After the Eclipse Jim McGrath, on CH4, said that somebody had criticised Paul Hanagan in their Saturday column the day after his Oaks win on Taghrooda.
Does anybody know who that was?
July 10, 2014 at 09:09 #485118No but I know James Willoughby doesn’t rate him very highly, why wasn’t Jim McGrath brave enough to say it before the Eclipse and who it was?
He said it was poor timing to say "One swallow doesn’t make a summer" the day after he had won the Oaks but that seems the ideal time to me if you hold that view.
July 10, 2014 at 11:27 #485131Is this why people were seemingly falling over themselves to praise the ride on Mukhadram? An extremely straightforward ride where he basically reaped the benefit of several inept rides in behind. It sums up the media that I haven’t heard anyone even remotely criticise his ride on the same horse at Royal Ascot.
As for Taghrooda surely virtually anyone in the weighing room could have steered that home?
Hanagan has had a very average couple of years as the Sheikh’s retained jockey. He has been lucky enough to find himself employed by an owner who previously gave Richard Hills a ‘job for life’. He certainly hasn’t become a brilliant jockey in the last couple of weeks and his level of ability best reflects how much substance should be attached to the Jockey’s Championship.

July 10, 2014 at 16:13 #485160Was it Steve Caution as he likes to give jockeys stick or is that just his mate Frank

Not guilty, I was on Taghrooda at 33/1 ante-post and Paul Hanagan will get a pint from me if he pops into my local, even if he was on the best horse by a fair margin on the day.
I thought Spencer gave Horsted Keynes a poor ride at Royal Ascot and why should I feel I am not allowed to express that opinion?
In my mind jockeys get too many plaudits for rides where there was so much in hand over the field that Eric Pickles could have won on the horse with Johnnie Vegas on his shoulders with two sacks of coal.
I am not sure of the reasons why but Jim Crowley will be on Horsted Keynes in the Bunbury Cup if he runs. I would be a bit worried if he will line up because he was pulled out before when it turned soft and at 6/1 I won’t be a player, even without the Frankinator on board.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Was that anything to do with the quality of horses available to ride by any chance?
Hanagan keeps it simple – always happy to have him on side unlike certain others like Spencer and Buick.
I really think the snobbery from certain journos and posters on here is down to north/south bias.July 11, 2014 at 13:03 #485213I really think the snobbery from certain journos and posters on here is down to

Oh my god. Do people REALLY think that?

Value Is EverythingJuly 11, 2014 at 18:20 #485245Too much being made of jockey ship IMHO. The likes of murtagh, kinane etc very rarely rode a poor race in group ones but watching the eclipse shows that all the modern jockeys seem overrated to me, Moore is good but not in the same league as eddery ,pig gott and Cauthen. Of the up and coming ones Colin Hayes is riding superbly in Ireland and could be the next Irish jockey to land a plum job in England.
July 11, 2014 at 21:39 #485258Sheikh Hamdan’s stock hasn’t been great for the past few years, hence how Taghrooda was his first G1 winner for 4 1/2 years however they are definitely on the up. It helps having the right trainers training the right horses; Weld, Gosden, Haggas.

More evidence being their Superlative Stakes winner.
July 13, 2014 at 22:09 #485513Am amazed it’s taken so long for the big owners to give the Hannon’s horses. I hope they go on and win classic for one of the Sheikhs

That may have something to do with Richard Hannon Senior’s comments surrounding ‘Arabs’ a few years back – someone on here may be able to verify with a quote.
