Being a National fan since age very small ( Red Alligator was my earliest viewing memory ), I have often tried to compare winners with other winners. There was only one Rummy, and I don’t think anyone would argue his position at number one, but who comes next? I would love to know your opinions. Personally, my top three winning performances are Hedgehunter, Grittar and Freebooter. Worst winner, by some distance, Rubstic.

My favourite horses - Red Rum, Spanish Steps, Proud Tarquin, Esban, Go-Pontinental, Barona, Charles Dickens, The Dikler, Astbury, Black Secret, Vulgan Town, Huperade, Well To Do, Crisp, Quintus, Argent, Colebridge, Pearl Of Montreal, Nereo, Sonny Somers, Tubs VI, Tartan Ace, Red Candle, L'Escargot, Bula, Beau Bob, Rouge Autumn, Rough Silk, Frodo, Deblin's Green, Prince Tino, Eyecatcher, The Pilgarlic, Captain Christy, Mr Midland, Interview II, Credit Call, My Virginian, Flush Of Diamonds, Scout, Money Ma

Manifesto will probably receive a mention, but I can’t tell you anything about him. 1890s?

Manifesto ran 8 times, falling once and finishing 1st twice, 3rd three times and 4th twice, sometimes with ridiculous weights by today’s standards. I discount him because fields were often very small and competition in those days minimal. However, his record does, as you say, deserve a mention.

I’ve got to say Lord Gyleene in 97 just with the whole bomb scare and then in the end just a terrific winner.

Nothing will ever come close to the great Red Rum,I tingle with excitement every time I think of his performances up at Aintree.
    The best of the rest?
So difficult to call though I’ll go for Red Marauder.
    Why?
Because I’d backed him quite nicely at 50’s and 33’s.
Don’t ask me why,the ground that day was diabolical, though I think it was something to do with having backed him the previous year.
I was convinced there was a big race in him.
    And for once.
    Just the once.
    I was right.

Jay Trump, for sure. After languishing in the lowest claiming ranks on the flat, he was bought for cheap and trained to be a jumper.
In 1962 he won the Radnor Hunt Cup.
In 1963 he won the Maryland Hunt Cup, the most prestigious and testing timber race in America, and was 2nd in the Maryland Grand National to his longtime rival Mountain Dew. Mountain Dew finished 2rd in all 3 of Jay Trump’s MHCs, in addition to winning the MHC in ’62,’65, and ’67.
In 1964 he won the hunt "Triple Crown" (My Lady’s Manor, Maryland Grand National, Maryland Hunt Cup) in the spring, and then shipped to England, where he won the Autumn Trial Chase and was 2nd in the King George.
In 1965 he won the Harwell Handicap Chase and was 3rd in the Grand Steeplechase de Paris in addition to his Grand National win.
In 1966 he triumphantly returned home with two more wins, including his 3rd Maryland Hunt Cup.
All together Jay Trump won 12 times and was second 4 times in his 16 starts over fences. An amazing animal.

    Brian Fletcher

Gold Cup dual winner L’escargot along with Golden Miller must be 2 of the best horses to win the race but mt personal favourites were Rhyme ‘n’ Reason and Gay Trip.

Poor old John Leadbetter: Rubstic was far from being worst horse to win the national he was a cracking horse,I used to visit him at John’s yard (enough said about that) Had he been with a top yard like Thomson Jones who’s Zongalero finished second that year, he would have won a lot more races……….Foinavon holds the honour of being the biggest fluke since I started watching the race.

I can’t think of any bad horses apart from him.In fact if you took any other winner since 1960 and run the horse in this years race he’d have to be in the first 3, if puting up the same performance when winning.

Lot of good horse have run in the national but just couldn’t last out the way these winners did.

The reason I picked Rubstic was twofold, the quality of the field in 78 was very poor, and, despite good going and only carrying 10 stone his time was slower than even Foinavon. Only 7 finished, and two of them were tailed off.

Of course, all the time freaks will put forward Mr Frisk, who smashed Red Rum’s record on fast(ish) ground when ridden by Marcus Armatyge in 1990. He then went on to win the Whitbread the same season, if you recall.

Rubstic was upsides a reigning Gold Cup winner when that horse fell, so the field he was in wasn’t that bad.

I was there the day Mr frisk won the National "Himself",i had backed him at 20"s,it was a remarkable performance from both horse and jockey, although i distinctly recall something looking very dangerous about a mile out before falling!

    Royal Athlete

would be my choice though for personal reasons! :)
