It is all for the greater good my son. The guide lines handed down 2000 years ago never mentioned a chapel roof in guatamal so i really can not comment.

Oragnised religion is a strange beast .. surley, if you believe in something then it is personal to yourself. To then try an organise a very personal and private belief seems to me to be more than a little bit bizzare.

A friend of mine, who had a hard time in life became a born again Christian. It didn’t make him happy, stop him smoking or make him any closer to God, even though he said ‘wonderful’ a lot. He was a bit like a drowning man, with a serious head wound, clinging onto a raft.

Many people need leadership, guidance, support and direction to assist them in their quest for spiritual peace. In addition they need a feeling of belonging and a feeling of togetherness. That is why ‘organised’ religion has been, and continues to be, so successful.

It is often difficult for those without faith to understand the seemingly inexplicable manner in which people are drawn to a particular religion or set of beliefs or what compels people to blindly follow the teachings or edicts from their spiritual leaders, even when those teachings are often at odds with their own views. <br>

lol@ Ian – I don’t think I would ever claim to understand the motivations of religious followers. Just making the point that if you don’t share their faith it is then difficult to understand what causes people to act in certain ways and, consequently, if we don’t understand something it is difficult to be objectively critical of it.

Grass – I believe in the same God as you and don’t belong to any religious organisation. However, despite my sharing many of the doubts expressed here about the machinations of religious politicking, I think it is important to be cognisant of the important and valuable role many religious organisations play in the day to day lives of the vast majority of us earthlings.

Narcissism and craving leadership seem an incompatible mix to me.

I’ve never wanted to be led.

In my younger days, the idea of leading (if only to avoid being led) held some appeal, but deep down I always knew I didn’t care enough about overall humanity to want to lead it in what I considered a better direction.

Sounds too much like hard work for too long – I’d get bored fast.

And what’s in it for me?

No man is an island, and you can’t make any money and individually prosper in this life without interaction on some level, but keeping the world at arm’s length is definitely the way forward.

Religious belief, political belief, personal lifestyle choice – all intertwined IMO.

    Well Nixer,
Pope Benedict died at 9.34 am yesterday. Just wondered if you have changed any of your views over nearly two decades.
Not actually sure if you have a voice anymore – I haven’t checked the ship’s log.

I heard the current pope saying pray for him a few days ago …. He was 95 , there’s a load more younger people in strife needing those prayers surely , not that it matters , all that wealth in Vatican city could sure help many people …. it doesn’t though

He might have issued a “Register at TRF and vote Chezza!” Papal edict to the Roman Catholic world before going off to meet his maker – most disappointing!
