Maybe im not following the news sufficiently but when are we going to see this one again?
We keep hearing that the ground isnt soft enough but if so, that has to mitigate a GC bet
My suspicion is that clearly all is not well but the updates are relentlessly upbeat?
A Cracking horse IMO but one run before GC simply isnt ideal for a still relatively inexperienced runner
January 3, 2019 at 11:30 #1391165It’s a bit like Carefully Selected, Laurina etc. the ground hasn’t quite got soft enough for them to reappear.
Whilst they’ll go on better ground, trainer’s don’t want to start them off on that.
You could be right + there could be something hidden behind it, but i’d say it’s ground related.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!January 3, 2019 at 11:49 #1391168Owner should have sent him to Twister. Would have run 6 times by now.
“Trainer Pat Kelly had warned it was unlikely he would run his stable star in Friday’s Savills Chase at Leopardstown if significant rain didn’t arrive, so it was no surprise the seven-year-old did not feature among the final declarations on ground that was on Thursday officially described as good on the chase course.
Last season, Presenting Percy’s final two outings ahead of the festival came when he won the Galmoy Hurdle and finished second to Our Duke in the Red Mills Chase.
Those two Gowran Park races, the first of which is scheduled to take place on January 24 and the second just over three weeks later on February 16, would form the preferred route back there now, according to the horse’s owner Philip Reynolds”
January 3, 2019 at 12:07 #1391169The Savills chase at Tramore on New year’s day was soft ground. If these trainers really wanted to run horses there are plenty of suitable opportunities
January 3, 2019 at 12:37 #1391171An Irish member on TH has posted that stories are emerging over there that the trainer “has gone off the rails” and the horse is being trained elsewhere.
Obviously I can’t confirm the validity of them, and indeed hope they are not true, but best be aware.

January 3, 2019 at 13:19 #1391179Good point wexford and maybe that rumour has something to it.
Perhaps a low profile trainer ending up with a top horse brings about a virtual nervous breakdown?
January 3, 2019 at 13:21 #1391180Another one of the wrapped in cotton wool horses that frustrate the you know what out of me, yes the vast majority of his form is on soft or heavy but it was good ground when he won the Pertempts Final at the Festival in 2017, so why baulk at running him on supposedley good ground at Leopardstown (note all the race times on the day suggest it was a lot slower than advertised).
Sounds like he will be ground dependant (until Gold Cup time of course when he will run without a word said about the ground being an issue) and to be perfectly frank his Gold Cup price is a joke based on his RSA form where he beat Monalee 7L (which is exactly what Kemboy did just last week and he is 3 or 4 points bigger in the betting and I think he is way too short) and Elegant Escape who went on to outstay his rivals in a Welsh National.
To me that is way below what is needed for a Gold Cup especially from a chaser in his first season out of novice company with very limited experience over fences.
January 3, 2019 at 13:26 #1391182Could well be the ground but it is asking a lot of a novice chaser to go out and win a gold cup with potentially only one prep run over fences.
January 3, 2019 at 13:27 #1391183Well last year’s novice I mean!! I suppose Coneygree did win as an actual novice though.
January 3, 2019 at 13:30 #1391186Some claim that the trainer has gone off the rails! What does that mean exactly haha?

Wrapped in cotton wool in what has been one of the strangest winters weather-wise i remember (27years!dont remember about the first 10 haha)
Plenty of trainers don’t want to start their horses on firmer ground than ideal- so i wouldn’t want to criticise them too much.
His price is too short considering we haven’t seen him but tanking Monalee and ABP (which he would have) is very good form whatever way you look at it. Course form also very strong- this is from someone who couldn’t have a bet in the GC this far out.Considering a few of his rivals haven’t shown great form either!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!January 3, 2019 at 17:05 #1391212Monalee is priced at 20s and bigger for the GC and that tanking was last years form, Kemboy was equally as impressive in beating him this season but he should be around 10s minimum (along with PP) in my opinion. I would personally have Native River as fav (around 4 or 5s) followed a couple of points bigger by Clan Des Obeaux and then Thistlecrack and then PP/Kemboy/Road To Respect.
PP has had plenty of races he could of run in, the King George was run on good to soft (it was that way quite a way before the race as well), the John Durkan run on yeilding (Irish equivalent of good to soft) so are we to believe that good ground is now not safe to race on and that even those conditions of the aforementioned races were too fast for him also?
What happens if we get similar conditions on Trials Day at Cheltenham or for the Denman Chase or the Irish Gold Cup – does that mean we won’t see him until the big day and what (heaven forbid) do they do if we get a dry spring and the ground is good come Gold Cup day…..
They also have the option of running him back over hurdles but I just think connections are thinking too much about it and need to get on with just running him while they still have some options.

The ground is safe i am sure- but many trainers don’t want to run their better horses on it for their first start. Whilst these are big races, they aren’t the end target for these horses and their owners. They want to be primed for the big day + a lot of trainers do it this way- does that make them right? Well, who are we to correct them? After all, Mullins, Elliot + Kelly are pretty good at peaking them for the right day.

At this moment in time, they are taking their chance that the ground will come right for them i suspect to get a run into them. The way its going your potential outcome might actually happen this year, but it’s UK/IRE so surely not?!?! I would say come Leopardstown if nothings changed they will be forced to run them.
