Sadly passed away this morning condolences to his family.
The more I know the less I understand.
June 9, 2025 at 12:34 #1732629The first man to train 1,000 winners on the Flat and over jumps.
Trainer of the greatest ever hurdler (Night Nurse) and possibly the greatest ever dual purpose horse (Sea Pigeon).
RIP.
June 9, 2025 at 12:42 #1732631RIP. Two words…. Night Nurse.
June 9, 2025 at 12:56 #1732632Sea Pigeon is what springs to mind with me taking top prizes under both codes. Can you imagine if he had trained Constitution Hill!
The more I know the less I understand.
June 9, 2025 at 13:08 #1732635Just been looking at his entry in the trainers section of a book from my library – Directory of the Turf 1988.
Which tells me he started training in 1950!
It also lists his owners in 1988 and that reads like a copy of the guest list for any North Yorkshire Hunt Ball.
Great man – and some great horses.
June 9, 2025 at 13:17 #1732636June 9, 2025 at 13:22 #1732637One of the absolute legends of the sport; could train anything if given the ammunition. And his handling of Sea Pigeon shows us that.
I’m a sports fan that loves to see versatility; pro cyclists switching disciplines, racing drivers trying a different series, and trainers/ horses having a crack at both codes – we don’t see enough in horse racing, and more’s the pity.
June 9, 2025 at 14:06 #1732640May he rest in peace, I always enjoyed reading different articles about him.
Here is another good one from 2023 with Alastair Down:
June 9, 2025 at 15:36 #1732649A true legend. Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse in particular are why I fell in love with the sport. Thanks for linking that Alastair Down article, a great and poignant read.
June 9, 2025 at 15:46 #1732650A sad loss.
Like many here, I grew up with Sea Pigeon, Night Nurse, Little Owl and other horses trained by M H Easterby dominating the news.
My most sincere condolences go to his family and friends.
June 9, 2025 at 17:28 #1732658Trained my all time favourite horse in Sea Pigeon (the greatest dual purpose horse of all time) – there wasn’t a horse he couldn’t train, be it a 5F sprinter all the way through to a Gold Cup horse.
Condolences to the whole of the Easterby clan.
June 9, 2025 at 19:47 #1732666June 9, 2025 at 19:47 #1732667A few memories….
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
June 9, 2025 at 22:05 #1732679Record is almost unbeatable for versatility and longevity in training ranks .
Nohalmdun was one of my favorites back in the day .June 9, 2025 at 22:34 #1732684The golden age of the Easterby stable had passed by the time I developed an interest in racing, but it did not take long to glean that the trainer and his equine stars were titans of the sport. What some of them achieved seems unbelievable nowadays, truly the stuff of legend.
I am glad he reached such a great age. A life very well lived.
RIP Peter Easterby
June 10, 2025 at 00:00 #1732687Is there a trainer with more runners than Tim Easterby?
Richard Fahey isn’t, nor is Richard Hannon, Willie Mullins is far too away even if taking his GB runners into account?June 10, 2025 at 19:13 #1732712I was watching a short piece where Dave Ord of The Sporting Life visited Peter Easterby, fairly recently I think. Anyway, the bit that caught my attention was the fact that Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon ran 167 times between them.
I thought that was mind-blowing.167 times.
