Got to say I think Paddy Power’s latest publicity stunt is in pretty poor taste.
March 4, 2014 at 19:45 #4699815/2 about him getting off with it should be a 100/1 really!
March 4, 2014 at 20:24 #469987There was a comment made on ITV’s Agenda programme about it last night. In the opinion of most of the general public this is bound to confirm stereotypes.
How would Paddy Power feel if it was his mother that was shot dead and someone was offering odds for the verdict?

May be the Paddy Power offer on the bottom right of this page should be removed?
Value Is EverythingMarch 4, 2014 at 22:03 #470008I don’t know their motive, I only wish it was to expose the hypocrites who are dissing PP but will be eagerly discussing chances of guilt or innocence over their cornflakes worldwide for weeks to come. Dipping your hand in your pocket for a novelty bet does not mark you out as much different. This is a media circus on a grand scale which people worldwide will gorge upon for weeks on end. PP is a symptom of it, a small sideshow for hypocrites to point at, to make them feel superior. Genuine faux indignation is what it is. 2p.

It is imo wrong to televise this case.
In my experience Indocine, people who do the wrong thing often call others "hypocrites", so they can justify their actions and feel superior.

March 4, 2014 at 23:29 #470028I’d be interested in reading the views of Mike and AP on this matter. Just as a matter of my own interest

You’d be better off reading what’s on the lines rather than what you think is between them.

Ditto Indocine, Ditto.

OK ditto.

Cheap publicity.
March 5, 2014 at 10:21 #470053I certainly disagree with this PP offer, it’s in line with their historical crassness. I will close my account with them, should have earlier.
I recall Nicky Campbell on BBC5 radio suggesting odds on the outcome of the last Iraq war, ignoring the deaths that were to likely to occur on all sides.
There is a coldness in people these days, a lack of empathy.
March 5, 2014 at 10:26 #470054Presumably there isn’t an international law governing
sub judice
as I would hazard a guess that offering a yay/nay bet on the guilt of say, Rebekah Brooks would infringe UK
sub judice
law
Anyway, PP’s "cheap publicity" seems to have worked as it’s being discussed here, and until I read this thread wasn’t aware of this splendidly sick offer: there’s no such thing as bad advertising
To quote Ian Hislop on Have I Got News For You re: Press Regulation and the seedier methods of the Red Tops "don’t ban it, just don’t buy (bet) it"
March 5, 2014 at 10:36 #470055…. there’s no such thing as bad advertising…
Are you sure about that?
I wonder how many accounts have been closed as a result of this compared to how much money they’ve actually taken on the outcome of the case.
PP are a strange firm. They come up with excellent money back offers and other promotions but their general cheap tackiness puts off a lot of potential customers. They could try to go upmarket but I doubt that their head honchos even know the meaning of the word. I strongly suspect that Messrs Kennedy, Power, McCue et al have the mentality (and intellect) of a pack of teenage schoolboys.
March 5, 2014 at 12:25 #470074Paddy Power must be paying the Racing Post quite handsomely for publicity. The Supreme money back offer and Oscar Pistorius trial market were both deemed good enough for the front page of the paper and online.
By the way, you could get a shade of odds-on for Pistorius being NOT guilty before the first day of the trial. I guess everyone has missed the boat now.
March 5, 2014 at 13:03 #470084I’ve seen plenty in expressing their moral outrage expose themselves as unfit jurors.

By not sharing the same opinion as you I suppose?
