Watched Dublin Flyer in the Becher on utube the other week. What a horse!
November 26, 2011 at 13:27 #379738INDEED Eddie , weed out the nasties I say
ps do you remember that Iconic ride Brendan Powell senior gave to Dublin fLYER ….many many moons ago ….well he would have been banned for 3 months nowadays……and people wonder why the game is floundering
Ricky
Ricky,i assume you mean his 95 Mackeson victory over one of Jennys, when he battled like the lion he was to get back up on the line! It took over 5 cracks to do it mind but hey that WAS how racing was back when things were REAL!
November 26, 2011 at 13:38 #379739Ricky,
I’ve heard a whisper cormack is on the case of deep sensation, not before time if you ask me
Being a sensitive sort myself, this Deep Sensation character was very insulting to my ‘Whippin it up’ thread and yet incredibly it was very well viewed from fellow posters, mind you i always seem to attract the argumentative sorts that try to put me down!
Armchair Jockey
, undoubtedly No 1.
Mr Wilson
,No 2 and that fellow who calls himself
reet hard
! In the words of Sean Boyce,i attract them like flys to a ‘Turd’!
November 26, 2011 at 16:39 #379772…..then there’s all the grief you get from me, fisher…..[not going to see Kasabian next week, are you?]
November 26, 2011 at 17:49 #379788Yep King (Tapk )..thats the one , it was a fantastic race , sadly we have no chance of ever seeing that again under the present auspices
I was buzzing for about 10 minutes after that race …
That was proper racing

November 27, 2011 at 23:20 #379969Ah yes, I remember it well. Dublin Flyer front running under Bredan in the knitted green and gold. Egypt Mill Prince’s jockey in white (or was it very light blue?) taking over and looking the winner. Before the old war horse found more to get back up. Though how it can be thought to have anything to do with the whip? Beats me.
People seem to forget it is possible the old rules could alter a finish the other way too. Sometimes one horse finds more under severe whip use than the other and goes clear of its rival. So it’s equally as possible there could be a closer finish under new whip rules.
Therefore, it is impossible to say whether the old rules produced more close finishes, until further down the course (line). And who knows, under the new rules Dublin Flyer and Eqypt Mill Prince may well have been closer still.

You’re missing the point Gingertipster, it’s not about close finishes, it’s irrelevant which set of rules produces more close finishes.
It’s about horses running on merit and producing their best and jockeys being allowed to get this out of them with reasonable measures and it’s about artificial results.
In the 2.55 at Taunton last Thursday if the jockey of No Woman No Cry had kept within the new rules his horse would not have won and race would have been won by a horse with a jockey who should have received a lengthy ban himself (but didn’t) for lack of effort.
Unfortunately these days rides are by and large judged on how many times a jockey uses the whip.Since the new whip rules came in how many times have you seen a jockey flick their whip with a light tap on the horse, now they make every crack count.

You are a pleasure to read Moe,i dont recall ever having a cross word with you.Regarding Kasabian i’m afraid they are just not my thing,i have ‘Punk’ blood running through my veins and any REAL Punk is loyal to the sound, unlike those who strayed into Ska and Two-tone suits!
The Stranglers
have been my fav band for over 30yrs and i support their March tour every year,Rock City,Engine Room and 02 Academy next year.’UK Subs’ were/are still a proper Punk band, along with ‘The Cockney Rejects’ and ‘The Angelic Upstarts’, a hardcore Punk band i liked were ‘Discharge’.From this period of the late 70’s which ‘The Sex Pistols’ ruled came bands that could actually play and a more New Wave sound was created,’The Skids’, ‘Stiff little Fingers’ and ‘The Undertones’ could all play Live, from this magical time of Guitar Rock came ‘Green Day’ and ‘The Cult’ who like ‘The Stray Cats’ bought about a sound you could only get from a Gretsch country Gentleman 6031…Awesome and then to this day ‘The Manic Street Preachers’…Seen em all Moe and still get a buzz from Live/REAL Music!
November 28, 2011 at 15:32 #380038I’m digging out some Manics stuff at the moment. Not your cuppatea, but a band called Blowzabella have reformed and are playing Derby next spring and I’m very excited about this. I used to play their stuff in the car and it drove the kids mad!

Unfortunately these days rides are by and large judged on how many times a jockey uses the whip.Should the rat-a-tat-tat finish of Lester Piggott and Pat Eddery have been banned way back when? Banning that could be said to stop certain horses "running on their merits" and/or "producing their best". What are "reasonable measures"? It’s just a matter of opinion. Should we allow rides like Jamie Spencer on Cape Blanco in America? May be banning that would prevent some from "running on their merits".
The line has to be drawn somewhere, it’s just a matter of where. For sure it hasn’t been drawn where you’d like Eddie, but rules is rules. Rules are the same for every horse. Therefore, every horse should be allowed to run on its merits (do its best) within the rules, whatever they may be at the time. So these rules are fair to all, even though some (fewer than some might think) might be inconvenienced more than others.
Some (not I) might argue horses don’t run on their merits anyway, because there is an artificial aid being used (the whip), which helps some more than others.
No Woman No Cry arguably only won because Powell broke the rules, although the runner up would’ve won anyway with a better ride (within the rules). How did he get away with it? Suspect you agree with me Eddie, that the worst offence was committed by the second’s jockey.
To continue the Bob Marley theme, maybe it is time to…

You talk about "Real Punks" who did not stray towards Ska and Two-Tone. Yet The Stranglers are your favourite Gord! A group that totally sold out. "Golden Brown, texture like" you know what. Two-Tone is more "Real Punk" than harp playing pop in my opinion.

That should be the case Gingertipster, unfortunately when you have no confidence in the rules and absolutely no confidence in the people making the rules it’s difficult.
I suspect when they’ve ****** the game up enough, Roy, Stier and Morris will follow Paul Struthers out the door and we can thank them for their efforts.November 29, 2011 at 11:03 #380146"Gingertipster":zcz91fq0 wrote:

I hate to P*ss on your Golde Brown hair Ginge but The Stranglers were formed in late 1974,the year they wrote their most melodic song ‘Strange little Girl’ which was a Top 10 hit in 1982.They rode the ‘Punk’ scene like Lester rode ‘The Minstrel’ with aggression.Their sound was and still is totally unique but has never waivered from a warbling Keyboard through a mind numbing Bass that has remained REAL through 5 decades, they are musicians at heart and i am priveliged to have grown up relating to their music,i may not Po-go to ‘Stranglehold’ by The Subs anymore but i still have ‘The Meninblack’ blastin through my Black Merc, here’s a modern classic just for you……Its Sooo me!

November 29, 2011 at 15:31 #380178I don’t think Pinza’s thread should divert in to a Punk appreciation thread Gord, so won’t come back.

Dunno about that, after all these are 13 pages devoted to a "cheap holiday in other people’s misery"
