There was a monster gamble landed in the opening race at Fairyhouse on Saturday after the newcomer, Great Attitude, was backed from 200-1 into 8-1 and scored comfortably in the hands of 5lb claimer Tiernan Power Roche
February 22, 2025 at 15:30 #1721137Don’t expect anyone in the Irish racing media to ask any questions.
February 22, 2025 at 15:34 #1721139If the horse is a new comer the bookies priced it up wrong
probably didn’t take a lot of money to get the right priceBlackbeard to conquer the World
February 22, 2025 at 16:11 #1721149The jockey won a 2nd race today with a horse that had 000F as previous form, but it ran well when it fell last time out. Seems to be quite a reliable conditional when the money is down.
Though the number of horses winning or coming in from 150/1 or 200/1 has become quite inflated over the past 5-6 years. Maybe the Irish Bookies have a problem when it comes to getting the price right.
February 22, 2025 at 16:40 #1721153Spot on Nathan.
When it’s the horse’s debut there is no “form” for connections to manipulate.
With a very small yard it is easier for connections to keep the horse’s ability secret… Which is entirely up to them. No rules broken that I know of.Bookies pretty much only had the trainer’s record to go on… I believe Thomas Cleary has had only 23 runners in 4 years, with zero victories and zero placed. Presumably nobody was expecting a performance like that, especially at a big Saturday meeting.
Not that it is really the “bookies” who price up in this sort of race / situation anyway. Suspect they take their market from betfair market; just adding a little mark up. Many years ago bookies would not have offered anything like 200/1. Because they were scared of getting caught with a big payout. The reason why more winners are big prices these days is the bookies just offer slightly less than the exchanges and lay the bets off on the machine. No risk anymore. So I doubt “bookies” actually “lost” anything on today’s race… And as has been said, Maiden hurdles don’t have much money wagered on the whole race. So a gamble in a Maiden will be a bigger percentage of the book and therefore be seen. ie A Maiden gamble doesn’t need to be much money at all for the price to nosedive.
Well done connections.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 22, 2025 at 17:01 #1721157Ginger is spot on. If the horse is having it’s first run you can hardly claim the connections are hiding anything.
i do wonder how much money it takes to shift a horse from 200/1 to 8/1 in a race like this. A few bets of any size and the price would drop like a stone.
February 22, 2025 at 17:47 #1721160Top price used to be 33/1 in Ireland. They wouldn’t offer big prices of up to 200/1 unless they could get better on Betfair, which Paddy Power happen to own.
February 22, 2025 at 20:02 #1721188“When asked whether he knew that he had been 200-1, Cleary (the trainer) replied: ‘Was he 200-1? Jeez, I missed that!'”
Of course you did.
February 22, 2025 at 21:40 #1721194I think some of you got fooled here without realizing who was behind the gamble.
Back in 2010 Douglas Taylor who owned today’s horse until Jan 30th 2025 (I still think he owns part of it at least) landed this gamble at Kilbeggan:
Quite sure that also a very substantial touch was landed again today. It was matched at BF from 800.0 down to 12.5 for a bit of money. For instance at 200.0 for £184.79 which is roughly £37k. The money lost on BF could be somewhere around £200k. Interested to see if any numbers are published in the next few days.
February 23, 2025 at 00:07 #1721200Listen to “Yeats”.
I’ve not posted on here for a while because homage was being given to a deceased bookie.
They get a sting every now and then but always win unless they’re gambling rather than hedging (uneconomically) themselves !!!
The fancy prices talk is all propaganda. How much did any individual bookie really lay at 200/1. And with betfair etc how much did they “stick”/ really lay ?
February 23, 2025 at 16:05 #1721225So 200/1 was available 39 minutes before the race then all of a sudden a handful of punters independently decided the horse had a good chance and on top of that the trainer had no idea.
Pull the other one, it’s got bells on.
I mean, good luck to them but don’t pretend nobody had any idea.
March 15, 2025 at 13:15 #1724123Hunskelper has been backed from 66/1 to 4/1 in the bumper at Thurles today. Will the coup pay off?
March 15, 2025 at 16:56 #1724158Hunskelper’s dam has bred 3 bumper winners so some encouragement there.
Only loose change on Betfair from prices from 80 down to about 17 and you have to half the figures as they reflect both sides of the trade. Traded down to around 3.8 but now back to 12.5.
March 15, 2025 at 17:30 #1724161Looked very green, on and off the bridle, but Hunskelper did keep on up the straight in what was probably a decent bumper.
