it was a good game but not as good as the score suggests….again portugal showed their lack of depth in their squad, when losing they had no decent striker to bring on postega scored but hardly what you call top striker also nani is a winger, the Germans look good but i have changed my mind from what i 1st thought dont think they will win comp now, have went for Croatia V Holland final with few other insurance bets, think thats it until final betting wise…..

The German central defence is very slow, will be their undoing imo.

Never ever write off the Germans.

For me they are as good as in the final now and anything can happen once there. They are the most professional tournamenters (I know that’s not a word :D ) you will find.

For me nothing changed at all when they lost to Croatia (I thik I said as much), it just meant they played Portugal a round early. Now that they’ve done away with three strikers (with one playing out wide) they look to have stumbled on a good formation that looked very effective last night.

Yes they were ‘battered’ a bit, but going two up against Portugal would always mean you would sit back on what you had and the Germans got pegged back a little – but as soon as Portugal scored, the Germans hit back again.

I say they are as good as in the final because surely they can’t be as bad as they were in the first game against Croatia. Now Gomez is out of the team, and the confidence they will gain from this victory, I fancy them strongly to beat Croatia (or Turkey) in the semi-final.

It did irk me slightly these pundits banging on about "never writing off the Germans", "Germany are Germany, so I’m with them" etc etc. Yawn. The fact that Germany are doing well is little to do with their national attitudes and very much to do with them being a bloody good team. There isn’t a more comfortable side on the ball IMO- at least in this tournament- and last night’s opener was a fabulous demonstration of the quick passing moves they can string together.

It looked like men against boys last night. Portugal were terrible at the back with their goalkeeper at fault for at least one goal (Ballack’s) while the marking was awful for both headed goals. I think Germany’s defence could be their undoing though as they are slow at the back, especially Lahm. Portugal’s full backs couldn’t cross the road last night with cross after cross either failing to clear the first defender or clearing everybody!

I would be concerned about Croatia’s ability to beat Germany again though. They celebrated a bit too much last time which would make you think they were surprised themselves at the result. This doesn’t bode well for a rematch.

I think Holland have showed how comfortable they are on ball by their quick slick counter-attacking football and feel if they get to Final be very hard to beat

Holland have flair, as do Spain.

Germany know how to win, supplemented on occassion with style. Italy are similar in that they can produce sytlish footballers but in recent years are more regarded as difficult to beat by grinding out victories.

IMO while Spain and Holland have been the most exciting teams at the tournament if either of those two were to play Germany or Italy in the final, and I had to put my mortgage on the outcome, it would be one of the latter teams I’d opt for.

Amongst others, I predicted before the start of the tournament that Spain would finally win another major trophy after 40 years or so and while nothing they have done has detracted from that, it’s the resilience the Germans and Italians have shown so far that would have me worried.

Worried enough to possibly lay some of that 18’s off against Villa which I still haven’t done :?

    Batman,

There is no doubt that Holland’s counter-attacking football shown in this tournament is both attractive and highly effective. However, in terms of keeping the ball and moving it around nicely at any pace the Germans have been an absolutely pleasure to watch so far IMO- in fact, very much in the classic Dutch style without quite so much flair.

i suppose it’s a difference of oppion, cause i have forgot how well both the Croats & the Russians have played at times!!!

Even though the relegation market looks wide open this year, I’d have Villa a lot shorter than 18s.
