in the St James’. That equates to about one length. Henry’s win was a course record in June.
Jockeys, trainers, reporters, bookies can talk all they like about descriptions of the going – but it certainly wasn’t slow!
I don’t know if there are any excuses for Henry’s defeat today, but slow ground wouldn’t be one I’d accept.
September 28, 2008 at 02:00 #182613Does anyone else feel that Henry may have been over run towards the end of this season?
What I mean by this is AOB always wanted a decent gap between races for Henry near the beginning of the season and now, as he chases the world record Grp1 total, Henry’s rest time has halved and look what we have….two defeats for Henry in little more than a fortnight.
A good run by Ravens Pass and realistically this was the form choice.
Great pace set by Racinger and Honoured Guest, really added something to the race
September 28, 2008 at 03:24 #182620I’d certainly be minded to oppose Henry if he ships out for the Breeder’s Cup.
