The Paddy Power Chase entries are out today and I’m disappointed to see Arthur Moore’s Talbot Road doesn’t have an entry. He has no entries at all at the moment so I presume he’s on the easy list. However, there’s good news too because there’s a horse at 20/1 who jumps off the page as being the type to be subject to a huge gamble.
Last year I was part of the plunge on Cause Of Causes who was beaten by a head by Rockaboya. He’s entered again but is 12 lbs higher in the weights now and looks to face a stiff task. In the same ownership is a horse who went off 4/1 fav for the Thyestes the last time he ran over fences. He was backed from 10/1 down on the day but fell early on, plenty of burnt fingers I’d say. He has had two hurdles runs since and is entered in a hurdle at Clonmel this week too. That should put THE WESTENER BOY spot on for Leopardstown.
The Westener Boy is quite a lightly raced individual, with only 10 runs under rules. The first of these was a 20 length beating of Irish Thistle in a Fairyhouse bumper. Irish Thistle is now a Grade 2 placed chaser, rated 142 (The Westener Boy is rated 130 over fences).
Beaten in a maiden hurdle at odds of 4/9, The Westener Boy then had a couple of ‘held up, stayed on’ sort of runs over fences, before beating Grade 1 winning hurdler Marasonnien by 25 lengths over three miles at Navan.
He then went to Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting for the Grade 1 novice chase over three miles but was pulled up after a bad mistake at the fourth last cost him any chance. Then came the Thyestes plunge and since then I’m sure they’ve been waiting to aim him at a big handicap, protecting his mark by staying over hurdles.
There is plenty of evidence that suggests The Westener Boy is a graded quality animal at the very least. His trainer Colm Murphy is no stranger to handicap success either, Glam Gerry and Shariyan are two examples of victories and gambles landed at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting by horses who were effectively chucked in at the weights. He got Champion Hurdle winner Brave Inca into a handicap hurdle off a mark of 95.
My guess is that The Westener Boy is far superior to his mark of 130. He’s in off 10-02 at the moment and with McManus having a number of horses near the top of the weights, I can’t see him carrying any more than 10-07.
My advice is to back The Westener Boy now at 20/1.
December 3, 2014 at 17:24 #497280Before i saw thread was going to ask you your thoughts on it.
One trend i look at horses beaten in Troytown run well here.
CROSS APPEAL 14/1 i had 3 years ago.Horse has that profile is
GROODY HILL 14/1December 3, 2014 at 18:52 #497299Groody Hill is not a bad shout Darren, he actually ran in the race Cross Appeal won, as a five year old off a mark of 132. He ran a fine race in third and is now rated 130.
The Westener Boy cut from 20/1 into 14/1 today with Paddy Power, maybe they read my rot on here
December 6, 2014 at 22:17 #497739Is there anywhere to check the entries? I’ve a feeling a very inexperienced chaser might be heading here but can’t be sure it’s the plan just a bit of an inkling.
He’s got the same owner as Cause of causes too and i think he’s their one this year
December 6, 2014 at 22:53 #497743Found the entries and he’s nowhere to be seen. Hasn’t even got a mark yet so something later in the season could be on the cards. For the record he runs tomorrow and he’s called King Leon. His Hurdles form from his last 2 runs is starting to work out a bit better than it might’ve looked at the time.
The 1st and 2nd from his last race that he gave 7lb and 14lb to respectively and disposed of quite comfortably have won since(albeit probably not the strongest race in the world).
The previous races 2nd and 3rd horses were Keppols queen and Most peculiar.Keppols Queen has since run well finishing 3rd behind Killer crow and 2nd behind Shaneshill before destroying the field in a Mares hurdle last week against a well fancied/punted Mc Manus horse.
Most peculiar gave him 8lb that day so shouldn’t get too carried away with KL but Most Peculiar went on to win 2 decent Hurdles at Galway.
Aidan O’ Briens said in interviews recently he thinks he’s a few nice Natonal hunt horses this season and i suspect this could be 1. He’s only rated 119 over hurdles at the minute and i suspect that underrates him. He’s been running over an inadequate trip over fences so far 2mile and 2m2f whereas both hurdle wins were 2m4f and 3 mile.
He runs tomorrow in a decent beginners chase against Un atout and Mala beach over 2 mile 6 and he should run better than he has been doing over the shorter trips, but he shouldn’t trouble them i was presuming the plan was to get a mark in the low to mid 120’s and sneak in here, didn’t rockyaboya win off that kind of mark last year?
Looks like i was totally wrong anyway and will have to try find out where might be the long term target now.
December 16, 2014 at 22:34 #498728I’ve backed Foxrock, horse WILL win a decent race this season – just hope it’s this one!
December 18, 2014 at 14:36 #498818The Westener Boy not sure to run, had a setback a couple of weeks back.
December 19, 2014 at 12:15 #498899I’ve settled on two at 33’s, both each way. Vic’s Canvas is one I’ve been tracking, and also The Job Is Right.
I’ll no doubt add a JP horse on the day.
December 27, 2014 at 13:26 #499659Well, The Westener Boy runs despite his recent setback. I’ve added My Murphy at 18/1, backed him in the Troytown and this sort of test should suit him.
December 27, 2014 at 15:28 #499677Lucky I know my jockeys riding style as the commentator was calling the wrong horses name the whole way around lol
O’regan has been brilliant today two winners and this ride was just pure class.

December 27, 2014 at 16:16 #499679Scahill had a nightmare and O’Hehir wasn’t much better on RTÉ, missing a couple of fallers. One of them was The Westerner Boy, who was well backed before the off despite Col Murphy stating he’d come on for the run. I couldn’t have been happier with how he was going before he fell, but his jumping was a concern so can’t have any complaints. Hope horse and rider are well.
