I took my first look at the Sportingpost website in South Africa, and loved the way they publish the winning times in the results.

    (Time: 90.26s (62.25s avg/1000m, or 58km/h)

90.26s is the winning time for a race over 1450m.

To get the average time for 1000m (used as a benchmark, and useful as easy comparison for different distances), you divide 90.26 by 1450 and multiply by 1000, that gives 62.25s average for 1000m.

The km/h is a bit gimmicky, and belongs in the ‘fun-to-know’ category.
Divide 62.25s (the time to cover 1000m = 1km) into one hour (3600s) – that gives 57.8, which rounded becomes 58 – that is km/hour.

    **************************************

From the example above we know that 62.25s is 57.8 km/hour, why not take it a step further and calculate the winning time also, 3600/90.26 = 39.9, then add to 57.8 = 97.7 (this is the pace figure for the race).

    Food for thought…

    Mike.

Not sure about that last bit !

What is the 39.9 ?…….it’s not kilometres per hour, looks like it’s 1.450 kilometres per hour, ie it’s 39.9 times 1.450 kilometres per hour

I’m not sure how adding that to a figure for ‘kilometres per hour’ makes much sense, unless I’m totally misunderstanding what you wrote.

BTW…..I’ve neglected AW speed figures for over a year now but I’m thinking of starting up again for the winter. Trying to think of something different or a different angle…..
