Ive given this guy so many chances, but im just so sick of his ridiculous waiting tactics. He is by far and away the worst ‘top’ jockey ive ever seen employ these tactics.
Whether its a crappy Class 6 or 7, or a Group race, he sits out the back as though he is on Pegasus.
Give it up mate……please.
Sea The Stars would have sat on Frankel's quarters and picked him off!
January 25, 2016 at 15:15 #1230690And possibly Jamie lynch too
January 25, 2016 at 15:36 #1230693Ha ha……given you a few dodgy tips then?

January 25, 2016 at 15:41 #1230695Quite the opposite actually I usually do the opposite of what he says. Just gives far to much irrelevant information and I agree about Jamie Spencer too, I don’t like his style og riding and wouldn’t be entirely convinced that he tries to win all of the time.
January 25, 2016 at 15:50 #1230699Yes he does seem to talk and talk and say very little of substance.
Aye, Spencer does my nut in.Ive lost count of the amount of times he has just failed to get up when im on him. When i fancy a horse and he is on it, it almost puts me off backing it such is my lack of confidence in him.

Simple answer is if you don’t like the jockey don’t bet on horses he rides then. Surely that’s part of your decision making process. You’e not being forced to have a bet.
January 25, 2016 at 17:45 #1230715Thanks for that insightful solution to my problem!

January 25, 2016 at 18:53 #1230725And Jamie Oliver.
Mike
January 25, 2016 at 18:56 #1230727Id rather Oliver would do more than retire.

Why not profit from his “incompetence” then?
Lay on exchanges or sell on spreads particularly when he’s on a fav may reap rewards?January 27, 2016 at 15:21 #1230911Im not really looking for an answer, just venting my frustration.
Just watched him again there on Franklin D.He got chopped off, (unluckily) but as per, he broke well enough and decided to not sit in behind the leader, but to take it back……..and he blew it again.
I know they all do this depending on the horse/draw/instructions, but he in particular seems expert at producing his horse just too late.
I basically do now avoid him if i can, but if you fancy a horse on form, its hard to not back it due to the jockey….but if i see George Baker on a horse i fancy, i feel good….when i see its Spencer, my heart sinks.

January 27, 2016 at 16:20 #1230918I share your frustration sometimes Pebblesfan, and George Baker is indeed an under-rated jockey.
But it must be remembered the quickest way from A to B is in equal fractions. Many races are run where the 3 to the 2 furlong marker is the fastest run furlong. Lot of the time races are too strongly run and runners are slowing down in the final furlong. Rather than making up ground when the pace is at its strongest (which takes more energy) – a jockey can optimise his/her chance of winning by delaying challenging until the final furlong (where rivals are tired and slowing). Spencer is one of the few jockeys to recognise this. Some of the nagative press he gets is not justified.
Just because a horse is gaining at the line does not mean it neccessarily could’ve done any better by challenging earlier. All depends how the race is run. However, it does leave horses vulnerable to luck in running and certain courses (eg Goodwood’s round course) aren’t good for such tactics. With Jamie, I do believe the course makes a difference. Much prefer prominent runners at Goodwood (particularly 7f to 1m) and would (there) make Spencer a negative unless I thought plenty of pace was in the race.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 27, 2016 at 16:32 #1230919Yes, i appreciate everything you have said, but i am not against the tactics, im against him using them.
I just personally think his timing and judgement of pace, and when to strike, is poor.

February 1, 2016 at 21:56 #1231657Richard Hughes is currently the leading jockey at Goodwood, 52–265 20% since 2011. Isn’t he one of the most renowned hold-up jockeys of the last 20 years?
