I was surprised that SYT was ridden that far off the pace in the Arc today.
October 2, 2011 at 18:06 #372763Well done to all backers of DANEDREAM i was dissapointed by run of Galikova what you guys think why she ran bad.
October 2, 2011 at 19:47 #372769I’m more than happy to see that Danedream is supplemented for the Arc as I think she represents great value. She’s a 3y filly, has G1 form and destroyed the last two times a solid field in Germany. I’m happy enough to take 25/1 EW for her.
Well, it was a great day. For me and my betting account and for German racing as well. I think this was a very competitive Arc field today. Was very exited before the race anyway. And now after the race I just think it was a very fair race. There was a good pace, it was good ground, the field not too big, no hard luck stories… nothing to complain about, actually. So we’ve just seen a very, very, very good winner today. Danedream won about five lenghts… easily… against some very good horses. I wasn’t sure that she would be that good, but I was sure that she could go very well. Did you see how she quickened at Baden-Baden? It was amazing. Same today. She killed the field with her acceleration. And again, I think it was a fair race. Well, the draw wasn’t the best for some horses. Nevertheless Sarafina got the race that suits her for example. She had every chance but was just not good enough today. That’s racing.
Think SNA run a very good race as Snow Fairy did as well, obviously. So You Think run a fine race too but had just too much to do from that far behind. But the way he finished showed clearly that he stays 12 furlongs well enough. In my mind at least. However I was very disappointed about Galikova. She was the most likeliest winner for me but was already beaten before the race really started. But who cares on a day like this. Well done Danedream anyway!
October 2, 2011 at 19:55 #372771Galikova took a bump early on and hampered workforce slightly. I’m not sure it affected them too much and think they both probably suffered on the ground a little.
I personally think that the draw did for Snow Fairy, So You Think and Sarafina. Wouldn’t say they would have won but the complexion of the race may have been different. I think criticisms of the jockeys on SYT and Sarafina are wrong. They both had to drop in at the rear because of their draw with Sarafina opting for the outside and SYT for the inside. They just had too much to do at the end but not sure the jockeys could do too much about it.
How good the winner is I’m not sure but she deserves full credit and may be better than many believe and deserves our congratulations.
October 2, 2011 at 20:32 #372774Agree that the draw killed SYT and possibly Sarafina.
I’ve seen many iterations of fast ground over the years in Hong Kong and that race seems to suggest that we have have seen one of those surfaces on which ground is hard to make and positioning is vital. Salure sticking on after wasting a ton of energy going very wide in Dabirsim’s juvenile race suggests that. Kasbah Bliss came from last in his race but only had maybe a few lengths to make up and has an exceptional turn-of-foot, and longshot Tres Rock Danon stuck on for 2nd from on the pace.
October 2, 2011 at 20:48 #372777Well done to the winner of the race, clearly top class. The time she posted is spectacular.
Was anyone else disappointed with the TV coverage today. This is supposedly the premier european horse racing flat event of the year and the TV coverage was dreadful. I’m not blaming any of the UK channels as I guess they just get the feeds from french TV.
I’m not aware of any uk or ire course that has a different winning post for races within the same meeting. Is there a reason for this ? The tv cameras seemed to be focused on the winning post for the arc, making the coverage of the previous races confusing. We seemed to only get a reverse view of the conclusion to these races after they pasted the arc winning post. For instance it was impossible to get a clear picture of the conclusion to the Goldikova/Dream Ahead race. Also all the replays of the arch finish seemed to exclude the winner, the cameras where focused on the finish for 2nd place.
Maybe I need a new TV but the coverage really leaves a lot to be desired.October 2, 2011 at 20:55 #372778Galikova’s big day was in the Vermeille this season, she sweated up on a hot day and was probably not comfortable on the going. Next year I think she will be a leading player in the middle distance division.
Hard to make a kind assessment about Workforce, connexions would have been better served sending him to stud at the end of his classic year. It was noticeable when Ryan Moore asked him for an effort in the straight he veered markedly to his left again. Whether this is due to some injury or because of temperament I’m not sure. Given that this was a much stronger renewal than last year one has to admire the sporting gamble the owner took.
So You Think ran well enough but I think the going was faster than ideal for him as well. The draw certainly did him and Sarafina no favours but it would be optimistic to say they could have beaten Danedream even with a more favourable draw. St Nicholas Abbey ran perhaps a career best, but essentially he comes up just short against the very best.
The winner had shown no preference as to ground conditions and to win so decisively can only mean she was a thoroughly deserved victor.
October 2, 2011 at 21:35 #372786Robertbob just wondering is the person
you quoted a family member ? I was
actually thinking of an identical twin.
Nothing like a blood tip. It’s how the
Mafia started.
It’s just got to be the Hotel Raphael
if you ever consider visiting Longchamp.
It’s around about a monkey a night,
but darwinian fun when the lights go out
October 2, 2011 at 21:47 #372787Lots of griping on certain other UK-based forums about the "substandard Arc".
If Stacelita goes in the F&M Turf, I think Danedream’s connections should shoot for the big money in the BC Turf. So You Think is likely going in the Classic, as O’Brien thinks he’ll handle the dirt well.
It looks like an all-female sweep of the three top races (Havre de Grace in the Classic, Danedream/Stacelita in the Turf, Goldi in the Mile) is entirely possible.
October 2, 2011 at 21:50 #372788even though i backed so you think, im still adament that its the jockeys fault for the loss. to have the horse that far back in the race, surely he was riding to instructions. but i suppose thats a thing we will never know.
as for the judgements being made on other jockeys, why did the best jockey riding not have a ride in the arc?

I don’t think it was his fault. He had bad draw and had to drop in behind.
October 2, 2011 at 22:23 #372791as for the judgements being made on other jockeys, why did the best jockey riding not have a ride in the arc?
Because Richard Hannon didn’t have a runner?
October 2, 2011 at 23:10 #372793I have read the post race analysis
in here and its been of interest.
Good luck to any other members of
the family who were lucky enough
to know more than the german trainer.I suppose Sportsweld will be full
of it tomorrow – well whenever it
comes out – think it used to be
twice weekly, but forget the days
of the week. Tuesday and Friday
I think.So civilized out there – I remember
being offered kaffe und kuchen
by the guy running the bookI never get heavily involved in the Arc
its a rough race – too many horses –
too many countries – different seasons.Getting back to the Hotel Raphael
I have word that a large contingent
of americans have bottlenecked
the english bar and are icing up burnt fingers
in rows of double jack daniels.
Lot of tips flying about for Merkel too.October 3, 2011 at 01:48 #372797With Pour Moi gone, Workforce showing signs he’s gone backwards rather than forward and Nathaniel sidestepping the race there’s little doubt in my mind the French and UK trained horses middle distance horses have been shown to be a pretty moderate lot.
This German trained horse didn’t just beat them she destroyed them and making excuses for anything would be pretty foolish.
So You Think has been the centre of attention most of the season but the fact is he was beaten fair and square by Rewilding who flopped in both the 2010 Derby and St Leger, just managed to beat Workforce who was firmly put in his place by Nathaniel.
He’s ran pretty much to form with Snow Fairy and it must be said he’s another hyped to hell Aiden O’Brien would be superstar.
Sarafini has been in good form and went off favourite based mainly on the fact she was supposidly unlucky last year, despite the fact it was clear she would never have won.
Danedream is obviously very useful but how good is hard to judge, There certainly must be question marks on just how good this field were.
The good news is she will stay in training and hopefully she’ll cross over to the UK for something like the King George and Queen Elizabeth.
October 3, 2011 at 06:33 #372803Workforce goes better on soft tracks doesn’t he? Well there’s a reason for his poor performance.
My opinion for the Aussie was he was just too far back, pulled lengths off the majority of the field and held pace with the winner (who one person in this thread has already labelled the best middle distance horse in the world now
) from the top of the straight. In my opinion it was a very poor ride. The horse has great tactical speed that was not used at all in this race. Despite running 4th I’d forget about the run, he’s better than that. I honestly think he’s more a 1600-2000 horse anyway, although also think he has now proven he can run a decent 2400 too.Wonder if they’ll retire him now? Or go on the the breeders cup?
October 3, 2011 at 07:38 #372806The Arc filly Danedream once again thrusts Lomitas at the forefront of racing.
I was a great admirer of Lomitas and can remember the same buzz as Dancing brave there in Germany those many years ago.Unfortunately I shared the same fate as the horse having been poisoned by an unscrupulous german. My health has like the horses suffered badly, Lomitas was finally sent to America and ran unconvincingly. I returned to England but I unlike Lomitas was unable to even walk a short distance. I am now fully recovered.
Below is included part of the story
Dick Francis writes crime novels set in a horsey background. As he was a famous jockey himself, non of the skulduggery and criminal energy might have been strange to him, but even he is yet to envisage what happened to Lomitas. So many years later Simons eyes still cloud over when talking about the subject of the bribe letter and the threat to Lomitas life, his whole body language mirroring the fear and pressure all them close to the horse must have felt at the time.
Some time after Hamburg a letter reached Walther Jacobs, claiming a huge amount of money and threatening to kill the horse if the claim was not met. It was an unheralded act, unparalleled in Germanys racing history, and while it was met with caution people involved where clearly uncertain how serious this threat was to take and how careful one had to be. People surely would not kill an innocent horse ? But action was taken, as Lomitas got a night watchman to protect his stable box regularly, and the police was informed as well. But the looming threat of poison or drugs , small portions given to him at any given time, affecting the horses health and ability to walk, could not be prevented.Lomitas´ training regime went ahead as usual and was seemingly uninterrupted, and he was prepared for another crack in the Düsseldorf Group 1 the “ Preis der Berliner Bank “, a race he had won easily as a three-year-old. Lomitas appeared calm and tranquil in the paddock, but it was only in hindsight that we were to know why. But his coat failed to sparkle that day, and the golden gleam was missing, and I had an uneasy feeling yet persuading myself he would be ok. The race would prove the opposite.
Lomitas was never travelling. He followed the field and had quite a good position when the horses entered the straight, a case of “ close enough if good enough “. Lomitas was not good enough on the day, in fact he could not be good enough . He trailed in beaten oh so many lengths and something was clearly horribly wrong.
An anonymous letter followed the very next day, basically stating that this was the proof that “we can get to the horse at any time, and the run in Düsseldorf was just "a warning". Worse would follow if the claim would not be met. A post–race examination by the vets showed unusually high blood-counts in the horses liver and kidney, proof that some poisonous substance has indeed been given to the horse. Lomitas life clearly was in danger. The police started an investigation.
October 3, 2011 at 07:51 #372807My opinion for the Aussie was he was just too far back, pulled lengths off the majority of the field and held pace with the winner (who one person in this thread has already labelled the best middle distance horse in the world now
) from the top of the straight. In my opinion it was a very poor ride….I think So You Think is obviously a decent horse but I thought the run showed that he is probably about as good as Snow Fairy, who herself didn’t have the best of draws. As for the winner, maybe she hasnt done enough to be the best middle distnace horse in Europe, but she is definitly progresing pretty rapidly and she routed them. Didnt Aiden have a filly a few years ago who took a long time to actually win a group race and then went on to be pretty much unbeatable?
Regarding one of O’Briens other runners; Treasure Beach. I know you always take a risk with one of theirs that no matter how good the horse may be, they will be sacrificed as a pacemaker but come on. It may be my mind playing tricks but the Ballydoyle pace-makers now seem to be completely ignored by other stables as they set off at what looks to be 6F pace. Once upon a time, other jockeys couldnt afford to let them go but everyone has grown wise. They are a complete waste of time!
I also have a problem with Flash Dance always letting Goldikova have a run up her inside but thats another matter
