A book of systems which I have had for many years examined the success of newspaper selections.
I have adapted the findings to try out the following system which I haved titled Press Gang
Rules:
1. In the Daily Mirror, pick out any horse selected by both Newsboy and Bouverie.
2. If it is priced 5/2 to 4/1 (inclusive) in the betting forecast, it is a selection.
Yesterday there were 2 qualifiers: Shannon Waters (LOST) and Aahgowangowan which WON 9/4.
Today there are three qualifiers:
Tag Team 3.10 Lingfield
Influential 4.20 Perth
Astromancer 8.55 Yarmouth.
June 30, 2004 at 14:16 #54139Good luck with this one, Steve, but I wouldn’t hold out a lot of hope for two reasons:
1. Newspaper tipsters like Newsboy and Bouverie are very good, but have to give a tip for every race which means giving about 36 selections each today. In the circumstances they do well to only lose around 10 % of their stakes over a long period.
2. Systems based on selections around the 5/2>4/1 area are very difficult to turn a profit with, mainly because such selections are popular and tend to be overbet.
It might be better to take the opposing view and frame a system around horses that are only tipped by one tipster. These horses tend to be decent odds and can prove profitable as Rich N Ford has proved.
July 1, 2004 at 09:32 #54142Thanks Artemis for your good wishes & advice. I am actually following the RNF system, but wanted to complement it with an opposite approach.
I will keep records of profit/loss for July and we’ll see what happens.
I intend to use a syaking plan of 1111122233
Thursday 1st July – 4 selections:
Riyma 2.30 Yarmouth
Zimbali 3.30 Yarmouth
Premier Rouge 4.50 Haydock
Emerald Penang 6.55 Epsom
July 1, 2004 at 21:21 #54143I like Wright Choice ( Times Online ) and Templegate ( Sun online ). Their daily selections are both available on the internet and cost nothing.
July 2, 2004 at 13:54 #54144Results for 1st July L L L Emerald Panang WON 9/2.
Outlay 4 Returns 5.5. (In fact the winner was available at 5.3/1 on Betfair)
Today 2 July 04
Master T 3.00 Southwell
Euwiluwil 5.15 Southwell
Smart John 7.00 Haydock
Master T and Euwiluwil are available at around 6/1 on Betfair.
Thanks for the comments on the idea. The logic behind it is basically that Newsboy tips 25% winners overall, with at present a level stake loss of 9%. By following horses that are also tipped by Bouverie and limiting the
forecast range to 5/2 to 4/1, I reckon we have a decent chance of a profit.
The system produces 3 or 4 selections a day and they usually have lots to recommend them (top rated, distance etc)
With the 2 winners available at 5.3/1 and 3/1 on Betfair, the profit using this betting medium is 3.3 points

July 8, 2004 at 16:37 #54152I have done little research but I’ve been told that when Fallon is riding a horse in the last race of a meeting that the Sunday Mirror nap, it is profitable. Maybe someone who can be bothered will look it up  .
July 8, 2004 at 20:54 #54153Hi Jairducochetfan
I don’t know about the Sunday Mirror, but in the whole of the 2003 Flat season, when Newsboy tipped Fallon’s mounts, they were 37% successful, returning a profit of 19 points.
Incidentally the courses at which Newsboy returned a profit on all selections in 2003 were: Newbury (by far the best), Lingfield, Sandown, Doncaster, Newmarket, Musselburgh, Pontefract, Redcar, Folkestone and Windsor.
Today’s PRESS GANG selection was a non runner (Doncaster abandoned)
