What a beautiful round of hurdling this horse put in at Exeter today. Consistent, tidy, fast, fluid and balanced. Looked like the horse was taking pride in not touching a fence. Fantastic technique. Best I’ve seen in ages from a novice. I’ll watch that again a time or two.
Well done Prince, well done David Pipe!
October 23, 2007 at 21:37 #121113Very nice price too, think it was 13/8 and then into 5/4 before the off.
I only heard the commentary but it did sound quite a fluent display from the fav.
October 23, 2007 at 21:39 #121114Apologies for what must seem like I am replying to every thread on the forum lol, but it just so happens that the latest threads I have interest in

Anyway, once again, I couldn’t agree more. I backed the Nichols horse (the name eludes me) so watched the race closely. It was evident from a long way out that Pipe’s horse was not only travelling well, but was jumping fantastically.
Prince was favourite today, and duly won like a strong favourite should, but CR, do you think the horse improved on previous efforts today, or do you think he just beat a mediocre bunch, afterall, most where recruits from P2P’s and had no worthwhile hurdling from.

October 23, 2007 at 22:03 #121117Hi MM
He didn’t beat much today but he beat them well which was all he could do. If he can continue to jump like that he’ll defy those penalties at novice level no problem. The Pipes are renowned for their placing of horses so I’m sure there’s more wins in him.
The Brit Novice Hurdle at the Cheltenham December meeting over 3 miles might be a good target.
Whatever I look forward to seeing him again.
October 24, 2007 at 01:58 #121127I must say, the horse does look like a natural hurdler which will leave it with something in hand when raised.
The way it jumped was reminiscent of a Mark Pitman trained top class hurdler of a few years ago (name escapes me,help!)
Im looking out for that one. Cheers Rampante!

Ots
You’re possibly meaning Monsignor – though i doubt ‘trained’ is the right word in this particular context?
October 24, 2007 at 12:19 #121188Can anyone tell me how Ask Oscar faired in 3rd place, an interesting recruit to a yard I follow. Certainly an improvement over his fall on his previous start..
Any views gladly appreciated.

He ran a very encouraging race. He raced up with the pace and was always in contention, jumping quite well throughout.
Turning for home, the winner was cantering all over him (and the rest of the field), and he was quite easily disposed off. He faded into 4th at one point and looked as though he wouldn’t get a place, but to his credit, he battled back really well all the way up the straight and eventually got back up for 3rd close home.
The eventual 4th, veered right across the track after jumping the last, carrying Ask Oscar with him and therefore neither of them lost lengths to one another and Ask Oscar got up for 3rd by being the better horse on the day.
He should definitely pick up a race or two on that showing. In fact Paul Nicholls was quite hopeful of a good showing for his horse (the eventual 4th) prior to the race, so the fact that Ask Oscar finished ahead of him augers well.

November 16, 2007 at 21:04 #125123The Prince is back in action tomorrow at Cheltenham. Much stiffer task but I’ll be more than happy if he hurdles like he did the last day at Exeter.
COME ON THE PRINCE!
November 17, 2007 at 12:31 #125219Seems to be a big price too, think you can easily get 20s if you look about.
Will be interesting to see how he goes today.
November 17, 2007 at 12:35 #125220He’s 12lb out of the handicap. He does have a 7lb claimer on board though, but he’s not very experienced according to his RP Lifetime stats (he could be champion point-to-point jockey or the next McCoy/Walsh/Thornton for all I know)
November 17, 2007 at 13:48 #125242That’d be Felix de Giles, would it, David? Lots of point-to-point experience, plus an apprenticeship of sorts trying to humour some of John Manners’ yokes (and the trainer himself, come to think of it). I wouldn’t be as concerned about de Giles’ ability to get a tune out of Prince de Bersy as, say, some of the amateurs we saw in action at HQ yesterday.

November 17, 2007 at 14:09 #125246Nice horse terrible race……the others were strung out all over the county a sure fire indication they were a moderate bunch.
However he moves like a good horse and could win a lot more races if the handicapper doesn’t punish him too much.
He’s on a hiding to nothing going to Cheltenham.
It could be he is either a lot better than he seems on the book or they think he will be over an extended trip.
It is more likely though the owner want’s him to run at Cheltenham. If that’s the case and he were mines I would be keeping him in his box.
There are loads of races that they could find for him where he wouldn’t be 12lbs out the handicap. If he runs up one of the top horses backsides and finishes a close 2nd or 3rd he won’t be winning so easily again. The handicapper will murder him.
Hope he wins or finishes stone last and if the trainer thinks it’s a waste of time running him he will.
I’d watch the betting and he is around 5 or 6’s it might be an indication they do think he’s special and he might just be a very safe EW bet.
November 17, 2007 at 21:15 #125347The Prince ran a great race I thought on a bad day for the Pipes in general. He got tired and was just staying on up the hill no more. Given an easier stamina test there is definatley more races in him and really pleasingly he hurdled beautifully again.
