Not content with one thread in this section, I’m starting another (no more I promise) Like my other thread, i’m doing this really to help me focus/concentrate, not as a kind of tipping exercise, although if I point something out that helps someone, thats all well and good.
I will post my placepots on here as and when I do them. At some meetings, they just aren’t
worthwhile, if I think it’s too easy and won’t pay much, or perhaps it looks so hard that if I had 6 selections a leg, I still wouldn’t be confident (such as a newmarket card with 4 maidens)If anyone else wants to use this thread to post their placepots, please do.
Of course when they keep coming in and I find I’m getting less back than I should because i’m sharing the pool with people, then I’ll have to stop this thread, haha
When I was 13/14 years old (mid 90’s) I would fill in some placepot slips on a saturday morning and ask my dad to invest my pound or two for me. Our local bookie was an independent, the slips had 6 lines on them (they didn’t go into the official tote pool) and the minimum you could do was 5p a line. If you pick 2 horses out per race, you obviously get 64 lines, but quite often i’d pick out 2 per race, and then just randomly fill out 5 or 6 of these slips with these horses and cross my fingers.
I remember once winning £120 for one 5p line at Chester, and another £100 at Market Rasen, and although I was already hooked on this sport, winning a little money was nice, and I invested in The Racing Channel!Anyway I still placepots, and they can be profitable with the right approach. I have a few rules that I apply most of the time, although on occasion I will bend them if I feel there is sufficent reason too, they are:
1) In a 3/4 runner race, always try to eliminate at least one horse. It’s tempting to put the field in if you think they all have a chance, but only one line can go through, and your throwing so many perms away on the ones that don’t win, it’s often not worth it.
2) Following on from point 1, I don’t like to put in more horses in a leg, than can actually get placed. So no more than 2 in 5,6,7 runners affairs, no more than 3 in races with 3 places etc etc.
3) I think it’s always best to try and avoid including the favourite and second favourites, where they are clearly going to hold those positions in the market, unless it looks nailed on for them to be placed or say you have a 5 runner event and want to protect yourself should it become a 4 runner race. If one of them is a non runner, you, and a lot of others will have all your eggs in one basket and it’s often in these situations, when pools can pay bigger than they perhaps should.
4) 5 runner races. This applies if you have to put your bet on a fair while before the first race, or if the 5 runner event occurs later on the card. Even if you have a short price one that you were going to bank on, I think it’s other worth considering putting 2 in horses in. It’s frustrating when you get a non-runner and end up on the fav in a 4 runner race that you didn’t fancy, it then gets beaten and hardly anything goes through. If you had the original favourite and thats the non runner, you then end up on the same horse as nearly everyone else and so, whilst it’s not something I do everytime, it’s worth considering, particularly if the weather is changeable and the likelihood of more non runners is increased.
5) Scenario – There is a 9 runner novice chase, 1/2 jolly, 3/1 2nd fav and 16’s bar. If I agree with the market that the 2nd fav is clearly that, most likely to finish second, and no more likely to have a mishap than the fav, I will always put in the 2nd fav instead. The majority will be on the favourite, and if the 2nd fav is almost as likely to place bar a fall, it often makes sense to include that one instead, as if the fav doesn’t happen to complete, a lot of lines are knocked out.
If you go through a card and have written down all of the favourites to include, then it’s quite probably not worthwhile doing the placepot that day. It’s easy to end up with a lot of lines, say 288, and in that instance it pays to step back, take another look, see if it can be trimmed at all, if not, just ask yourself if the pool is likely (I know it’s hard to tell) to pay enough to warrant so many lines.
Another thing I think worth considering is investing a little more when you think the market leaders in the first and last races are vunerable. I know a lot of people bank more on them in these races because they don’t want to go out at either stage, never give into temptation to put more horses in the first or last leg just because of that reason, treat them all the same.
The last thing I can think of is that it often pay’s to look more closely at the meetings with a lot of on course "holiday racegoers". Chester for instance I often think pays more than it should.Just for the record, I’ve never read Malcolm Boyles Guide To The Placepot, so I’ve no idea if i’ve said anything remotely similar. Although from the odd time i’ve read his sporting life column, i doubt it, as he seems to be a bit of a "stats man", which I’m certainly not.
February 13, 2011 at 23:10 #340590Right I’m posting this now, but I won’t be putting them on near the off tomorrow, so any non runners etc, I’ll update.
Catterick, Just the sort of card that appeals for the placepot, tricky, but not impossible and with doubts over a few that are likely to be popular.
Leg 1 – 3 Be My Deputy, 16 Streamtown
Leg 2 – 3 My Brother Sylvest, 9 Fujin Dancer, 11, Jacques Vert
Leg 3 – 1 Chamirey, 2 Youknowyourself
Leg 4 – 1 Sam Lord, 7 Chief Bucaneer, 15 Greenbelt
Leg 5 – 4 Double Vodka
Leg 6 – 8 Tricksofthetrade, 12 Tuilan, 15 Lure Of The Night108 x 10p lines = £10.80
Plumpton, not the sort of card for a huge perm, but still interesting, as only 2 places in most races, they’ll be a fair bit of "dead money" I’m sure with people selecting more than 2 in those races, and a few of the market leaders look vulnerable enough.
Leg 1 – 4 Lindsay’s Dream, 9 Mavalenta (
Leg 2 – 1 Fruity O’Rooney, 2 Alderluck
Swiss Guard likely to be a non runner in the next, so treating it as a 4 runner race.
Leg 3 – 1 Super Directa, 3 The Bishops Baby
Leg 4 – 1 Lupanar, 4 Latin America
Leg 5 – 3 Norman The Great, 5 Pascha Bere
Leg 6 – 2 Whitcombe Spirit, 6 Little Roxy64 x 20p lines = £12.80
February 14, 2011 at 20:23 #340672Got us tempted, thx for the introduction.. So near and yet so far though; but way more fun than wasting a tenner on the lottery
February 15, 2011 at 00:41 #340708Well you could say "so near" but I’ll resist, or I’ll end up sounding like my nan when I’d see her after she’d finished playing bingo "oh all I needed was one number"
I’m slightly annoyed I left Beau Lake out of what turned into a 3 runner affair at Plumpton, but anyway moving on…………..
I don’t think Folkestone is likely to pay very much, so I’m going to restrict the number of lines.
Folkestone
Leg 1 – 5 Quam Celerrime, 7 Snow Patrol
Leg 2 – 2 Quartz Du Montceau
Leg 3 – 2 Canni Thinkaar, 3 Upham Atom, 5 Mrs Fawlty
I think Asturienne is beatable, as she can be very one paced, and this small field might not suit, I think in this situation you either have to bank on such a short priced one, or at the most add another. If you put all 4 in and the fav wins, your then doing well to get anything worthwhile out of the pot. So i’m going to chance leaving her out completely.
Leg 4 – 7 O Malleys Oscar, 11 Venetian Lad
Leg 5 – 3 Union Island
Leg 6 – 6 Pepito Collonges, 7 Captain Smoothy24 x 50p lines = £12
I’m going to wait and make sure Newcastle passes the inspection in the morning.
February 15, 2011 at 12:17 #340735Newcastle
Leg 4 is probably the key to this paying a worthwhile amount. Decent Lord won well on Sunday, but it was hard work in the ground, and I think he’s just as likely to flop as he is to win. Kings Chorister isn’t reliable either, so it’s just possible that race could end up knocking a fair amount out, of course I’ll probably go out before then…………
Leg 1 – 1 Bunclody, 3 Lucky Sunny
Leg 2 – 6 Prince Tam, 8 The Green Hat
Leg 3 – 3 Lady Ida, 6 Tanzanite Bay
Leg 4 – 2 Baltic Pathfinder, 4 Jeringa
Leg 5 – 1 Sydney Cove, 3 Devils Delight, 6 Kings Chorister
Leg 6 – 2 Mr Marker, 3 See You There96 x 10p Lines = £9.60
Southwell
Southwell usually pays either a very modest amount or something rather large, it could again go either way today, but it looks worth a small dabble.
Leg 1 – 1 Convince, 3 Dickie Le Davoir, 4 Figare Flyer
Leg 2 – 6 Hermes
Leg 3 – 1 Army Of Stars
Leg 4 – 3 Follow The Flag, 5 Sweet Child Omine
Leg 5 – 4 Calculating
Leg 6 – 2 Rath Maeve, 3 Ridgeway Hawk12 x 50p Lines = £6.00
Well a fairly useless effort today on all fronts
February 16, 2011 at 12:45 #340876Well today can’t go any worse than yesterday. Although If your one out, you may as well be five out! ha!
Leicester
Unlikely to be a huge dividend, but it looks worth a go, as I can see a few of the market leaders finishing out the frame.
Leg 1 – 2 Mylord Collonges, 5 Handtheprizeover
Leg 2 – 3 Lordsbridge, 4 Uncle Ant
Leg 3 – 5 Battlecry
Leg 4 – 4 Quick Fix, 7 Guns of Love
Leg 5 – 1 Battlefield Bob
Leg 6 – 7 One More Dinar, 14 Well Mick, 17 Reelwill24 x 50p Lines = £12
Musselburgh
Again, like Leicester it looks unlikely to pay a massive amount, but it also looks to be worth a try, as it may well pay three figures, and it doesn’t look all that difficult (famous last words). Getting the favourite out of the last leg could prove the key.
Leg 1 – 1 Blenheim Brook
Leg 2 – 4 Soprano, 9 Vallani
Leg 3 – 12 Quechua Des Obeaux
Leg 4 – 2 Capricornus, 6 Antoella
Leg 5 – 7 Dontpaytheferryman, 8 Pokfulham
Leg 6 – 1 Posh Bird, 3 Quinder Spring16 x 50p lines = £8
I can’t see many, if any, of the market leaders finishing out the frame at Lingfield, and am happy to leave that meeting alone.
February 17, 2011 at 12:51 #340994One out at both venues yesterday, although the dividends were poor.
Kelso looks unlikely to pay much and so perms need to be kept to a minimum.
Kelso – Thursday 17th February
Leg 1 – 1 Bogside, 14 Music Of The Moor
Leg 2 – 1 Texas Holdem, 6 Quacity, 8 Melange
Leg 3 – 1 Heez A Steel
Leg 4 – 4 King O’The Gypsies
Leg 5 – 1 Peddlers Cross
Leg 6 – 2 Optimistic Harry, 3 Quotica De Poyans12 x £1 lines = £12
Ffos Las, this looks trickier and potentially a fairly big divident awaits…..
Ffos Las
Leg 1 – 2 Grey Gold, 5 Tullyraine, 11 Invictus
Leg 2 – 3 Arturo Uno, 7 Cold Harbour
Leg 3 – 1 Rith Bob, 2 Gilwen Glory
Leg 4 – 1 Quo Video, 2 Simarian, 3 Kerada

Southwell
Leg 1 – 1 Jack’s Revenge, 3 Ace Master
Leg 2 – 3 General Tufto, 4 Bajan Pride
Leg 3 – 1 Sirdave, 3 Astrodiva
Leg 4 – 3 Camps Bay
Leg 5 – 1 Colorus, 5 Shawkantango
Leg 6 – 1 Steed, 6 Thunderball32 x 30p lines = £9.60
Wolverhampton
Leg 1 – 3 King of Connacht, 4 Lord Deevert
Leg 2 – 2 Bold Bomber, 8 Meydan Style
Leg 3 – 1 My Lord, 2 Better Self
Leg 4 – 9 Sir Nod
Leg 5 – 2 Diamond Charlie, 8 Reginald Claude
Leg 6 – 1 Rich and Reckless, 6 Tagansky32 x 30 lines = £9.60
February 18, 2011 at 00:58 #341112No joy on Thursday, hopefully the first winning line will come on Friday.
Newburys rearranged card looks worth a shot, with a couple of competitive races and a 4-runner heat in the mix.
Newbury
Leg 1 – 4 Sangfroid, 5 Valentine Vic, 12 Go Amwell
Leg 2 – 1 What A Friend, 2 Dance Island (If it were to become a 4 runner event, he could knock out nearly everyone, and is not a no-hoper if you take What A Friend out the equation)
Leg 3 – 2 Tchico Polos, 7 I’msingingtheblues
Leg 4 – 2 Salden Licht, 6 Soldatino, 7 Eradicate
Leg 5 – 1 Minella Stars, 2 Our Island
Leg 6- 1 Aiteenthirtythree, 2 Glenwood Knight144 x 10p lines = £14.40
Sandown looks too easy, but I think you can just about warrant having a go at Fakenham. Lingfield and Wolverhampton don’t make any appeal either.
Fakenham
Leg 1 – 3 Nous Voila, 5 Brigadore
Leg 2 – 4 Promising Anshan
Leg 3 – 7 Brunswick Gold
Leg 4 – 2 Ray Mond, 3 Victorias Groom
Leg 5 – 1 Charming Lad, 7 Balustrade
Leg 6 – 1 Massini Man, 3 Rash Move16 x £1 lines = £16
February 18, 2011 at 22:32 #341227Placepots can be a bit like buses, you don’t get one up for a while, then 2 or 3 at once. I hope that theory rings true, as once again one out at each meeting, although Fakenham wasn’t really worth winning! Sandown surprisingly paid handsomely after the first race shock, I would actually have got through that, although I probably would have been one out too.
Onto Saturday and it’s about time I got a return!

February 20, 2011 at 13:48 #341442So close to a very nice divided at Lingfield yesterday, if only I had bothered to put the hot fav in the 2nd!
Well it’s not going too well so far, but I have doubt one or two nice payouts will be on the way shortly, such is the nature of the placepot.Kempton

February 21, 2011 at 17:53 #341605Well it looked like I might finally get off the mark on this thread, going into the last at Hereford.
However that hardly seems to matter now, after the horrible and I believe fatal last fence fall of Abey M’Boy, which in turn brought down the other selection Star Galaxy.
For half a second I was cursing, but when it became obvious how bad the fall was, it quickly put it into perspective.I’ve just found out via the racing post website, that Abey M’Boy did actually get up in the end, good news!
February 21, 2011 at 20:19 #341627Think Star Player was lost at Carlisle though as the race is void.
February 22, 2011 at 00:34 #341654Yes unfortunately poor old Star Player was put down at Carlisle as indeed was the mare Political Pendant earlier on, very sad.
Well as the Hereford incident proved, one pot can make up for many losing ones, but you do need a bit of luck too, and maybe I’ll get that with Tuedays’ efforts. Taunton in particular should pay well if successful.
Taunton

February 23, 2011 at 01:52 #341796The Wetherby placepot was got on Tuesday for 40p, which returned £64, not a fortune, but at least the monkey is off the back. I will have to put a p/l on this thread in the coming days, so it’s still a case of "must do better"

February 24, 2011 at 01:34 #341977A return so small at Lingfield, it’s embarassing, and one out at Doncaster!
Some shorties about tomorrow, and whilst I’ve taken a few on, if you can’t see them finishing out the frame, there is little point leaving them out. Kempton however looks very difficult and should pay well.

So a better day, but things just didn’t quite pan out as they might have done, maybe Friday will be the day………then again
