Moonlight Cloud was a bit unlucky in the race last year getting badly checked 2 out and did well to finish as close as she did. Broke the track record last week over the extended 6 and seems to be better than ever this year. Dawn Approach has had some tough races and may have lost a bit of his Guineas sparkle. Intello doesn’t seem to have beaten much and may find the mile a bit too sharp. MC for me.

I don’t think Jim Bolger would have entered Dawn Approach in this unless he thought he was ready for another battle, because it’s not going to be easy with the likes of Intello and Elusive Kate in the race.
Of course I;m backing Dawn Approach to win this but having a saver on Elusive Kate at 9/1 to beat the boys as the Stable and Jockey are in fine fettle with Buick securing a 4 timer at Newmarket tonight.

Dawn Approach to be followed home by Moonlight Cloud for me.

Whatever the result the contemplation makes for an exciting race. Can’t wait!

Moonlight Cloud’s record is pretty impeccable. She’s a little horse who can find trouble. This fact explains all of her bad runs since she matured into a good horse: Ascot behind Deacon Blues, behind Excelebration in last year’s race (would have won), and the Breeders’ Cup.

But all we have to go on re: mile form is her uninspiring win over Farhh. I think 6 furlongs is a bit short of her best (can be left flat-footed, Restiadargent matched her in the Black Caviar race) so I’m leaning towards a mile being alright for her now that she has done it a few times.

Dawn Approach is being treated as the most reliable horse with no chinks in his armor. But I’m leaning towards Intello being a bit more brilliant than DA, and MC getting the mile and proving just about as good as DA. Intello was unimpressive last start but could have been unfit or green down the straight. But the burst of speed he showed in the Guineas & PrixduJC gives me confidence in his ability.

Phew that was close. Left them for dead a furlong out and just held on but what a brilliant filly she is.

I’m inclined to have an e/w punt on Olympic Glory.
    G

Hard luck with that one, almost an inspired selection there.

Moonlight Cloud must have given her backers palpitations and was running on fumes at the end. Dawn Approach was as flat as a witches bosom and I think he ran way below his best today, proving that no matter how tough they seem, the well dries up if you dip into it every time a race comes along. Elusive Kate ran gamely enough but is not quite at the very top, a remark that also applies to Declaration Of War. Intello was pushed along fairly early on and this vaunted "Electric turn of foot" that he is supposed to possess was not in evidence in any shape or form today. He looks like a horse who needs another two furlongs and slower horses to flatter his finishing kick. I said beforehand that I doubted what he had beaten and considered him a talking horse, Joni Bake, you owe me a pint LOL

Hannon outgunned Bolger in the training stakes today with his stable star sitting with his feet up watching his old sparring partner toiling, while quietly muttering "Who’s the daddy now Dawnie"

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I agree with almost all of that Steve except your Intello comments. He has run a stormer against crack milers and will be hard to beat once stepped up. I’ll buy you a pint anyway!

    Thanks Steve
I have to admit I thought he was going to get there at the death, but none the less I still came out well on top so I can’t grumble.
The reservations you had about Intello were justified and Nathan had it pegged with Dawn Approach having had too hard a run up to this.
This could be a good weekend for me as I also had a pre tournament bet on Henrick Stenson for the PGA at 22-1. He’s best priced 100/30 now, and two off the lead for the last round…..fingers crossed.

Intello ran a stormer but the people who should be most happy with that are those who have backed him for the arc as it might put some pressure on Fabre to up him in distance. They just dont look interested in him taking Flintshire.

While DA may have been to the well too many times, clearly Declaration of War is tough little bugger as he has also been to every dog fight this year and ran very well again.

I’ve only seen the last half of the race which was being shown on the big screen at Leicester and was delighted with Olympic Glory’s run to finish ahead of Intello who like OG has had a nice campaign and not overraced unlike DA who must now be exhausted and in dire need of a break, poor planning by Bolger to run him here.

As a normal French Derby winner tackling the best milers I would normally agree wholeheartedly that Intello had run a great race dropping in trip to face specialists. However, the new kid on the block was being peddled in some parts as the best horse at a mile as well, with this superb turn of foot that was going to paralyze the Farhh who won the Lockinge in such great style if they met at a mile. He was put into the race as 11/8 fav with Bet Victor when odds first became available and that was a pretty strong indicator of the hype surrounding him. He’s a great horse, no doubt whatsoever about that but he may end up as best at around 10f, just missing the classic distances. You get the feeling Flintshire is the one from the stable for the Arc so it may end up Intello will be best served in the Champion Stakes where Al Kazeem may or may not go depending how the ground is at York for the International.

I have to stay with Al Kazeem until he loses and he is odds on for York after being 7/2 a couple of weeks ago. Mukhadram was 6/4 for his race at York the other week before winning at 4/9

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Well you are certainly right that hindsight shows us they made the wrong decision in taking in this race. When you think of how sparse the quality is at 10f you wonder why they didn’t think about the Eclipse or Juddmonte – neither of which he was even entered in!

I think you may also be right about the Arc. I would like to see him supplemented for the Irish Champ and then double up in e English version.

Dawn Approach is reportedly on antibiotics having scoped badly after the race. I would probably have scoped badly myself but suffered a low blood sugar after my lunchtime injection of insulin and by time I got back in shape it was too late to reach the local bookies for what would have been an abortive bet.

Fabre has said he is leaning towards the Arc with Intello, so there’s hope for his backers for that one.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Moonlight Cloud mightily impressive when breaking the track record. Dawn Approach needs a break and Inello needs a step up in trip.
