4112- 23 Tatenen (FR) (PFNicholls (in GB)) – . ………11,02This has always been one of my favourite races of the season. I would have a strong fancy for it this year in Trafford Lad if he lines up. The form of the Moriarty is rock solid and Dusty reported afterwards that he’d scoped badly so it’s likely that he wasn’t even at his best that day. He’s already a grade 1 winner over the course and distance so I think he’ll take all the beating here and I’ll be amazed if he doesn’t start favourite.
Rare Bob acually beat Trafford Lad on their chase debut before the result was ammended in the stewards room but he’s finished behind him twice since then. This horse is very well bred being a half brother to Tiutchev and he’d have a chance if he lines up but he does also hold an entry in the National the following day.
Aran Concerto is a horse with a massive reputation but he’s had plenty of problems. He was taken out of a race at Navan on Saturday because of the drying ground but with the way the weather has been I’m not sure if he’ll get a more suitable surface at Fairyhouse. Nicanor is also entered from the same yard but I’ve heard that he won’t run again over fences this season in order to protect his novice status for next year.
Tatenen getting 8lbs is interesting. I was strongly against him in the Arkle and the finishing position of Follow The Plan suggests he wouldn’t have been in the shake up but it is impossible to say for sure. Nicholls raiders in grade 1s in Ireland should always be respected but if he does take up one of his two entries at Liverpool I’d say this race in all likelihood will come too soon.
March 30, 2009 at 20:26 #219266With Noel Meade having kept him back from Cheltenham for this, I would have a sneaking fancy for Nicanor. Hopefully Tatenan will stay in as I reckon he will be an artifically short price which could see some nice prices for the others.
March 30, 2009 at 20:28 #219267Read a quote somewhere from Meade saying he’ll probably run Nicanor because "I don’t want him winning an ordinary beginners’ chase – if he wins a novice chase I want it to be a good one".
But you’d imagine that neither he nor Aran Concerto will run on quickish ground.

April 8, 2009 at 02:06 #220825Looks like a decent race in prospect here. My initial short list would consist of:
Jayo
Northern Alliance
Will Jamie Run.
Anyone else any thoughts on this?
Mike.Would have to add Trafford Lad to the list after a closer look. Have to wait now for final decs.
Mike.April 8, 2009 at 02:27 #220834Yeah – good bit of rain this afternoon and evening
Going would be Yielding at least at this stage
April 8, 2009 at 03:04 #220843I’m not at all comfortable betting in 2m4f races – especially for Novices.
I’d like to have a bet now, in the belief that Aran Concerto won’t run, but the market hasn’t been formed on betfair.
I don’t know anything about matters Irish; if WP Mullins has 4 entries, how many of them are likely to turn up?

9 Shazand (FR) (EJO’Grady) – AndrewJMcNamara…..11,10
10 Trafford Lad (GB) (ESheehy) – TJDoyle ….11,10Ten declared for Sunday. I don’t see anything there to put me off Trafford Lad. Joncol has looked good at Naas on his last two runs but I think the quicker ground might be against him. I’d respect Aran Concerto but it’s going to be a big ask for him to win such a quality race on only his second chase start. Willie runs four and he has been carrying all before him in grade 1s this season but you could pick holes in the form of each of his runners. Ruby rides Golden Silver who won the Irish Arkle beating Forpadydeplasterer but he was very disappointing at Cheltenham and he was well beaten here in the Drinmore. Jayo went off joint favourite for the Irish Arkle but I’ve never been a big fan of his and I think he lacks the size and scope to make a real impact over fences.
Trafford Lad all the way for me then. I just hope he’ll be a backable price.
April 10, 2009 at 17:34 #221210I’m sticking with Trafford Lad here.
Perfect distance for him and nothing in that line up is putting me off at all
April 12, 2009 at 01:52 #221380I’ve taken (or rather someone has taken for me) a decent lump of Ladbrokes’ 12-1 about Jayo tonight. Memories are short and this horse was favourite to win the Bailey’s Arkle at the end of January but now gets a dismissive double-figure quote. Being fresh is no harm this time of year and if he jumps as he can he’s right in this. I respect Trafford Lad but think he’s correctly priced.
April 12, 2009 at 10:06 #221403Actually really like Ballyholland for this @ 100-1. Also like Jayo @ 12s. Should be a decent race.
Quite like Dundrum in the preceding race and Chateau D’Eau in the following race. Not a bad card today.
April 12, 2009 at 14:09 #221417Trafford Lad must be one of the most consistent horses in Ireland so opposing him may not be wise. He has been found out on several occasions and is beatable IMO
Joncol looks a great prospect and I’m taking a gamble with a horse who may be a bit special.
April 12, 2009 at 14:17 #221420Deutschland looks overpriced to me…I was very impressed with how he moved at Leopardstown and in a good time too. To my eye he had tons in hand at Navan and stretched away. He is well up in class here but his price (13ish on exchanges) offers some strong appeal. Win and each way for me.

I’m very much in the position of being willing to follow Aran Concerto blindly until such time as he fails to live up to the expectation of Noel Meade. His one and only chase start represents merely mediocre form, but he won with such ease that I’m prepared to forgive his inexperience in a race of this nature. He has the size and swagger of a top class staying chaser and achieved to such a level over hurdles that I can’t see him not being good enough for this.
Jayo is an interesting contender, certainly on his victory over Made In Taipan at Naas, but his jumping has to hold up in this better company and, despite having backed him at Leopardstown last time, I wouldn’t be keen to invest in him again. Joncol, who I wasn’t particularly keen on anyway, is out, which leaves Trafford Lad as the only other real option. His beating of Forpadydeplasterer certainly reads well, but I think we saw a different horse at Cheltenham and I’m not sure he’s worth his 5/4 price tag.
Aran Concerto for me.
April 12, 2009 at 18:34 #221460Good open race – i’m risking 2 pts e/w on Barker, who is still relatively unexposed, will like the good ground, and seems to be rejuvinated under the Mullins team.
April 12, 2009 at 18:59 #221466The crossbar rattles – might well have won without the mistake in the back. Good race – but i personally can’t see this seasons novices making a huge impact in the championship races next races, with the possible exceptions of Kalahari King and Cooldine.
April 12, 2009 at 19:03 #221467Backed Barker each-way at 16/1 with Bet365 last night. Just logged on there to see how the withdrawal of Joncon had affected my winnings it turns out I forgot to click the each-way box and ended up backing the horse win-only!
