Does anyone know how the prizemoney is split. I.E. what percentage does a jockey and trainer get ? My understanding is it is about 7.5% but may vary. Can’t find anything on BHA site.
March 15, 2013 at 22:00 #433084In the US typically the jockey and trainer will each get a 10% cut of the purse. The jockey’s agent and jockey’s valet will each get a portion of the jockey’s 10%. So in other words, of the total purse money allocated to the horse:
Owner: 80%
Trainer: 10%
Jockey: 6.5% to 8%
Jockey’s agent: 1% to 2.5%
Jockey’s valet: 1%
The groom and exercise rider are employed by the trainer and depending on the conditions of their employment they may also get a 1-2% cut of thewinning
purse. And then there are HPBA fees, insurance, the jockey mount fee, and other little fees which the owner must pay every time they race.
I assume the UK purse split isn’t that different.
March 16, 2013 at 12:30 #433186It’s tucked away in the rules

Line one is actually blank – the others have a comprehensive breakdown
