“It got very monotonous – we seemed to be at Wolverhampton three nights a week"
PMSL .. imagine how we feel?
July 18, 2009 at 01:17 #239963Look folks , I used to be an ardent anti Spencer fan , but in truth I think he tries a whole lot harder now to get things right
Last sat at Ascot , he gave an absolute exhibition of his skills and he made the impossible look easy twice , indeed so much excitement generated in the crowd for his remaining ride which he got beat , but the buzz in the stands all roaring him home was a treat
Funny thing about that was the vast majority of the attendees were young folks having a great day out and drinking the lager supplies dry ,, so it was good to see Jamie serving up some excitement
Lets give the guy a chance , If i can mellow then surely ……
cheers
Ricky

I’m very forgiving when it comes to jockye and Spencer is no exception. His style of riding like Carberry over the jumps looks brilliant when he wins but damn awful when he loses.
These guys have great hands and can make you think a horse is going better than he actually is and in many cases wouldn’t have finished any closer had Lester himself been riding them.
That’s my opinion for what it’s worth as knocking jockeys is for the birds. No matter who you are if your knocking a top jock like Jamie Spencer your in the wrong job…you should be training and people like Micheal Bell should be doing your job
July 18, 2009 at 10:55 #239985I’ve participated on a few of these "Spencer is crap" threads and we’re just going round in circles.
Quoting Spencer;
"I have a reputation as a risk-taker but I don’t agree with it. Horses are like oranges – there’s only so much juice you can squeeze out of them. There always comes a day when they have had enough but I ride to protect them, to try and make them last."
That is the reason why he will continue to get on horses for the best trainers.
There is nobody out there in the UK who builds up a good horse’s confidence like he does. He keeps them sweet by not subjecting them to hard races when they can’t win and you will rarely see him use the whip much when they do win thus ensuring that there’s plenty left in the tank for another day.By his own admittance, he has ridden some poor races in the past particularly when his confidence has been low but if I had a top class horse I would try to get him on it, if possible.
I can’t believe that Glen is comparing Jamie unfavourably with Richard Hills
Fallon, Murtagh, Kinane, Dettori then maybe but Richard Hills? If there’s one jockey out there who has a job that his talents do not merit Richard Hills gets my vote. His strike rate kept is artificially high by the fact that he rides comparitively few horses outside of his retainer.
July 18, 2009 at 15:35 #240008I’m not sure what his "natural weight" is but I am always left with the impression he has wasted to reach his riding weight and does not have the strength to ride a proper finish.
I’ve never considered him weak in a finish and would have him as one of the strongest when required.

How can you or anyone else justify a statement like that?

Because unlike you Stilvi he knows what he’s talking about
July 18, 2009 at 21:00 #240043Since about 5.21 I reckon he’s the best in the world
(see Lays and Plays).July 18, 2009 at 21:07 #240044I’m not his biggest fan, but he did give Barshiba a very good front running ride today.

Is that the best you can do? You have no answer to the point I made so you just come up with a cheap insult. Not typical of you at all is it?

I personally couldn’t give a toss about horses being saved for another day – I want maximum effort when I back them. Would this be Jamies way of warning off punters and so ensuring he doesn’t feel their wrath after ‘saving’ one for another day?(clearly, not that he gives a flying ****)

Here’s a tip: it’s sometimes better not to post anything and be thought a fool than to hit the submit button and remove all doubt.
Now wash your mouth out!

I trust you’re not serious or are we at cross purposes?
August 28, 2010 at 19:09 #16079Plenty of awful rides this afternoon but Spencer managed to trump the lot of them on Traffic Guard. Why on earth did he need to give the leaders eight lengths start in a slowly run race?

Gave the horse a ride that it likes, don’t see what went wrong?
August 29, 2010 at 10:06 #315034You could start with losing on a well-backed favourite that should have won with a degree of comfort. As for the horse getting the ride ‘he likes’ – difficult to tell I would suggest – the horse had a harder race than necessary and lost to boot. Spencer rides so many horses from behind clearly it is what suits/amuses him and certainly not in all cases the horse.
Typically, I don’t expect to read anything in the press because it just doesn’t happen. Yesterday, Richard Hills (why wasn’t Ted Durcan riding?) allowed the winner first run on Dafeef yet it is so much easier to blame the horse and yes, Gold Rules pulled hard at Beverley but effectively from a good draw Guillambert steered him into a position from which he had absolutely no chance of ever playing a part in the race.
August 29, 2010 at 11:27 #315049When Margot Did got trapped at the back of the other horses recently, I reflected that if Jamie Spencer had been up and not Hayley Turner, there would have been pages of vitriol about the ride. I wish the Spencer-haters could just give it a rest. There are a few jockeys I can’t stand but I don’t feel the need to go on and on about them…
