Bring on Binocular vs Hurricane Fly. It what we want to see.
April 23, 2010 at 16:49 #291971Brilliant win from Hurricane Fly, superb performance, and I reckon he’s a better bet than Binocular for next year’s Cheltenham Champion Hurdle.
Not saying that I’ll back him mind…

So don't run, just like the others always do
April 23, 2010 at 16:50 #291972Have to blow my own trumpet here, sorry! One to Watch for 2009, this was my vote, although at the time he wasn’t included in the poll!!!

My vote goes to Paul Townend.JohnJ
I know he is riding top class horses, but my god isn’t riding well, I reckon this guy is gonna be one of the greats.

April 23, 2010 at 17:03 #291975Hurricane Fly and Paul Townend are brilliant and Willie Mullins is simply in a class of his own
April 23, 2010 at 17:36 #291989I got slated for saying that Dunguib isn’t as good as people thought, as he had beaten trees in Ireland, and got slated again when i said the bubble had burst.
He isn’t good enough to mix it with the big boys.
April 23, 2010 at 17:39 #291992Poor Punjabi was last, wonder what is up with him not been himself this season and the only race he won this season was against Border Castle. Unplaced in every other race, seems like his win last year took a great deal out of him.

He never seemed to be travelling this time either – previously he seems to have travelled sweetly until the pressure came on.
I’m very fond of Punjabi, he’s done me lots of favours. Hope a summer on his back does him some good…

I thought he’d be the superstar we all crave Gaz but it just hasn’t worked out. Ted reckoned on RTÉ that you can scratch that run today off but I’m not so sure. He definitely doesn’t have the speed for the likes of Hurricane Fly and Solwhit so you have to question why they keep holding him up, especially when he was always handyish as a bumper horse.
I suspect chasing may be on the agenda. He should definitely be popped over a few fences before he’s put out in the field for the summer to see how he takes to them.
Great to see the Fly back. Makes me wonder what might have been for my bank balance had he turned up at Cheltenham.
Another easy one for Willie just now. The guy is just incredible at Punchestown. He’s almost as good as Weld at Galway. He said on RTÉ after HF won that he felt his bumper horse was his best chance for the day!

So it seems my friend.
I dont see why today’s race should be scratched off, was nothing wrong with the ride and so on, just not good enough. He’s not getting any younger so they need to make a decision for him and get him campaigned better next season. His campaign this season didnt help him in terms of expectations.
April 23, 2010 at 18:25 #292014solwhit ran a blinder, considering the hard season its had compared to hurricane fly. 3/1 was a dream.
April 23, 2010 at 20:20 #292049Incidentally, how many times does Medermit need to finish ahead of Punjabi until people give hime some credit for it?

He was relatively handy in the small field, soft ground bumpers in Ireland but he came from well behind in the Festival Bumper and that remains easily his most impressive win. He was certainly handy enough today. I don’t think it matters how he is ridden against the better two milers because it looks as if he has been exposed as not good enough. They can try him over further but if that fails not sure where they will go as chasing has never been high on the agenda.

I backed him at Cheltenham and today but will not be in a hurry to support him again. He looked to be travelling sweetly but fluffed one hurdle and in a few strides was effectively ‘gone’. Similarly to Cheltenham I was surprised that Thornton seemed to almost accept the situation rather than really bustle him along to maintain contact. Presumably, he eventually ran on past beaten horses but it was another strange performance.

He was held up in the Cheltenham bumper (different sphere granted) but he took it up long before turning in and didn’t stop galloping all the way up the hill to the line. He was held up for the first mile today but pulled his way to the front going down the back. I agree with you that he doesn’t have enough speed to take on the likes of Hurricane Fly who has form with 10f Group 1 horses on the flat. I just find it strange that Philip Fenton didn’t take a chance today and tell Brian to try and make it or at least be up there with the pace especially when there was no obvious frontrunner.
I doubt he’ll ever be Champion Hurdle class now anyway but I’d have liked to see how he would have ran if they tried riding him a bit more positively. I’d say it is fairly certain he’ll stay hurdling listening and reading Fenton’s comments all year. The best I can see him achieve over timber would be races like the Hattons Grace though. Whether he’d take to jumping fences, who knows? It wouldn’t do any harm to school him over a few and see how he handles them IMO.

We’ve known for a long while how good he is, people have never given him credit, we thought that in the run up to the Champion Hurdle, he is a decent horse.
April 23, 2010 at 21:06 #292060IMO a good to soft Champion Hurdle between Solwhit, Hurricane Fly and Binocular could be a serious, serious race.

It only occured to me because today because I was looking through my Peter Marsh day racecard earlier. That said Punjabi should beat Medermit ‘this time’ & it’s all the press have said regarding the two ever since.
It’s a good job that it was an exciting race because otherwise I might have just focused on those two the whole way around.
